MMPR Cover Song to be released Friday

YOKO KANNO VOCALIST RAJ RAMAYYA RELEASES POWER RANGERS THEME SONG COVER
Song celebrates franchise’s latest theatrical release in North America

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA – March 24th, 2017 - Music production company Strawberry Hill Music is pleased to announce that singer-songwriter Raj Ramayya has released a heavy metal cover version of the iconic Power Rangers theme song “Go Go Power Rangers”, in recognition of the release of the franchise’s newest film release Saban’s Power Rangers. The song is available for both download and streaming on digital music services like Spotify, Google Play, Amazon Music, Pandora, etc worldwide.

The song was originally written by American musician Ron Wasserman under the pseudonym Aaron Waters – The Mighty RAW and released as a single in the United States on CD & cassette on December 2nd, 1994. Wasserman would later release a remastered version of the song on iTunes and Bandcamp in 2012 as part of his Power Rangers Redux album.

Initially, the song was covered and released for the franchise’s first theatrical release “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie” on May 30th, 1995 by the Power Rangers Orchestra, whose members included Mr. Big front man Eric Martin and former Guns ‘n Roses drummer Matt Sorum. Popular Japanese rock vocalist Maasaki Endoh (JAM Project) would also cover the song for his cover album Enson, released on June 11th, 2008.

On August 19th, 2016, Ramayya released a cover version of the Pokémon theme song to celebrate the franchise’s 20th anniversary, and a remixed version by the late James Laurence of the EDM group Friendzone was released on December 16th later on that year and dubbed the LVC “Sun & Moon” Remix in recognition of the latest instalments of the Nintendo handheld game series, Pokémon Sun Version & Pokémon Moon Version. On February 28th earlier this year, Ramayya released “Butter-Fly (Dual World Version)”, a cover of the Digimon Adventure opening theme originally recorded by the late J-Pop artist Kouji Wada. All songs are available for download and streaming on digital music services worldwide.

ABOUT RAJ RAMAYYA: Raj Ramayya is an Indo-Canadian singer, composer and lyricist based in Marin County, California. His claim to anime fame would be his musical collaborations with famed Japanese composer Yoko Kanno as a member of The Seatbelts. Ramayya sang the opening credits song "Ask DNA" and wrote the lyrics for "Cosmic Dare (Pretty with a Pistol)" from the fan favourite feature film Cowboy Bebop: the Movie, and both sang and wrote the lyrics for "Strangers" from the anime series Wolf's Rain. Not limited to music in anime, he has also worked on songs for video games from the likes of Konami, Sega, and Capcom.

Ramayya has been featured as a guest vocalist/composer with several distinguished artists, ranging from talented composers Yoko Kanno (Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain) and Tatsuya Oe (Captain Funk, Hotei), to gifted lyricists Chris Mosdell (Eric Clapton, YMO) and Ron Sexsmith, and everyone in-between. His work has won him multiple awards and critical acclaim from around the world.

Among his other projects are the alternative Indian-influenced folk rock band "The Beautiful Losers", the anime cover band “Raj and the Zen Masters”, the electronic Indian fusion music project "Bhang Lassi", and session singing for products ranging from Asahi Beer and KFC, to Toyota and Coca-Cola. He is also a guest vocalist with three different Japanese electronic music groups; Captain Funk, Akakage, and Studio Apartment, with SA's song "Strawberry Rainbow" (which Ramayya both sang and wrote lyrics for) hitting #1 on the iTunes Japan charts.

INTRODUCING: EYESHINE

Hey folks, happy thanksgiving. Hope you all havve a good time enjoying your turkey and your family. Thank you for having me as a writer on the blog, and now I'd like give my thanks to some very special people that though some of you may heard of once or twice, but probably don't know very well.

(left to right: Polo Yazaki, Johnny Yong Bosch, Maurice Salmin, Crystal Mesina)
As some of you may know, Johnny Yong Bosch, after leaving power rangers, became an anime voice actor, and a rocker. But what is this band that he is a member of? well, as stated in the eyeshine panel at PMC3, after having financial problems, Johnny had to make a decission with one of his last possessions (a guitar): play it or sell it. Of course he chose to play it. eventually he met drummer Maurice Salmin, and became the "Lennon/McCartney" of modern rock (though this was still sort of in their "Lennon/Sutcliff" stage). Much like how the Beatles were originally called the Quarrymen, Eyeshine were originally called "Partly cloudy", but then decided the name was stupid. After watching an episode of "Crocodile Hunter", having the late Steve Irwin talk about looking for a crocodile's eyeshine at night, they decided, that should be their new name.

