Power Rangers/Super Sentai Character Conversion: Turbo / Carranger

Power Rangers Turbo (1997) / Gekisou (Car Racing) Sentai Car Ranger (1996)

There was a second motion picture called Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. They gained the most unpopular Ranger ever, Justin, a 11-year old. After the movie, the regular Power Rangers graduated and switched to younger teens mid-way through the season. Carranger were employees are a car-repair garage given powers by an alien, it was parody/homage to Sentai hence the extra-goofy monsters.

Tommy / Kyousuke (Red Racer) / T.J.
Kyousuke was stubborn and sometimes selfish, obliged to be butt of jokes. Tommy was just a standard leader and T.J. took the torch, he was humble and friendly. T.J. was the first African-American leader, to be followed by Jack (2005) on S.P.D..

Katherine/Yoko (Pink Racer)/Cassie
Yoko loved eating many kinds of foods and once struggled with loosing weight. When she couldn't, she blamed a monster that was not responsible. Katherine, on the meanwhile did worry about weight, but was effected by a monster, becoming light as a feather. She was the same sweet and caring Ranger. Cassie was gutsy and somewhat rebellious.

Adam/Minoru (Green Racer)/Carlos
Minoru was a goofy businessman, in charge of the accounts at the garage. He once accidentally mailed a deadly weapon to a grandmother. He was nothing like his American counterparts. Adam was the great fighter he always was, but a bit more adventurous and confident than before. Carlos on the other hand, was a bit self-centered until Adam had him turn around, but still remained a bit ignorant.

Tanya/Natsumi (Yellow Racer)/Ashley
Natsumi was the chief car repairer, she could fix anything with her lucky wrench she got from an auto mechanic she admired as a child. She could always fix anything since she was young and was made fun for being a tomboy. Tanya was a bit tough but always caring. Ashley was a former cheerleader, but not as annoying, cheery but realistic... well as much as you can be on PR.

Justin/Naoki (Blue Racer)
Naoki was the designer, mostly kept to himself, didn't want to be involved in schnanagans. He was awfully shy, especially when it came to women, he would freak at their touch. Justin, the most hated Ranger ever (think Anakin in Phantom Menace), was just a kid, precocious and curious, he also had a strong sense of what was right.

UPDATED 05/13/09
I realized I didn't do the allies.

Lerigot / Dappu
Lerigot first appeared in the movie and no one like him but not as much as they hated Justin. One movie critic said his voice sounds like a pigeon. He had a wife and son. Many wondered where he came from, well, his inspiration came from Dappu, the alien from Carranger who made the Carranger with his 'car-magic.' Dappu first wore a brown robe but then a basketball jersey and sunglasses, after being made naked by a monster who took people's clothes. Dappu was the only 'mentor,' while Lerigot wasn't the main mentor, the main mentor was Dimitria, who was an original creation.

Blue Senturion / Signalman
Blue Senturion was a space cop, a robot who was then controled by evil for a ep or two, same happened to Signalman who was the planet Police. Signalman was the one with a family, maybe it is what inspired Lerigot's family. Signalman became home sick and went back home for a while. He had a command post on Earth, while I suppose the Blue Senturion stayed in the Power Chamber. He came from the future with a message that all the baddies would team up. He was last seen fighting evil forces in the season finale (Countdown to Destruction) of Power Rangers in Space.

Phantom Ranger / VRV Master
The Phatom Ranger was a mysterious Ranger that could become invisible. VRV Master wasn't a Ranger at all, he was an ally. Both brought in the new zords. He was mysterious too. But it was later revealed he was Dappu's father but we never saw him without his helmet. Dappu once had a dream where he saw his parents and they looked like him, but VRV Master is clearly taller and skinner than Dappu. Oh well. The Phantom Ranger's true identity was never seen or revealed. It was rumored that he was Zordon's son Shadow and that his identity would have been revealed in a third part to Countdown to Destruction, but because of budgetry reasons, it never occurred. It could be plausible that Phantom Ranger was Zordon's son as he came from Eltar, his home planet.

