The Power Ranger Series That Never Was

Since Power Rangers moved to New Zealand, it has been closer to Japan and this has helped with getting more props and sets from Sentai to Power Rangers. For Toei's Magiranger (2005) and Gekiranger (2007), some footage was shot in New Zealand. Normally a Sentai Series is shot one year and then adapted as Power Rangers the next year. When Super Sentai footage was shot in New Zealand, it sprung up rumors that the same elements (theme, costumes, props, robots) would simultaneously be shown in Japan and America at the same time in 2007 instead of waiting a year. It was a plan being worked out by Toei and Disney. It was a dream to have both series working simultaneously. So for example, it is if SPD and Dekaranger were made and aired the same year.

Meaning, the same theme would be on the same year, two different series, one Super Sentai and the other Power Rangers. This would have been done in order to make it smoother Power Rangers season and for Disney to be control. Allegedly according to one of my sources and I don't fully believe it, the series was to have an underwater theme and the title was allegedly “Power Rangers Atlantis,” based on the Altantis mythology. The Rangers were going to be have ‘sea friends’ and their base of operations was going to be in Atlantis. There was to be a scientist for comic relief. They were going to ride stingrays, have a mermaid friend and an Orange Ranger based on an octopus.

This is not my fabrication because I have would come up with something better. I don't like the idea of an Orange Ranger in a Sea-based series. Maybe if it wasn't going to be for the same year, or a reverse of what has been going on for 17 years, a Power Rangers series that became a Super Sentai series. This was Disney's plan but eventually they dropped it. One reason could be that is was dropped is that Disney didn’t want to produce essentially an entire Toei series. I got this rumor in 2006, meaning this came before thoughts of an Animated series. I thought it would be interesting to finally put this out there in the ether since this most likely won't happen, and that MMPR is being re-aired in 2010 and there will be no original series for 2010. I always wanted a sea-based series, and it would have been interesting.

Fans think the reason Toei has never done a sea-based series is because it would probably cost way too much to produce. But apparently Disney had high hopes in doing it (due to the high concept) and making their own series. So if this rumor is true, then Disney did think of making of their own series without Sentai footage and the deal was to give the footage to Toei, as a trade-off but like I stated before, Disney probably didn’t want to produce a whole Toei series and the costs would have been enormous. Disney has cut the budget of Power Rangers now because costs were too high and they have Sentai footage, imagine how big the budget would be without Sentai footage. This whole rumor sounds a bit believable because Disney does want to be in control and this sounded like a compromise to Disney wanting control but I guess it wasn't cost effective. But, times changed.

Candy Toys

For the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider Candy Toys, candies don't have to be included. They are mostly miniature versions of the mecha, heroes and other things from the series. I think this is a handy way so fans who can not afford the big robos can have them. The best part is that with the Sentai robos, you can combine them. And unlike other Japanese small toys, you know what you are getting from the cover front.

Power Rangers..... Wha?

I love how my friends who aren't really into Power Rangers but seen a couple of seasons or episodes, get the names wrong. And we fans never manage to get them wrong, sometimes confused but never like they have stated below....

Power Rangers Dragon Force
To the casual observer, this could be either Mystic Force or Dino Thunder.

Power Rangers Galaxy Quest
Clearly my friend got confused with Lost Galaxy and the movie spoof starring Tim Allen.

Power Rangers Wild Fury
My friend (who said 'Dragon Force') got confused with Jungle Fury and Wild Force.

Power Rangers: The O.C.
This really wasn't a confusion but my friend (who called Lost Galaxy 'Galaxy Quest') was joking that SPD cast looked so good, they could have been on 'the O.C.'

The Future of the Power Rangers #4: Speculations and Jumping the Gun

Now that it has been revealed that re-runs of the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is being re-aired on ABC and that Bandai America is producing new toys based on them, fans have been going nuts. Some are happy about the new toys. Some can't stop thinking about the future, and speculating. Many fans still wonder if there will be another season. Others really want Shinkenger to be adapted. Some think MMPR is being re-made but it is not. The truth is we don't really know what is going to happen. But what is happening is that MMPR the TV series is not being 're-made,' only the toys are. It is possible the franchise is taking a break and we will get a new season in the future. Since most of the crew wrapped up in New Zealand, it most likely they might start production in another country, most likely according to rumors--it will be Canada or they might start all over again in New Zealand.

MYTH: MMPR will be remade.
TRUTH: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers repeats will air in January 2010. And a new toy line will be released this winter of 2009. There will be no remake of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV Series so far.

