Gender Bias in Power Rangers #2: Feminine Colors

UPDATED 2/3/11
Not only bias in Power Rangers, but in Super Sentai.
I did this before but other queries and curiosities enter my mind under further study....

Out of the 32 teams in Super Sentai, there has only been 15 teams (Bioman, Changeman, Flashman, Maskman, Fiveman, Jetman, Ohranger, Carranger, Megaranger, Dekaranger, Magiranger, Boukenger, Go-onger, Shinkenger, Goseiger, and Gokaiger) that has had more than one female hero. Only 2 series had more than two heronies and those are Dekaranger and Magiranger. In the 17 Power Ranger teams, there have been only 3 teams with one female. To Clarify: Super Sentai: 15 had two girls, 19 had one and 1 team had none; Power Rangers: 13 had two girls and 3 had one.

In Super Sentai, the only colors females have so far been allowed to wear are pink, yellow, white, blue, a bit of Orange (DekaSwan), and metals (silver and gold). And when wearing blue, all of them have white or grey legs. And out of the four female blue warriors, only one was the same shade of blue as her male counterparts, all others were a light blue.

In Gokaiger, girls have been allowed to be colors they weren't allowed before. GokaiPink and GokaiYellow got to be female versions of originally male rangers of Navy (KuwagataRaijer), Black (Go-On Black, Black Bison, Ninja Black), Red (Ginga Red, Hime Shinken Red, Magi Red, Geki Red), Gold (Zuuban), Green (Shishiranger and Green Flash), Silver (Mega Silver), White (Geki Chopper, AbareKiller, etc.) and Yellow (Various including Hurricane Yellow, Magi Yellow, Tiger Ranger, etc,). But they did not get to be Violet, but oh well. So of colors they never got to be before were: Black, Red, and Green.

And if there is two girls in a team, the only color combinations that there has been have been pink and yellow (very common), pink and white (Changeman), white and blue (Jetman), pink and blue (Magiranger) and now yellow and silver (Go-onger). Never has there been yellow and white nor yellow and blue in Super Sentai. Power Rangers is the only one to have the distinction of having a female red ranger until 2009 when a female Shinken Red was revealed in Super Sentai. Power Rangers has had two girls in a team that were yellow and white: Wild Force, but in its counterpart Gaoranger, yellow was male, so Super Sentai has never had yellow and white females in the same team. In Power Rangers, there has been blue and yellow but only in the episodes featuring the Blue Wind Ranger and Yellow Dino Ranger: "Thunder Storm" and "Once A Ranger." Also to be clear, in Power Rangers, there has yet to be female duo of the colors pink and white, white and blue. In Mystic Force and Power Rangers, there has been pink, white and blue but not just two of them.

In Super Sentai, men have been granted every color under the sun: Red, Blue, Green, Black, Yellow, White, Silver, Gold, Violet, Orange, different shades varieting those and etc.

The colors women (in Sentai) have not allowed to be yet are: Violet.

Power Rangers RPM

Well, there is finally a title to the 2009 Power Rangers and it is called Power Rangers RPM. So far there has been pictures of the red and blue ranger, called Eagle Ranger and Lion Ranger. In Go-Onger, the red Engine is half condor and half racecar. It has been changed to Eagle, it is unclear if this will be kept for the series. Like all the other logos before it, this logo is better than the fan-made logos, it of course has a tire like the Go-Onger logo but doesn't use all the same colors.

I figured the Green Engine which is Orca/motorcyle would be changed to shark and above it says Shark Cycle for the green (even though it doesn't look like a shark), so there you go. One fan on a board joked that the sixth ranger Go-On Gold (whose Engine is a chicken/helicopter) to be called Chicken Ranger. Now seeing this art work, you start thinking why did people wonder why this wouldn't fit with Power Rangers. I like that in the back view of the toy has the yellow Engine there, the Yellow beast or Ranger were not shown at all in the art work of Jungle Fury. Anyhoo, these bikes look great, fortunately we won't be having 'new' rangers this year.

Mommy! I want a Power Ranger Cake

Parents usually have big problems distinguishing one Power Ranger from another. They just see colors, boots and visors. So when their children ask for a birthday cake, interesting thing come up.

Some put the toys on the cake. [This is the Power Rangers in Space]

Some actually attempt to draw them, this one is really accurate. [SPD Blue]

Some get it really wrong.

This one is pretty accurate and ambitious. [MMPR]

This one is awesome! [Turbo]

Some get really strange. Why are these guys sitting down like they are having tea?
And these guys are kneeling. [MMPR?]