Power Rangers/Super Sentai Character Conversion: Zeo/Ohranger

Power Rangers Zeo (1996) / Choriki Sentai Ohranger (Super Power Task Force Overtech Hardware Rangers) [1995]

Ohranger was about government officers who used technology driven by ancient power that fought an alien army of machines. Zeo was basically the teenagers we knew from MMPR fighting against the same army of machines.

Katherine Hillard (Zeo Ranger I Pink) / Momo (OhPink)
Katherine joined the team in season 3 of MMPR, replacing Kimberly. Kat was from Australia and was put under a spell by Rita in order to take Kimberly's power coin and the Falconzord. She spied on the Rangers as a cat name PC at the humane society where Aisha volunteered at. She even became a monster [In Kakuranger, it was a fox] the Rangers had to fight. When Kimberly's life was in danger, she snapped out of it. Once becoming a Ranger, she and Tommy raided Zedd's palace, she was almost made evil again--she was also afraid of being rejected by the Zeo crystal by her evil past. She eventually started dating Tommy, after being properly dumped by Kim through a letter. Kat was much warmer than Kim, sweet and caring. Momo was bubbly and not afraid of being in a swimsuit.

Tanya (Zeo Ranger II Yellow) / Juri (Oh Yellow)
Tanya was added just at the cusp of the rangers transferring to Zeo. Juri was not afraid of spying and pretending she allied to the enemy. Juri was much more stern and responsible than Momo. Tanya would never betray her friends and she was a bit gullible but knew her responsibilities. When she was offered to become a singer, she knew being a Ranger was more important. Zordon let her use her powers once to save her long-lost parents which she was tipped off were on an island.

Rocky (Zeo Ranger II Blue) / Yuuji (OhBlue)
Yuuji was young and a bit more sensible than his teammates. Rocky became more of a joker, after having almost no personality when he replaced Jason in Season 2 of MMPR. It was also revealed Rocky was of Mexican hertiage.

Adam (Zeo Ranger IV) / Shouhei (OhGreen)
Adam replaced Zack in Season 2 of MMPR. Adam was shy & sensitive and sometimes faltered at a challenge, like when he had to fight in a martial arts competition against Tanya's jackass ex-boyfriend. Shouhei was much more cocky, stubborn and confident.

Tommy (Zeo Ranger I) / Gorou (OhRed)
Gorou is a strong and dependable leader. Tommy was the same leader he always was. When his teammates were danger, he went to the limit, even to the point of risking his life. In Zeo, he discovered he had a brother he never knew of a Native American tribe and he trusted him with his secret.

Riki (King Ranger) / Jason (Gold Ranger)
Riki is a legendary child-like hero who chased the enemies off Earth 600 millions years ago. Jason came back to the team when he was needed to become the Gold Ranger. The difference is obvious, Jason wasn't a immortal warrior who looked super young. However before he got the Gold Ranger powers, they belonged to a prince from the planet Triofia, who went to save planets that needed the help. Jason later gave the power back to him.

Power Rangers/Super Sentai Character Conversion: Alien Rangers/Kakuranger

Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers [1996] / Ninja Sentai Kaku Ranger (Ninja Squadron Hidden Rangers) [1994]

MMAR was a mini-series part of the third-season of MMPR. The Alien Rangers are also referred to as Aquitar Rangers by fans, because they are from the planet of Aquitar, a planet completely covered with water. They were summoned when the Power Rangers we know were turned into children... for the second time and their power coins were destroyed. Kakuranger were teenagers but ninjas. There is not much to compare since the Aquitar Rangers were ill-defined and there was not much character development.