SPECULATIONS:
My speculation is that the Power Rangers will remain at the Disney Hollywood Studios at Disneyworld, and we will get the MMPR Red Ranger to replace the SPD Red Ranger. That sounds like the most reasonable solution. I am sure Disney will like showing off the original Red Ranger and it will get lots of attention.

Why doesn't Disney make their own Power Rangers without Super Sentai footage?
T.K. brought up this question and my theory is because of costs. Disney cut the budget to JF and RPM, even with existing footage, the shows cost money. Bandai America supplied the money for Battlizers, bikes and the Spirit Rangers but with low sales of toys, they couldn't do it anymore. Disney wanted to cut Toei and Bandai out of the equation to get more money, but since they can't afford going solo (Imagine, if Disney thinks the budget is big already with the help of the Sentai footage---without it, the budget would be even larger), they wanted to go animated and Toei didn't approve. But if they did make the effort of doing their own Power Rangers, they would have to rely on Plex and Bandai to design the toys and everything and Disney rather do it all their own and Toei won't let that happen, depending on the situation.

POSSIBLE SCENARIOS
These are some possible scenarios, just speculations to what will happen to the future of the Power Rangers.

2011:
  • Either Season 2 of MMPR gets repeated
  • We get a new season, adapted from Shinkenger (2009)
  • We get a new season, adapted from Goseiger (2010 Sentai)
2012:
  • Either Season 3 of MMPR gets repeated
  • We get a new season, adapted from Shinkenger
  • We get a new season, adapted from Goseiger or 2011 Sentai
2013:
  • Either we get a new season, adapted from Shinkenger
  • We get a new season, adapted from Goseiger
  • We get a new season, adapted from Gokaiger
  • We get a new season, adapted from Goseiger
  • We get nothing.

UPDATED 10/7/09 5pm EST
Please stop asking why Shinkenger is not being adapted. We don't know for sure but I theorize that even if it was Boukenger or Dekaranger, Shinkenger was just a 'victim' this year to not be adapted. Who knows, it might be adapted. Shinkenger is not that hard to adapt, they can say the Kanji are just made-up symbols and look at Ninja Storm. Disney just decided to take a break and concentrate on MMPR.

Kamen Rider Dragon Knight and Power Rangers RPM: Dark Themes for Dark Times

I think it is a coincidence that both Kamen Rider Dragon Knight and Power Rangers RPM have dark themes and are so serious. I think Children's programming with serious themes are great, because kids get more than we believe. Growing up, I loved shows like X-Men (1993), Roughnecks: Starship Troopers (1997), Jem (1984)--rehab for an injury anyone?, etc. Anyhoo, tough times and war time does translate into film/television/etc. Art imitating life. Power Rangers RPM gives us a post-apocalyptic world, which is not the first time it has happened.

Sonic the Hedgehog (known as SonicSatAM to fans) in 1993 dealt with rebels against the ruler of the world--Robotnik , Spider-Man Unlimited (1999) dealt with a world taken over by evil, Beast Machines (1999) with the same theme and She-Ra also dealt with rebels against evil hierarchy, but not exactly an Apocalypse but it was the end of peace. Kamen Rider Dragon Knight gives us some real world themes like a marine eager to save his country towards a threat, imprisonment, comas, etc. The one most apparent thing both series have in common is humans held prisoner and used for slave labor. One of the differences is that Dragon Knight is rather close to its original counterpart Ryuki, while RPM goes far from its counterpart Go-Onger.

Power Rangers RPM
A new computer virus known as the Venjix Virus had infected all the computer systems and had taken over the world's communication, power and defense systems. It was created and sent out by a teenage phenom forced to work practically her whole life, so to make up for it, she helps fight against Venjix with her own Power Rangers. Her only friends ever were twin prototype testers she believed where dead and after that, she swore not to get close to anyone else again and didn't call the Rangers by their real names. The dome city of Corinth was created as a safe haven by the military. There are humans are put into slavery and are held imprisonment. Also there are humans that are experimented on and created into cyborg 'hybrids' like Dillon.

Kamen Rider Dragon Knight
Ventara is the Earth's parallel dimension, a world destroyed by the evil alien Xaviax. The Ventara Kamen Riders fought Xaviax. Unfortunately, Xaviax stole the Advent Decks and defeated all the Riders but one, Len. Xaviax tricked mirror doubles of the original Riders to vent Len. After his dad's mysterious disappearance, Kit becomes Kamen Rider Dragon Knight. He joins forces with Len to vent the Kamen Riders, sending them to the Advent Void, in which there is no way of returning from. Xaviax searches for the best DNA in humans in order to use them for slave labor, he plans to use his mass teleporter to teleport them all to his home planet.

