Mystic Knights Battle Thunder confirmed

I have mentioned Mystic Knights season two here before. Mostly rumors. One webpage mentioned a new character by the name of Liam, Knight of the Swamp. But actually, it was Lightning. Power Rangers Media Info bought media release info from Bandai America back from 1999. Bandai was planning a second season of toys but because of poor toy sales and other circumstances, Saban decided to cancel Mystic Knights. The funds went to Power Rangers. At PMC 3, I asked Scott Page-Pagter and some other producers if a second season was planned and they said no. Maybe they werre not in the know.
I couldn't get a confirmation from a fellow fan but rumors were that the actor who played Angus wanted to leave, hence to the use of Liam. Also Garrett who inherit Angus’ powers somehow. Thanks to PR Media Info.

PMC3: What I learned at Power Morphicon

UPDATED 8/23/12 9:40 AM EST
I love behind the scenes stuff and here are stuff I learned about production and clarifying rumors:
  1. I totally forgot this: Johnny Yong Bosch's name is not really YONG! Yong is his mother's maiden name. Producers wanted him to sound more ASIAN! This shocked Blake Foster, believing him to always be Yong.
  2. ADR (Audio Digital Recording) is usually in post-production, bask in the day it would go along with the same production schedule. They would shoot for 3 episodes at the same time, alternating scenes.
  3. I asked Scott Page-Pagter about Mystic Knights second season and he said he got to travel to Ireland. He told the actors to come to his house when they visit the US. He regretted it because most of them came to crash at his house. So he was with Lisa Dwan (Deirdre) when they were told "Oh did you know we were cancelled?" And it was awkward with her there as they both didn't know. He said they really didn't have any plans for the second season yet. He knew they were mulling it over. He thinks it was cancelled for low toy sales. He seemed to not be aware that the budget was used for Lost Galaxy. I couldn't ask more because time was running out at the panel.
  4. Tony Oliver, Scott Page-Pagter and Mark Litton explained they got chunks of Sentai footage and had to hurry up and worked 3 episodes at the time. They just went by the monster. They didn't worry about the name of the series or what it was.
  5. According to David Stenstrom (voice of King Mondo and dad in Masked Rider), he was told that Masked Rider will be coming to DVD next year. I was surprised to find out that he knows a bit of Kamen Rider and seen some episodes.
  6. I did not know that Phillip Jeanmarie was half Asian and African-American! His wife/significant other is Asian and their child is soooo cute and looks like an Asian version of him according to her.
  7. Hector David Jr. is dating a certain red-headed Nickelodeon actress.
  8. I knew about the flash mob, wanted to go but was in line for the David Yost's panel.
  9. Didn't know that Daniel Southworth worked as a costumed Power rangers on tours.
  10. For RPM, Eddie G. did mean for Gem and Gema to be upbeat and positive opposite the darkness and seriousness of the main 5 (or 4, cutting out Ziggy) compare to Go-Onger that was the opposite where Go-On Wings were more stern.
  11. As for the voice actors like Robert Axelrod, the higher-ups didn't believe he was the voice he auditioned for Zedd. He thought Zedd was a Monster of the Day (MotD) at first. He had voiced Finster and other MotD (like Eye Guy and Goo Fish).
  12. Barbara Goodson's first instruction for Rita was to sound like the Wicked Witch from Wizard of Oz. She did it but then they said it was 'not scary' and they wanted to get someone else. She then did the Rita we know and they were impressed.
  13. Won't say who said it but they said, "Saban's motto is if it isn't broken, break it..." "And then break it again," someone else added.
  14. Barbara Gordon, Kerrigan Mahan and Robert Axelrod were actors that worked for Saban for a while already and were naturally going to do MMPR.
  15. The "Reel Fish Story" is one of David Yost's favorite episodes.
  16. Catherine Sutherland calls Karan Ashley "Beyonce" because Karan started doing it.
  17. I gave Gabrielle Fitzpatrick my two Dulcea trading cards because she said she never had any. I told her there was a ton of Dulcea merch.
  18. The voice actor Kerrigan Mahan changed Goldar's voice because constantly speaking in a gravely voice it "got to a point when i'd have to stop tape and rest my throat, doing Goldar really did a number on me." He also said that at first, he was really trying it out, trying to find the voice. He was surprised people thought it was another actor.
  19. Sabrina Lu (Scorpina) and Christopher Cho (Nukus from Beetleborgs Metallix) both got their jobs because "they fit in the suits."
  20.  I am remembering more stuff now. Like how Sabrina Lu (Scorpina) says she got the job for 'Goldar's Vice Versa' because she fit the suit. She heard that people thought she was not available for other episodes, she says it is not true, that she was available. She wasn't called back.
  21. Ron Rogge thought the role of Captain Mitchell was a small role and shocked when it was bigger when he got it. It was meant for an older guy so he put grey in his hair.
  22. A 50 year-old British was to be Captain Mitchell but he was to go to vacation and Ron Rogge got the role.
  23. Also Tony Oliver was only to write the Bulk and Spike stuff for Power Rangers Samurai.
  24. Johnny Bosch says the 'Veteran Rangers' of Operation Overdrive could really drink him under the table.
  25. When asked about the voices they used when Austin, Thuy and Walter left, they used footage of them and their voices from before but sometimes you could clearly hear someone else's voice. Tony Oliver says he mostly used their voices and tried to match it. He revealed that he actually dubbed over Austin's voice. I think it sounded good.