Delphine (White Ranger) / Tsuruhime (Ninja White)
Delphine is the stern and capable un-questioned leader of the Aquitar Rangers. She was somewhat motherly to the Power Rangers, even when they grew up. Tsuruhime is is the most knowledgeable and capable as a leader than Ninja Red. She also had to put up with her dad being evil. The major difference between them was that Tsuruhime was younger than Delphine and her femininity was more pronounced. They were both the first female leader in both franchises. They would be followed by Pink in 2000/2001.

Aurico (Red Ranger) / Sasuke (Ninja Red)
Sasuke was agile, reckless and didn't pay much mind to his flaws, he was also loyal and good-hearted. As far as we can tell, Aurico devises strategies.

Cestro (Blue Ranger)/Saizou (Ninja Blue)
Cestro was brainy and an inventor, so he got along well with Billy. He was the first African-American Blue Ranger, blue would be bestowed to African-American characters two times after him (T.J. in 1998 and Ethan in 2004). Saizou is one of the comedians of the group and likes to help others and children. Major differences is that Cestro was much more concentrated with technology and intelligence, while Saizou was more socialable. Cestro was ignorant when it came to Earth customs.

Corcus (Black Ranger) / Jiraiya (Ninja Black)
Jiraiya was born in Los Angeles and is half-Japanese and speaks English and struggles with his Japanese. His father was a police officer, was killed years ago by man (who was in an agreement by the enemy to save his daughter). He first worked as a spy in order to help the team. Corcus was the one that got the less character development.

Tideus (Yellow Ranger) / Seikai (Ninja Yellow)
Seikai is a joker and indecisive and he's driven by desire for food, sleep, and women. Tideus was a bit cocky, a show-off but that was it. He was the first male Yellow Ranger, followed by Dustin (2003) and Chip (2005).

UPDATED 11/2/09
Ninjor/Ninjaman
I am including Ninjor because Ninjaman is part of Kakuranger. Even though Ninjor never interacted with the Aquitar Rangers in MMPR, it was alluded to that their powers were connected to Ninjor somehow. Ninjaman helped the Kakuranger, he was much like a sixth ranger but he is now considered among the powered allies (with Gunmajin, Signalman, Zuuban, etc.). He would change into SamuraiMan when big. Ninjaman was a pupil of the big three gods, which we know as Ninja Megazord, Shogun Megazord and Falconzord and was tricked by the big bad guy Daimaou. Even though Ninjaman was a big ignorant, Ninjor was stuck up and spoke like a Dudley Do-Right (which annoyed fans). The exclusion of Dulcea and inclusion of him, drove fans to the comedic conclusion that Ninjor was Dulcea in disguise (not seriously of course).

Power Rangers/Super Sentai Character Conversion: MMPR/Zyuranger

In doing the two websites, my partner once requested I compared the ranger's personalities, from the original source Super Sentai and Power Rangers but i thought that would too much and on top of that, hard to decide what website to do that on. So I decided this space is an appropriate place for that.

Firstly I will be comparing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993) and Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger - 1992 (Zyu is pronounced 'Juu', it means 'Beast'). While the first Power Rangers was about teenagers, the original source was much more complicated. They were five cryogenically frozen warriors from five different tribes (hence their outfits) awaken when their rival, the witch Bandora was released.

There was no Zordon or Alpha in Zyuranger, but they had a mentor named Barza, which they used some of his footage to portray Zordon in the past--in the episode "Power Punks" and the special Fan Club video in 1994.

Jason (Red Ranger)/Geki (Tyranno Ranger)
Jason was considered a jock, but he wasn't the typical stereotype which is a stuck-up, mean jock. He was true to the martial-arts type of confident, peaceful and steady. But of course, sometimes he did get competitive. Geki was much more easy-going but a stern leader regardless. When it came to his brother Burai, he wanted to be friends and he had a lot to deal with. He wasn't who he thought he was and had to deal with his brother's vendetta and still forgave his brother and then had to deal with his death. Jason was equally hurt when Tommy lost his powers.