Similar plots to past seasons or other American Tokusatsu series
Some fans complain that there have been some similar plots from past seasons or other shows in these two shows. It is bound to happen. Just like the dinosaur theme or vehicle theme has been repeated in Power Rangers. It's common. Here are a some.

Dillon and Tenaya / Andros and Astronema
In Power Rangers in Space (1998), the Red Ranger Andros searched for his sister he lost as a child. She was kidnapped by a villain--Darkonda. His sister Karone turned out to be the main villainess Astronema, discovered through a locket by the middle of the season. In RPM, Dillon doesn't remember his past and carries around a musical locket and when he hears the twins whistling the same tune, he finds out they knew a girl who whistled it and said it came from her brother's locket, so he deduce he has a sister. He later finds a second key and unites it with his and hears the tune Tenaya whistles, making him believe they are siblings. Tenaya finds out it is true. Karone joins forces with the Rangers and then was brainwashed into an evil cyborg with short red hair. Andros had to fight her against his wishes, she got hurt but she thankfully became good.

Tenaya helped the Rangers and got kidnapped by a villain--Kilobyte and was re-programmed into Tenaya 15. So yeah, they are similar and very much alike, but Dillon is very different in personality to Andros. And Karone was raised to be evil (for like more than a decade) and wasn't a cyborg until she was brainwashed. Tenaya was brainwashed and reprogrammed into a cyborg, making her believe she was a robot within the span of a year or so. The differences between Tenaya and Astronema was that Tenaya became evil when she was older and had cyborg implants and was once blind. Astronema was kidnapped as a child, became a cyborg when brainwashed at the end and wasn't ever blind. Plus, Astronema was real close to Ecliptor but Tenaya has no real 'father-figure' unless you count Venjix but Venjix doesn't care for Tenaya and Ecliptor did genuinely care for Astronema.

Kit and Frank Taylor / Ryan and Tyler Steele
The similarity between Kamen Rider Dragon Knight has with Saban's VR Troopers (1994-1996) was that both protagonists were in search of their fathers. Differences are these: Tyler Steele helped designed the technology that led to discovering the villain and his dimension. Frank Taylor was just a pawn in Xaviax's plan. Tyler was turned into a villain robot named Darkheart and then turned good again by his son. Frank's image was used to manipulate Kit, Frank was put in a comatose state and used as a pawn. Ryan and Kit are also different in resolve. Frank is just a mechanic and Tyler was a sophistic scientist, who created the VR Trooper armor and technology.

Other little RPM similarities
- Everyone loves to point out that Venjix is the second time the name has been used in Power Rangers. That in the episode "Forever Red," General Venjix was a Machine Empire villain.
- Dome city of Corinth is similar to the domed parts of Terra Venture, the space station in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, also with an artificial environment.
- Yes, all the vehicles are similar to those in Turbo, not exactly the same but similar.

Similarities with RPM to Kamen Rider Dragon Knight
- Like I mentioned before, the use of humanity as slave labor. Xaviax wants humans with the best DNA to re-build his home planet. Venjix uses humans as slave labor to build his machines and also uses them as guinea pigs to create cyborg hybrids.
- Arguing and conflict between warriors, well done much more in KRDK.
- The term 'robot' used incorrectly. Lacey calls the Riders 'robots' to Michelle Walsh. And Tenaya believed she was a robot, which was not a mistake on her part but was what she was led to believe.
- Memories erased. Dillon and Tenaya got their memories erased. Frank Taylor got his memories lost.
- Involvement with the government. RPM works right under the government. Dr. K, Gem, and Gema were part of a corrupt branch of the government. A corrupt branch of the government went after Kit Taylor.

Flashbacks
Another thing the two series have in common is flashbacks. When each show started (in early episodes), a flashback would be shown to introduce a character or explain how the character got into the situation to have superpowers. For the Power Rangers RPM, it was one episode after another, starting with Ranger Green and ending with Doctor K. In Dragon Knight, it started a bit with Dragon Knight but more so with Incisor and every other Kamen Rider to come in, ending (so far) with Chris/Sting. We might get more flashbacks later but most likely we won't be getting any more with RPM. We did get some small glimpses of flashbacks with Tenaya and Dillon but it didn't take up the whole episode.