Mystic Knights Battle Thunder: What Could Have Been

Mystic Knights of Tira Na Nog was made by Saban and aired from 1998 to 1999. It was the first live-action Saban series, other than Next Mutation, that did not use Tokusatsu footage. It was shot in Ireland and in Germany, it had a better different theme song than we heard in the US.  There was a rumored second season called Battle Thunder. The official logo below, so it did go enough pre-production to have a logo. Some sources say they saw prototypes for the toys and that production even started.

This website above claims to have a new Knight, Seanin, the Mystic Knight of the Swamp.

From the site: "Seanin was discovered from the same piece of scroll, that the rest of the knights were foretold in. Only one thing is different, Seanin is evil. Queen Maeve learns of him and decides that he will be perfect to fight against the good Mystic Knights. Seanin's elemental call is Death Below Me. His weapons is a wicked scimitar and his armour is steel plate and chainmail."

"Also from site: Joseph Barton, a 23 year old, was born in Atlantic City, NJ in 1975. (Meaning this was written in 1998.) He grew up in Galway, Ireland, taking an interest in fencing at the age of 10 (and eventually began a study in the arts as well.  Among his talents are irish stepdancing, singing and acting. He speaks French, plays piano and the Uillean Pipes, and has performed in several musicals in Dublin and Britain. "I haven't had any major roles," he mentions in an online interview in January, but his Mystic Knights role is sure to raise his profile a little more.  Joseph shared a few thoughts on his newest gig as Seanin, commenting "I think the writers figured Maeve didn't have a shot with 5 knights against her." He describes Seanin as "a villain.", "quite unique", with armor made of real steel instead of the fiberglass used in his castmates' costumes. "[Steel is] more evil looking I guess," says Joseph.  "..don't feel bad if you don't like my character." Seanin is apparently as evil as they come. He sounds like the kind of guy his fans will love to hate.  Look for Seanin, the Mystic Knight of Swamp to debut in the Mystic Knights of Tir-Na-Nog this fall."

And sadly, it never happened. But no knowledge if this is official. It could be fake and be online since 1998. I never saw it but I did know about the logo. As you can tell, there is very little information about Mystic Knights second season. I liked Mystic Knights even though it wasn't accurate celtic fantasy and had lots of recycled monsters from past Saban shows. Some sources has 'Death Below Me' as 'Swamps Below Me' which makes more sense. But from the picture, he doesn't look so 'swampy.'

Power Rangers: Almost Canceled?

UPDATED 8/3/12
The following are speculations and rumors and nothing confirmed, the only one that was for sure was that Disney was quitting on Power Rangers by 2010. These are rumored instances of when Power Rangers was 'almost canceled.'

By Season 3, Power Rangers' ratings started to decline but Toy sales remained high enough to make the show profitable to all the companies involved. It was said that Big Bad Bettleborgs beat PR in the ratings for a short time. They then decided to change the name, suits, everything except most of the cast for Zeo and ratings were better.