Zachary Taylor (Black Ranger)/Goushi (Mammoth Ranger)
Zack was a happy-go-lucky joker that invented hip-hop kido, a combination of dancing and martial arts. Goushi, was strong and angry, mostly for Bandora (Rita) responsible for his sister's death. They were different in seriousness. Zack would get serious when his friends were in danger. He also chased his lady love Angela, which he eventually did get.

Billy (Blue Ranger)/Dan (Tricera Ranger)
Dan was flirtatious with girls, and acted before thinking, while Billy was all thought and was nervous when it came to girls. Billy started out as a techno-geek capable of inventing wild and super-advanced inventions. He gradually grew into a more confident intelligent man, eventually dumping his trademark eyeglasses. They were different in confidence and they were both comical in different degrees.

Trini (Yellow Ranger) / Boy (Tiger Ranger)
The most obvious difference is that Trini is a girl. Trini was everyone's favorite, a confident and strong woman. Although she had a fear of heights, she got over it and honor was always important to her. And don't mess with her family members! Boy was a plucky young warrior who was of course childish and also, nervous when it came to girls but always obliged to help them. Trini was nervous when it came to boys, primarily Richy.

Kimberly Hart (Pink Ranger) / Mei (Ptera Ranger)
Kimberly has always been thought of as a flaky valley girl, but in reality she was quite strong and resourceful (She landed a plane with Alpha's voice helping when her pilot uncle was drugged). She had to be pretty smart to know Sign-Language (she knew it to communicate with her friend Melissa in Season 1), it is not that easy--believe me. She also had to put up with her parents being divorced and her mother dating again. She always had her parents as her dream couple. She also loved Tommy very much, he was her first love and kiss. Mei was the 'girl' of the Zyuranger and also a warrior princess. She was the heart of their group.

Tommy Oliver (Green Ranger) / Burai (Dragon Ranger)
Burai was bent on revenge on his blood brother because he was jealous and felt his family's honor was in jeopardy. He sided with Bandora and fought the Zyuranger and she took advantage of him. Eventually, he turned to the side of the good guys but unfortunately he was dying because of the manner in which he was cryogenically frozen. Burai died and passed his powers to his brother. Tommy, on the other hand, was a goody-goody martial-arts student that took that seriously and was hopelessly in love with Kimberly and was put under a spell to be evil by Rita. After the spell was broken, he lost his powers--passed them to Jason, gained them again and lost them permanently at the hands of Goldar. Tommy went on to be considered 'the best' and is the only ranger to don four different colors.

The Future of the Power Rangers Part 2

One of my reliable sources says Disney is ditching the animated idea and sticking with live-action and everything is back to normal... for now. According to some rumors and circulation and one source being one of the reliable rumor fans 'poweranimals' (whose real name is Matt) that the next series will be called "Power Rangers R.P.M.," based on the previously blasted-upon by fans series "Engine Sentai Go-Onger." For now, it is a tentative name and fans so far like that it doesn't include the word 'force' in it as three series already have that name ("Time Force," "Wild Force," and "Mystic Force.") By the by, "Operation Overdrive" was almost "Drive Force." Like I said before, we won't know for sure until June in the Licensing Fair when Disney reveals it. Also, my reliable source says the series will be leaving New Zealand and moving to Canada, supposedly cheaper. But that will probably won't have the cool connections that currently have with Japan, footage for opening sequences were shot for two sentai shows in New Zealand. Costumes, props, and even sets have been moved easier since Japan and New Zealand are so close together.

Welcome to Henshin Grid -- The Blog

This is my brand new blog dedicated to all kinds of Tokusatsu (Live-action special effects children's programming) from around the world. On my blog Spanengrish Ramblings, I covered a couple of things on Super Sentai and Power Rangers. I own the unofficial fan website SuperSentai.com and help Power Rangers Central that my partner inherited. I decided to put all my past posts on this blog, including more insights, rumors, and ramblings (of course).