The band mainly consisted of four members, who changed at various points, leading to Johnny with lead vocals/rhythm guitar, Maurice on drums/backup vocals, Crystal Mesina on bass, and Eddie Colmenares on lead guitar. At that point, they've performed at many anime conventions, at PMC1, and released their 4th LP album "Tone of Echoes" (the first three being "How About That", "Red Stripes and White Lights" and "My Paper Kingdom"). In their whole career they did a number of music videos, including "Our Whole Lives Tonight", directed by my good friend, Jason Narvy.

Sometime after losing the first Gimme The Gig competition in 2011, Eddie left the band, and was replaced by their sub guitarist, Masataka "Polo" Yazaki. Eddie then joined another band, and on occasion comes to the band's regular venue to perform, and give friendly support to the band. At that point, Eyeshine were at their best. The music blended so perfectly, and teamwork was just phenomenal. Now, i'm not saying that they were worse before or after, but to ever fan, there is one era in a band's carreer that they find most savoury, and for me, that was it. At that point, they finished their acoustic album "Afterglow", and started working on their 5th LP "Revolution Airwaves". After being reinvited to Gimme The Gig II in 2012, the band scored an amazing victory in the finals, granting them a chance to perform a music video for their song "Stratosphere" under the direction of Don Was. Sadly, this led to the dark age of the band.

Sometime after the competition, Crystal tragically left the band due to family and financial reasons. without a bassist, they had to work around gigs they've already booked by doing accoustic instead of full electric. Luckily, while searching for a replacement, Eyeshine's sister band, Service Interuption lended them their bass player, Zack Duncan. Thanks to Zack's help, they were able to perform to their fullest, even in PMC3, and from the fans' reaction (which I was a part of), they did not disappoint. before the actual concert at PMC, they had a panel with Q/A and music in the background. the next day there was an accoustinc Q/A where they answered in song form, but sadly i can't come because it was a gold event and and a communication error made me short one guest pass. but here's the the basic panel:
Recently, they've been able to find a perminant bassist in Ginny Eck. who joined the band sometime between PMC3 and Sept 5th. Now that the band is complete again, they are trying to rock out harder than they ever could, including a 2nd accoustic album, 2 new music videos "Consuming Fire", and "Broken and Abused", and a special surpise that I promised Johnny I wouldn't tell, but stay tuned for it when it comes. They still play at 2nd St. Jazz club every first Wednesday of the month (the next being Dec. 5th)
How I came aquanted with the band? Well, as some of you may know, Jason Narvy is a friend of mine, and both of us are huge Shakespeare buffs. On my 19th birthday, he got to hang out while he was playing a comedy version of hamlet (which if you really think about it, is a comedy....tragic...but a comedy). but right before he left home to pack for Chicago, he told me to check out the band. Of course I did, and was exited to find johnny was in it. I didn't put too much focus on them just yet but it was kinda cool that my favorite ranger was a rocker. But then last October, I was attending the opening of a toku art museum, and heard a band performing outside. I was surprised to hear it was the band that featured my hero from age 3. After the show, we got to chat for a bit, which was awesome. Afterwards, I started going to gigs, and I was even recognised as the "fedora guy" (long story).....anyways, a whole year has passed, and Johnny and Maurice are now good friends of mine. Looking back, it's funny when your classmates pretend to be friends with rangers, and then you become actual friends with one....and your all-time favorite no less. Granted, I don't go to gigs because he's a ranger....I do it because he's part of an awesome band, and i see a lot of friends rocking out with me. In fact when I watch PR episodes with him in them, it's hard to believe that guy in the show is a personal aquaintance.
Eyeshine is a local LA band, and aren't signed by a label. Not many people know them, but millions of PR and anime fans have heard of them through Johnny's wikipedia, PMC, anime conventions, youtube, or happen to have friends who already listen to them. You can check the band out on youtuble, eyeshine.net, like them on facebook, or follow on twitter, and follow their adventures on their documentary series "Eyeshine Experience". And if they happen to perform in your home town, like Tampa FL last weekend, for example, be sure to check them out.

PMC 3: Ron Wasserman Panel

I have no video on Ron Wasserman, basically because he was saying some incriminating stuff and I didn't know how he would feel. I am sure other people recorded but I just didn't want to risk it. Anyway, he would have asked to take the cameras away. With my insane troll logic, I will write it but not have video. Anyways, this is what went down:

Ron Wasserman was saying that he will re-record most of his songs from MMPR and the theme because he likes the new technology and equipment. He says it is unconnected to Saban Brands or any producers. Someone asked about the Power Rangers Samurai theme, he said it was okay. And if he was asked to do the theme? He says they called him to do it, he said okay. Then a month passed and then another month passed and nothing. So he e-mailed them and they e-mailed back something like, 'thank you but we found somebody.' The whole audience said 'aww.'