The first half of Turbo had low ratings and sequel got mixed reviews and not a whole lot of profit, leading the crew to think their time was almost up. But the second half of Turbo had better ratings and led them to do In Space. They got Judd Lynn to lead the way for the second half, old plots were abandoned (like Divatox/Dimitria), no more Lerigot, and 4 new castmembers. I don't know if Fox Kids threatened them to cancel them or not.

A lot of evidence leads fans believe the crew thought Power Rangers in Space was the final season was because of the bringing together of old villains, the search of Zordon and of course the finale--that brought together Blue Senturion, Phantom Ranger, Gold Ranger and the Aquitar Rangers and the destruction of all known villains. But because of high ratings, the crew was led to make another season. I think by this season, they were expecting to just close up shop and wasn't threatened to be cancelled. Bandai did help with the budget for the Battlizer and continued to do so.

Lost Galaxy was also thought to be the last season, Saban was only producing Mystic Knights. Mystic Knights, the first live-action Saban did that had no existing Japanese Tokusatsu footage was to have a second season but they opted not to do it and all the budget was allocated to the second part of Lost Galaxy. Ratings were passable for Lost Galaxy so they continued. They had a lot of budget for Lightspeed, ratings were great for Lightspeed and Time Force. To give you an idea of the budgets, I made the chart above. 1995-1996 and 1997-1998 were the only two times they had 3 shows filming at the same time: Season 3 of MMPR, VR Troopers Season 2, and Masked Rider; Power Rangers in Space, Beetleborgs Metalix and Ninja Turtles: Next Mutation. While Turbo, Space and Lost Galaxy ran in the course of one year and not between two years, Beetleborgs, Mystic Knights and Next Mutation ran between two years, from September to Spring. Also, Beetleborg monsters were used for seasons of Power Rangers starting with 'In Space' and also Mystic Knights.

Rumor is that Jungle Fury was going to be the last season because it was the last one Disney really promoted and it was the last one to air on Toon Disney. When Toon Disney became Disney XD, Power Rangers was knocked out and new episodes only aired on ABC. RPM got no promotional photos like past Disney seasons, almost no promotion, very little merchandise (save for the toys) and it was rumored that the only reason they did RPM was because Bandai released the toys. Judd Lynn swears Disney did care about PR during RPM, I believe at least at a production standpoint. Even though not officially 'canceled' since MMPR reversion aired in 2010, production did stop in New Zealand and Disney was in conversations to sell it back to Saban. It is rumored Bandai helped with the budget, not for new Rangers or Battlizers, just for budget all together. So Power Rangers was never officially canceled but ratings did get low and there was rumors of it being 'the end.' The closest thing to being 'canceled' was the 5 months between the reversion being off the air (in September) to when Power Rangers Samurai premiered in February.

Mystic Knights: Battle Thunder was the planned second season of Mystic Knights but never happened. Of all the Saban shows, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to Lost Galaxy are available on DVD, so are VR Troopers, Beetleborgs and Ninja Turtles: Next Mutation. It has not yet been announced if Mystic Knights or Masked Rider will be DVD yet, but I suppose they will be some day.

Heronies in other Saban Tokusatsu

Kaitlin Star (VR Troopers, 1994-1996)
Kaitlin was the only female part of the VR Troopers. She wore white, red, and yellow. In her other VR form, she had the helmet of the Red Ranger with white, red and yellow. In the second season, her mirror twin became her Double mode, which was footage of another hero Helen Lady in Speilban. My personal theory as to why VR Troopers was canceled because they didn't have footage of a girl hero anymore. I don't know why they didn't just use the B-Fighter footage, it was team of three as well, I guess Saban wanted to start fresh with Beetleborgs. And fans arguably liked that more than VRT.

Red Striker Borg (BBB, 1996)
The sole female in Big Bad Beetleborgs, it was the same as Reddle in B-Fighter. As I have mentioned before, the actresses were switched on both shows, as a coincidence and not planned.