2010 Super Sentai Rumors and Speculations #3

Dukemon says:
A heap of rumor updates suggests that a 6th ranger (Black) will be the one who will have the cobra motif. Sort of makes sense, seeing as how there are supposed to be a bunch of evil "rangers." A cobra makes a great make, but it makes an even better mecha for an antihero." Kamen Rider Ohja/Strike anyone?

New Rumors 10/25/09:
  • GoseiBlack starts out as Red's rival.
  • The 5 Goseiger and GoseiBlack have a similar Henshin Device.
  • GoseiBlack's weapon is called the "Viper Bute", a whip and sword.
  • The 5 Goseiger's monster beasts combine to form "GoseiOh."
  • GoseiBlack's robo, AnkokuOh, is formed from the Black Cobra Monster and a Navy Blue Wild Boar Monster. The Cobra becomes the upper-body and head, while the Boar becomes the back and lower body. AnkokuOh is said to resemble SaiDaiOh.
  • GoseiOh and Black's Cobra Monster can unite, with the Viper switching out for GoseiOh's right arm.

"The rumor says that the rangers beasts will be called the "Tensou Beasts", and of course, their cards are the "Tensou Beast Cards."

Here is the rumored list of our core rangers' beasts:

Red- Tensou HotDragon (Dragon)

Blue- Tensou IceHorse (Horse, according to rumors, a unicorn)

Yellow - Tensou ShiningHeron (Heron, matching the rumors of a bird)

Green - Tensou GardenGiraffe (Kirin)

Pink - Tensou SuperFox (Fennec Fox)

Power Rangers RPM - Monsters yet to be used and won't be used

Four episodes are left to air for Power Rangers RPM and we won't see them until December but I love to speculate. I was concerned when the show started about the bots, as I remember many non-robot-looking foes, and that the RPM crew would overuse the monsters (having too many in one episode) and then running out of them but they have done a good job at spreading them out. They have used two per episode at times but it's been good.

Most Likely Will Be Used
Chirakasonne
He appears in episode 47 of Go-Onger and only seen for one episode, maybe he will be used as Kireizky has been used for Kilobyte and
Yogoshimacritein is being used as Venjix. Maybe as just an Attack Bot.

Kettei Banki
A robot made out of many of the robots, only appeared in 48, most likely will be used for the end.

Bin Banki
Appeared in Episode 42 of Go-onger, since footage for 43 and 44 have already been used for episode 28 of RPM, maybe he will just appear among a bunch of robots and maybe his megazord footage will not be used.

Maybe Won't Be Used
Prince Nigorl zo Arelunbra
Appeared in Episode 26 of Go-Onger, I think he was not used because he is looks less like a robot and has a different ascetic (look) than the others. The bot that looked like a knight in "Not So Simple" (21 of RPM) was connected to this prince, but his footage was pretty much short.

Engine Banki
Appeared in Episode 37, he has been skipped over, he was a transforming robot. Maybe because he is too garish is why he has not been used. Maybe he might appear in the background.

Definitely Won't Be Used
Shower Banki
Definitely will not be used because there are shower valves on her chest that resemble nipples. She appeared in Go-onger episode 38, Yellow and Silver fought her, the plot point inspired the RPM episode 22 "Dome Dolls."

Yatai Banki
Appeared in episode 39, most likely he won't be used, he is way too out of the spectrum of the Attack Bots used.

Baaki
There were a couple of 'organic' monsters in Go-Onger that came from other dimensions and don't match at all with the RPM Attack Bots. Baaki appeared in Episode 24 of Go-Onger and his footage was skipped.

Gokugokumaru and Rairaiken
Repaints of a Go-Onger movie monster, they appeared in episodes 39-40, they definitely won't be used.

Rombiako
Appeared in Episode 31, he was the reason the girls united with the villianess Kegaleshia to form G-3 Princess. He wasn't used for obvious reasons.

Wameikle
Appears in Episode 41, for sure will not be used.

Power Rangers RPM - Episode 28 - Run Ziggy Run

Episode Summary:
Tenaya 15 gets a new card on the opening, I didn't think they would change the opening, so I didn't record it---I was loading in a new disc. It's not much, its just her (with the cyborg stuff on her face) and it says 'as Tenaya 15' instead of Tenaya 7.

Ziggy is alone and finds a penny, saying it is his lucky day. He spots thugs and starts running from them. They try to fight but he avoids them in a rhythmic coordination. He then disappears. Dr. K is working on a new weapon and he teleports as Ranger Green in her chair and she accidentally sits on his lap! Tenaya looks at guards guarding a gate. Back at the evil lair, Venjix meets his new body that looks like Shifter, it is black. Venjix uploads into it, rather quickly, with no explanation on how. Tenaya comes in and says this mission will be difficult and bows to him.