About the SPD theme, he said he made one and then they told him to change it so he added changes. As for the Mystic Force one, he made the song we heard and Disney didn't like it, they wanted a rap. He then leaked his song and they got upset. They said he shouldn't have done that. Then he said there is difference between 'shouldn't' and 'couldn't.' Maybe I got this wrong. I am sure MorphinLegacy will correct me or someone else.

When asked about the Gold Ranger theme, he wasn't sure if he did it or not. He said he was with Saban from 1993 to 1995 and things were heated by 1995. He did the background music for the movie but it was dumped because some higher ups didn't like it. He was upset about that. As for the Bulk and Skull theme, he said Bulk is the tuba and Skull is the other instrument. And for the songs with lyrics in Season 3, he added them rather quickly. He came up with most songs within one or two days.

Here is one interesting story:
Valerie Bertinelli was married to Eddie Van Halen and they have a kid together. Ron does music now for Hot in Cleveland which Valerie stars in. Ron went to her house and met Van Halen. Van Halen said, 'you know I played for a band called Van Halen?" Van Halen even wanted to know from Ron how to play the MMPR theme on the guitar, he said his friend was trying to figure it out. Ron Wasserman explained that the guitar rift was done by the computer, impossible for a guitar to do. When Van Halen heard this, he said, "Oh... I knew that."

UPDATED 8/23/12
He also said that he was he was given the name 'Mighty Raw' by Saban management. They were like 'you're now 'Mighty Raw.' He said okay. Ron was born Ron Aaron Wasserman and made his name 'Aaron Waters' because 'Wasser' means Water and basically his name is 'Water-Man.' I remember hearing the song for the pilot of "Cybertron" starring Jason David Frank, which became VR Troopers. The song sounded a lot like the 'Go Green Ranger' song and had the words 'Cybertron.' I asked him about the song, he said they had to change it so he added 'Green Ranger.' He said that Power Rangers originally was called 'Metal Man.' I think he meant VR Troopers but oh well.

AnimeGamer75 got it, thank you:

Titanium Ranger Music Video

Little something I threw together.

Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of 'fair use.' The recent amendments to the Copyright Act of 1976 pertain to music. 'Fair use' remains in force for film and video.

Ron Wasserman's Connections with Power Rangers Music

Ron Wasserman is an American music artist, also known as Aaron Waters and The Mighty RAW, best known for the theme song for MMPR, and for the large volume of original songs recorded for the first few seasons. He has been with the labels Rawfish and Saban Music Group. He started a rock band in the mid 1980s with present day voice actress E.G. Daily. Shortly after the band disbanded, he started working for Saban Entertainment in 1989, filling-in for one afternoon and eventually staying there for six and a half years. While there, he developed scores and co-wrote themes for several series such as the animated X-Men series, Sweet Valley High and VR Troopers. He was presented with the first footage of the show, was told to use the word "Go", and to have it finished by the next day. After two and a half hours, the song that resulted was the show's iconic theme song.

Several of his most popular songs and scores were eventually released on a successful concept album entitled Power Rangers: A Rock Adventure, which linked his music around a variation on the opening episodes of season two of the television series. While working on the show, Saban asked Wasserman to come up with an artist name, as they did not want it to appear as though one person was doing all of the music. He came up with the name "Aaron Waters" because his middle name was Aaron and the name Wasserman means "water carrier" in German. "Go Go Power Rangers" was released by Saban Records on CD and cassette in the US on December 2, 1994. Simon Cowell played a part on it getting radio play. For the MMPR Movie, a new arrangement of "Go Go Power Rangers" was recorded and performed by "The Power Rangers Orchestra": which featured former Mr. Big front man Eric Martin, guitarist Tim Pierce, former Pablo Cruise bass player John Pierce, singer-pianist Kim Bullard, and then Guns N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum.

When Saban was preparing a second Tokusatsu series, which eventually became VR Troopers, the pilot was called Cybertron and Wasserman composed the theme song. When it was decided Jason David Frank would continue as the Green Ranger on MMPR, the Cybertron theme song was re-worded to be the infamous "Go Green Ranger" song. Wasserman left Saban in 1995, citing exhaustion. He returned to Power Rangers franchise in 2005, composing the theme song for Power Rangers: S.P.D.. News of his involvement reached the fanbase and demo versions of the theme were leaked, upsetting Disney executives. He did pitched two different theme songs for Mystic Force that followed their "rap/hip hop" recommendations for the theme, but it did not get used. He later contributed an instrumental version of his rock theme, as well as scoring work (for free) for Celestial Fury, a fanfilm.