Plantinum Purple Borg (Beetleborgs Metallix, 1997)
The Beetleborgs Metallix were unique to the B-Fighters Kabuto that they had Mega Spectra Armor (Mega Sector Armour) like the Power Rangers' Battlizers. The armors didn't appear in the original B-Fighters. There was also the Ladyborg but she had no human counterpart. She is the only female purple warrior in the Saban camp.

Deirdre, Mystic Knight of Air (Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog, 1998)
Mystic Knights was an original production by Saban, not related to a Japanese Tokusatsu show at all. Her armor was white. She like the other females in this post were by themselves. She was a fiercely independent princess.

American Tokusatsu during MMPR Hey-Day

In 1994, because of the success of Power Rangers, the next fall season of 1994 had many imitators, some from Saban, some that weren't. I'll start with those that were not from Saban. I am not covering Kamen Rider Dragon Knight because I am only covering the 90's.

NOT SABAN

Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad
Not made by Saban, it was produced by DiC, best known for animated fare like Inspector Gadget, Rainbow Brite and dubbing Sailor Moon. It starred Joey Lawrence's younger brother Matthew Lawrence. It aired from September 1994 to Summer 1995 syndicated (meaning it aired off network on local channels). A couple episodes did air in the summer of 1995 on ABC. There were 52 episodes and it was based on the Japanese series Gridman, which had a similar plot. This show has its followers, it may have had a second season if Gridman had a second season, one was planned but never happened. Gridman was not from Toei--which most of the tokusatsu was bought by Saban and the SSSS toys were made by Playmates toys (best known for Ninja Turtles).
Plot: Sam and his rock band tap into cyberspace to fight evil viruses. Kilokahn (voiced by Tim Curry) wanted to take over the world and used the young British outsider Malcolm to do this evil deeds. I covered the differences with Gridman on this post.

Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills
It aired on the USA Network from October 1994 to later in 1995 with 40 episodes, produced partly by DiC and the USA Network. Rumor was that they were supposed to get footage from a Japanese show, but they were forced to go low-budget and make their own footage. At the time, I thought the show was cheap and rude, but in reality the show was much like a parody. The four didn't quite like each other, they weren't friends before and were rude to each other. The bird cohort of Gorganus seemed to be re-used from the Flintstones movie (The Dictabird). This show wasn't popular at all in ratings, it had no toys and almost zero promotion.
Plot: Four spoiled teenagers (not friends) from Beverly Hills transformed into muscle-building Sentinels and fought the same monsters day in and day out from the evil Emperor Gorganus.
My post about the show.

SABAN PRODUCTIONS
VR Troopers
Saban wanted to build on the success of Power Rangers, but not share with FOX Kids, so he made another deal with Toei to use the footage from Metalder, which was part of the Metal Hero series. He got Jason David Frank, after filming "Green Candle" and shot the pilot called Cybertron with a catchy theme song by Ron W. But because of the success of the Green Ranger, they decided to bring Tommy back. Brad Hawkins was hired to be the White Ranger but switched and offered this show that was named VR Troopers, with footage of Speilban and two other actors. It aired from 1994 to 1996, two seasons, it was popular but it is unknown why it was canceled. The toys were made by Kenner (best known for Star Wars), not Bandai America.
Plot: Ryan Steele sought his father, who was taken prisoner by Grimlord, a evil being bent on taking over our world, from his virtual reality. Ryan and his friends, using technology from his father, save the world.

Saban's Masked Rider
Premiered in 1995, spin-off from Power Rangers in Season 3. The show itself severed any connections with Power Rangers. This was based on Kamen Rider Black RX, which as produced by Toei and it upset the creator, so much that they no longer wanted Kamen Rider to be tied to Saban. Toei would try again with Kamen RIder Dragon Knight with Adness in 2009. It aired for one year 1995 to 1996 on FOX Kids and then in syndication under Saban's syndication block years later, but in repeats of course. From 1995-1996, it was the only time Saban productions had 3 series like this filming and airing at the same time. Toys were made by Bandai America like Power Rangers.
Plot: Prince Dex came from the planet Edenoi to stop his evil Uncle Dregon from conquering the Earth and lived with a mixed-race family.