Ziggy explains to the gang that he owes them, saying there is a mix up with numbers and hijacking the truck... $5 million. He says he is a ghost. Summer says ghosting him doesn't make sense. Frenso Bob tells his goons to 'ghost him.' Tenaya comes in, the guards hand her and Bob tells them to let him go. She asks if he controls the truck drivers, she says she has a job for him, giving him Ziggy in return. Ziggy panhandles to Flynn with a can saying 'save Ziggy,' the twins give him rocks and buttons. Kilobyte attacks the city and confronted by the seven. Dillon fights him and goes down. He goes towards Ziggy, he cowards and Kilobyte grabs him.

After the break, the Rangers regather. Kilobyte says its boring. The six morph. Kilobyte drops ZIgy and fights Blue, drops him, fights Yellow and Black and drops Yellow. Black and Red go after him and he kicks down Black. He fights the twins and brings Silver down. Ziggy morphs. Red and Green fight him and they both go down. The truck goes up to the gate. It is a pick up for Truman. The driver gives them a paper clipboard, they say its digital now, he says if they want to call Truman an old man and they let him in. The Rangers go down to Kilobyte's finisher. They de-morph. He leaves laughing. Tenaya grabs Ziggy and covers his mouth. The others realize he is gone.

3 Grinders take Ziggy in and he says his family is high-strung. He says he is not scared of her or Venjix. She says she is taking him to Bob. K says Green's signal is out, Black says she is as bad as the machines. Scott says he is sending the twins to her. K widens the search for Green. Bob gets the package and it glows red and he laughs. The Grinders puts the bombs in place all over the city like light bulbs. Ziggy tries to convince Tenaya against turning him in. A black limo arrives and Bob comes out. The twins and K work on the new weapon. She tells Red of a breach in the system. They are to make the exchange, Ziggy for the case. The case is given to a Grinder, Tenaya opens it.

After the break, Kilobyte faces the four Rangers left. He takes them all down. Bob wants Ziggy, Tenaya brings her gun up, saying he is valuable to them. Ziggy fights the Grinders and Tenaya and gets his morpher back, he morphs and tells the gangsters to run. The Rail Saber is finished. Dr. K detects Green. She tells Gema to help "Zig-- Ranger Green." The gangsters leave in the limo. Tenaya fights Green. Gold arrives with the Rail Saber to save the four. Gold loads the cells 11 and 12 (T-rex and Triceratops) into the saber and fights Kilobyte. Kilobyte goes down. Green and Ziggy fight. Silver flies in, literally and they both fight Tenaya. Gold gives the saber to Red, he puts the mamoth cell into his gun and makes the Rail Blaster by combining the two and take down Kilobyte. Kilobyte says begin the download and becomes big.

PaleoMax is formed and the other zords attack Kilobyte. Silver and Green fight Tenaya but go down. Tenaya picks them both up and drops them down. The Grinder and Tenaya leave. ValveMax is formed with Gold zord as an arm and HighOctane fights Kilobyte. K has detected charges around the city. The Grinders are about to detonate it when Mach Megazord arrives with Ziggy's zord as an arm. Road Attack Zord is deployed. The five robots kick Kilobyte down. Kilobyte attacks them and out of the blaze, the 12 zords comes towards him and form the Ultrazord. They destroy him, he says it isn't over yet.

Back at the evil lair, Kilobyte comes in damaged and moaning. Tenaya brings in the case. Venjix says the final strike is coming up. Back at the garage, Ziggy is packing and moving out, scared. The others try to convince not to leave. Fresno Bob comes in and his men grab Ziggy. He says when he saved his life, he figured he is 'all right' and they are now even. Ziggy is thrilled. He calls him 'bobarino' and Bob tells him not to push his luck.

Review:
Tenaya 15 doesn't have the 'moxie' she used to have. Even though Astronema was brainwashed and evil, she still had a unique personality. The robotic-like Tenaya is listless. I didn't like how the zord battle was reduced to a few minutes because with the unique zord combos, it was kinda too fast to get. Footage of Episode 44 of Go-Onger was used, meaning they only got footage to six episodes left and there is only 4 episodes left. I think this episode was made to wrap things up with Frenso Bob and the cartel since there are only 4 eps left. No new episodes next week, just re-runs. ABC schedule says Episode 29 will air in December. No episode titles or descriptions have been revealed as of yet. Did I mention, there are only 4 more eps left?