Some give up and put a photograph on top. [Dino Thunder]

There was this mold made back in the day of MMPR, they stop making these molds.

And it doesn't stop some people to make some updates. [SPD]

This one is good. At least it includes the whole team. [SPD]

[SPD]

[Ninja Storm]

I like this one the most. [Dino Thunder]

Bat Ranger Halloween Costume??!!!

I go to the Disney store online website and I am surprised to find to my surprise a Bat Ranger mask and not only that...

A costume! I was hoping the Disney Store would make a Wolf Ranger costume like the Yellow Wind Ranger, but purple has been shafted. I had a feeling they would do a Spirit Ranger, I was hoping they wouldn't pick one, in place of the Wolf Ranger. If they did the Wolf Ranger and Bat Ranger, I'd been fine. Halloween is a month away, so I am hoping they surprise me. For SPD, they did two exclusives: pink and shadow. For Mystic Force, they did blue. But, who knows. This costume is $39.50 and the mask is $9.50, which is an outrage because the regular Halloween costumes are a little cheaper. The regular you can get for $20 and the muscle costumes at $36 with mask. Funny enough the costume doesn't look like the toy or the suit on the show, it is in opposite color. Maybe the cost is in that it is... did I forget to mention the costume is 'Glow in the Dark'???!

The reason I believe the Bat Ranger was selected was because he is the one in most of the PRJF clothes at Disney. If it is glow in the dark, it would make more sense if the majority was in white like the one on the show. I guess there wasn't much communication between one company to another ad that is the majority of the problem of what happens with Power Ranger merchandise. Also, some little voice in me is telling me the reason it is majorly black is because of Batman.. maybe they wanted a combo to sell into the popularity of Batman.

What Would a Power Rangers attraction look like?

Since 2005, Power Rangers have been part of Disney Stars and Motor Cars parade at the Disney Hollywood Studios in Orlando. This has been very popular with kids. There is always long lines and according to people that have gone, at best your kid can see up 4 of the seven rangers that are there, if you are lucky and get there early. I have covered this before, but I am wondering if they are ever going to make a bigger attraction. There was a rumor that they wanted to use the building for Who Wants to Be A Millionaire but fans of the attractions were against it. Disney fans don't like the Power Rangers, one idiot called it "Voltron wannabe" without knowing Super Sentai came out before Voltron. Anyhoo, I think what would work would be something similar to what they do in Japan.

In Japan, mostly all around the year they have a stageshow at Tokyo Dome City with the current team. The stageshow entails a story, pyrotechnics, and suit work. When the yearly series ends, they have the real cast (Gekiranger cast above with Go-onger behind them) on stage one day only as a farewell. At the convention expositions, they have a stageshow with past Sentai heroes, even other Toei tokusatsu heroes. I think since the Disney theme park Power Rangers perform anyway, well for a short time, the Japanese stage shows usually last thirty minutes or so. The old Ninja Turtle stageshow at the old MGM Studios park was about ten minutes long.

In the Japanese stageshows, the heroes fight watered-down versions of the monsters, so perhaps they may have to do that. I have never seen a PR monster in any meet-and-greet event or anything. The closet thing to a PR stageshow is what they currently have. I don't think it would be much for Disney to do a stageshow with an outdoors arena. A ride would be a cool idea, but it is highly unlikely. They didn't even do a ride for the Turtles. At best, it would probably be like Toy Story or Buzz Lightyear rides, that the audience would have to 'zap' stuff with 'lasers.' A history hall would be nice, like that have at the official Bandai Japan headquarters.

They do in fact have the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the Movie Red Ranger suit in the Planet Hollywood Store on Sunset Boulevard. I heard they also have the Yellow Ranger suit.

While the villain's costume from the movie, Ivan Oooze, at Planet Hollywood restaurant in Downtown Disney. I am surprised it is there. It is not a great pic but some sort of proof.

The other closest thing to have a 'history hall' for Power Rangers is the helmets at Power Rangers Bandai tour they had recently to promote the Operation Overdrive Mission Helmet.

This is the current map of Disney Hollywood Studios. Click on the image, the red line in the middle is the parade route of the Stars and Motor Cars parade. Number 6 in the yellow area is where the Muppets are, behind it is where the Ninja Turtles used to be. Number 10 in the purple area is where the Millionaire attraction used to be, now it is the Prince Caspian attraction. This is Disney World, the Power Rangers have yet to appear in Disneyland.