Big Bad Beetleborgs
This aired after Masked Rider and VR Troopers ended. It aired from 1996 to 1998 on FOX Kids, it aired for two seasons, it had 53 episodes. Based on another Toei series B-Fighter and B-Fighter Kabuto. It was popular and would have had a third season, but they had no more footage, they had plans to do a third season without the footage but didn't happen. By this point, only Power Rangers and Beetleborgs were in production. Toys were made by Bandai America like Power Rangers and Masked Rider.
Plot: Three kids happen by a haunted mansion and are granted a wish by a genie to become their favorite comic book superheroes.

Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog
This aired after Beetleborgs ended. This was Saban's first attempt at an action series with no Toei footage or any Japanese footage as it was. It aired from 1998 to 1999, 50 episodes. A second season (Mystic Knights: Battle Thunder) was planned but it never happened. It was shot in Ireland but had little to do with real Irish mythology. It was a bit popular. FOX Kids blamed this show for the Young Hercules series not succeeding. This was Saban's last attempt at a sibling series for Power Rangers. When Mystic Knights ended, its budget went to PR, giving Lost Galaxy a bigger budget. Toys were made by Bandai America like Power Rangers, Masked Rider and Beetleborgs.
Plot: Four warriors fight Queen Maeve of Temra from ruling the kingdom of Kells with the help of fairies and dragons.

Actor's Faces in Power Rangers Toys

This idea was given to me by fellow fan Raul Ramirez.

Auto-Morphin Power Rangers (Season Two)
I remember in the 1994 TV Guide Interview, Thuy Trang had said she didn't have the figures yet with their faces on it, the interview was before they were released, around the same time. The toys came out in Fall of 1994. They looked somewhat like them, I think the ones that look most like them was Jason, Tommy and Billy.
Actors: David Yost (Billy), Thuy Trang (Trini), Austin St. John (Jason), Walter Jones (Zack), Amy Jo Johnson (Kimberly) and Jason Frank (Tommy).

UPDATED 7/23/09
Doll Assortment
I totally forgot about these. I was the one that added them to the toy section on PRC, funny enough. I bought the Pink Ranger for my niece for Christmas way back when (in 1994), she loved it. She loved Kimberly. Anyway, they made one of Trini and Aisha as well. They repackaged the Kimberly and Aisha in sets in regular version and 'movie' sparkly version. Also, for Zeo they had planned Tommy, Tanya and Katherine but that never happened.

Season Three Auto-Morphin
When three actors were replaced, they got toys but the next year. Karen Ashley (Aisha), David Frank (Tommy), Steve Cardenas (Rocky), and Johnny Bosch (Adam). There was also movie versions.

Zeo Auto-Morphin
Tommy's head clearly looks like the one from the White Ranger. Rocky looks like a new head. Fans often take Katherine's head and attached it to MMPR Pink Ranger. David Frank (Tommy), Nakia Bruise (Tanya), Katherine Sutherland (Kat), Steve Cardenas (Rocky), Austin St. John (Jason) and Johnny Bosch (Adam).

Turbo Shifters
They had a different name but it was Auto-Morphing. I am not sure but it kind of looks like they got new models. David Frank (Tommy), Nakia Bruise (Tanya), Katherine Sutherland (Kat), Blake Foster (Justin), Austin St. John (Jason) and Johnny Bosch (Adam).

Lost Galaxy 10" Auto Morphin Power Rangers
2 years later and no Auto-Morphin to get 10" tall. Domon's figure look sort of like him, except for the red lips. Leo and Kai don't look like the actors. Danny Slavin (Leo), Reggie Rolle (Domon), and Archie Kao (Kai).

Time Force - Talking Ultra Power Rangers and Time Force Auto Morphin Rangers
The Auto-Morphin Rangers were only available in the United Kingdom. Only Lucas didn't really look like him. As for the Talking Ultra Power Rangers, the promotional picture of Daniel as Eric on the box was the first sight that fans had of the actor's face. The Lucas of the Talking Ultra figure looked like him but not in skin color. Jason Faunt (Wes), Kevin Kleinberg (Trip), Michael Copon (Lucas), and Daniel Southworth (Eric).

Wild Force Auto-Morphin
The Auto-Morphin came back for the female figures after five years. Alyssa looks nothing like her. Max, Danny, and Taylor sort of look alike. The Merrick picture is from the bigger figures. I don't have the picture of the Aut0-Morphin Merrick. Also, Zen-Aku flipped his head into Lunar Wolf Ranger head. Ricardo Medina, Jr. (Cole), Alyson Kiperman (Taylor), Phillip Jeanmarie (Max), Jessica Rey (Alyssa), Jack Guzman (Danny), and Phillip Andrew (Merrick).

Battlized Warrior Rangers
Danny, Max, Leo, and Merrick with Battlizers.

Ninja Storm - Talking Ninja Battle Power Rangers and Weapon Warrior Power Rangers and Red Wind Tsunami Cycle with Ninja Ranger
I don't have a good picture of Cam so didn't put it. Well, the Hunter and Dustin pics aren't specular either, but whatever. Tori was the only and may be the only 12" female figure and extremely hard to find. For Talking Ninja Battle figures, there was five and the Green Samurai Ranger had just flip helmet. Shane had maybe like 3 figures with face. And the males got Weapon Warrior Power Rangers. Cam got the Weapon Wariror and R/C Ninja Glider Cycle. I also think there was an early Red Ranger with a Caucasian (white) face, not looking at all like Shane. Pua Magasiva (Shane), Sally Martin (Tori), Glenn McMillan (Dustin), Adam Tuominen (Hunter), Jorgito Vargas Jr. (Blake), and Jason Chan (Cam).

Mega Battlized Talking Power Ranger, 12" Triassic Ranger & Raptor Cycle, Talking Thunder Power Rangers
Connor had like 5 or 6 figures, two battlized, one with a bike and others were the talking ones. Tommy had two figures, they look like him. Trent had two, one battlized and one talking. Ethan got one but I don't know if it looked like him. James Napier (Connor), Kevin Duhaney (Ethan), Jason David Frank (Tommy), and Jeffrey Parazzo (Trent).

SPD - Talking Power Rangers
They were not show-accurate at all, I don't have a picture of the Blue Ranger, but I am sure they didn't look like the actors. The problem is that these figures were produced before the show premiered. Brandon Jay McLaren (Jack), Chris Violette (Sky), and Matt Austin (Bridge).

Mystic Sound Power Rangers
This is probably the last time the females get figures with the actress' faces. They all look fairly accurate except for Nick. Firass Dirani (Nick), Angie Diaz (V), Richard Brancatisano (Xander), Melanie Vallejo (Madison), and Nic Sampson (Chip).

Operation Overdrive Moto-Morph Rangers
Mac and Tyzonn look accurate but the others don't. Mac got two other versions. James Maclurcan (Mac), Samuell Benta (Will), Gareth Yuen (Dax), and Dwayne Cameron (Tyzonn).

Series that didn't have figures modeled after the actor's faces: Power Rangers in Space, Lightspeed Rescue, Jungle Fury, and RPM.

Rangers that get didn't figures with a face: Katherine (MMPR), Andros, Cassie, Carlos, Ashley, TJ, Zhane, Karone, Kendrix, Maya, Mike, Carter, Dana, Joel, Kelsey, Chad, Ryan, Jen, Katie, Kira, Z, Syd, Daggeron, Rose, Ronnie, Casey, Theo, Lilly, RJ, Dominick, etc.

UPDATED JULY 24, 2009 3PM EST
Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog
All the Mystic Knight figures had the actors' faces because obviously their masks didn't cover everything. There were 2 figures for each I believe. They all fairly looked like their actors.
Actors: Lochlainn O'Mearain, Lisa Dwan, Vincent Walsh, Justin Pierre, Ben Palmer

Beetleborgs Metallix/Force
Beetle Blast'n Beetleborgs

For the second season, they had the figures in the new versions and same but with coating of their last colors. The faces slightly looked like the actors. Jo was hard to tell, as two actresses played her.
Wesley Barker, Herbie Baez, and Brittany Konarzewski

Saban's Masked Rider
Ecto Accelerating Masked Rider and Karate Kickin' Dex
There were three figures of 'Ecto Accelerating' which were like Auto-Morphin, but they all changed into Dex. Dex got his own figure that sort of looked like his outfit on his show--it looks more like suspenders than a jacket. Actor: T.J. Roberts
