Pretty Cure Magical Girl Series

I cover Tokusatsu, but 'Henshin' also has to do with transformations and technically what follows is a Sentai and done by Toei. I am always interesting in Heronies. For those who don't know, 'Magical Girl' is a genre of Anime and Manga. 'Magical Girl' is about a little girl or teenage girl with some magical friend and magical powers. Sailor Moon changed it by having them fight evil. Some still don't fight evil. But here is a franchise called Pretty Cure and the reason I bring it up is because it usually runs after Kamen Rider on TV Asahi.

 Futari wa Pretty Cure (2004-2005)
Futari wa Pretty Cure (Together, We are Pretty Cure) was created by Izumi Todo. The original Pretty Cure series, directed by Daisuke Nishio aired on TV Asahi between February 1, 2004 and January 30, 2005. It is the only Pretty Cure series to date to have received an English language version, which aired in Canada from March 2009. It revolved around two girls, Nagisa Misumi and Honoka Yukishiro, who encounter the Mipple and Mepple, who give them the powers to the fight the Dark Zone: a dimension of evil that has encroached on the Garden of Light and want to do the same to Earth. The initial run of the series has Cure White and Cure Black searching for the Prism Stones, and they place them in a heart-shaped device known as the Prism Hopish. Later in the series, Porun, the Prince of the Garden of Light, grants the Pretty Cure duo use of their Rainbow Bracelets as they defeat the Dark King. The heronies used the color schemes of Black and Pink; and White and Blue. It aired alongside of Dekaranger and Kamen Rider Blade.

Pretty Cure Max Heart (2005-2006)
Pretty Cure Max Heart continues the story when Nagisa and Honoka meet the mysterious Hikari Kujou, revealed to be the "Life" of the Queen with no memory of her life before and powers scattered in the form of the "Heartiel." But as the Pretty Cure duo attempt to find the Heartiel, remnants of the Dark Zone are protecting a mysterious boy suspected to be the "Life" of the Dark King. Cure Black and Cure White fight back these new enemies with Hikari backing them up as Shiny Luminous. It introduces Shiny Luminous/ "Life of the Queen" in human form after the Queen got split apart following her last encounter with the Dark King. Going under the guise of Akane's cousin and working at her takoyaki stand, Hikari enrols into Nagisa and Honoka's middle school two years under them and becomes friends with them. She had a color scheme of Pink and White. Aired alongside of Magiranger and Kamen Rider Hibiki.

Pretty Cure Splash Star (2006-2007)
Saki Hyuuga and Mai Mishou met after they followed glowing balls that flew towards the Sky Tree,  situated on top of a mountain in their town. 5 years later, they met again at the same place and became the new legendary warriors PreCure. Spirits from the Land of Fountains, revealed they chose to protect the Fountain of Sun hidden in Earth. Later they are upgraded from Cure Bloom and cure Egret to Cure Bright and Cure Windy with help from two additional spirits. The villains of this series are the Dark Fall, who are searching for the Fountain of Sun, the last of the seven fountains that feed the source of all life forms for all worlds. Their color schemes are unique as they are not the traditional primary colors. It aired alongside of Boukenger and Kamen Rider Kabuto.

Yes! Pretty Cure 5 (2007-2008)
Nozomi Yumehara finds a magical book and a creature from the Palmier Kingdom. Nozomi decides to help restore his world, which has been destroyed by the Nightmare, by completing the book and finding the 55 Pinkies to make any wish come true. S, she proves she has the heart to be a Pretty Cure and is given her Pinky Catch from a pink butterfly letting her transform into Cure Dream. Meanwhile, the Nightmares are fighting the cures to steal the Dream Collet and defeat Pretty Cure. To help, she chooses a team of four other students. Together with Cure Rouge, Cure Lemonade, Cure Mint and Cure Aqua, they form the Pretty Cure Team. The series has made use of butterflies as the main theme, also to the extent that the girls transform with the phrase "Pretty Cure, Metamorphose!"; which refers back to the butterfly theme. This is the first team of Pretty Cure that is of five and they have the basic Sentai colors. It aired alongside Gekiranger and Kamen Rider Den-O.

Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo! (2008-2009)
In the direct sequel series, the Cure Rose Garden has always been concealed from human eye. However Eternal, an art organization known for amassing treasure and artwork from many worlds, is trying to get to the garden. They first invade the Palmier Kingdom and four other kingdoms. Flora senses the approaching danger and sends a letter to Nozomi and the Pretty Cure 5. Their new mission is to find the four rulers that have fled from their kingdoms since they hold the Rose Garden Keys. To perform this mission, Nozomi and the others regain their ability to transform into PreCure Five. It aired alongside of Go-Onger and Kamen Rider Kiva.

Fresh Pretty Cure (2009-2010)

This is the first Pretty Cure series to cater in outside the target audiences' age demographic extending beyond young girls. It's also the first to feature more mature-looking characters and Cure costumes which resemble fashionable outfits. All subsequent seasons have followed thus, with due emphasis always paid to costume design. The series's main themes involve traditional playing card suits, as well as fruits and clovers; these symbols and objects are strongly associated with the cures, magical devices and attacks that the series' characters use. Love Momozono is a 14-year-old student at Yotsuba Junior Highschool that tends to care more for others than for herself. One day she visits a show of the famous dance unit "Trinity" and decides to become a dancer, too. On the same event, subordinates of the Labyrinth Kingdom show up who want to collect the unhappiness of the audience. Love gets the power to change into Cure Peach and fights them. Soon after, she is joined by her good friends Miki (Cure Berry), Inori (Cure Pine) to begin her life to protect all worlds and compete in the dance contest. The Pretty Cures are of Pink, Yellow/Orange, Blue and Black/Scarlet. It aired alongside of Shinkenger, Kamen Rider Decade and Kamen Rider Double.

 HeartCatch Pretty Cure (2010-2011)
The series has two main motifs. One is fashion, which is referenced to Tsubomi joining the fashion club, which is part of the storyline. And second is flowers, which are prominent in the naming of numerous characters and items, as well as in the main storyline. Additionally, most episodes contain at least one reference to the language of flowers. In each person resides a Heart Flower, which is connected to the great Heart Tree that watches over everyone. Protecting this tree are the Heartcatch PreCures, who defend it against the Desert Apostles, who plan to wilt everything and turn the world into a desert. However, when the current PreCure, Cure Moonlight, is defeated in battle and the Heart Tree loses its flowers, she sends two fairies to seek out her replacement. They find Tsubomi Hanasaki, a shy new girl to become Cure Blossom. Joined by her new friend, Erika Kurumi, who becomes Cure Marine, they fight against the Desert Apostles who transform the wilting Heart Flowers inside people into monsters known as Desertarians. By defeating these monsters, they gain Heart Seeds which allow the Heart Tree to become healthier again. There is four Pretty Cures in this series: Pink, Blue, Yellow and Purple. It aired alongside of Goseiger, Kamen Rider Double, and Kamen Rider OOO.

 Suite Pretty Cure♪ (2011-2012)
Produced by Toei Animation, the series is directed by Munehisa Sakai, who directed the One Piece anime series and character designs by Akira Takahashi, who previously worked on Kaidan Restaurant. A manga adaptation is also being serialised in Kodansha's monthly Nakayoshi magazine.  The series theme is music, which are prominent to the names of the Cures and the magical devices they use. In Major Land, a Melody of Happiness is due to be played, spreading happiness throughout the world. However, an evil Mephisto steals the Legendary Score, plotting to turn it into a Melody of Sorrow to spread sadness. Aphrodite, the queen of Major Land, scatters the Notes that make up the Legendary Score into the human world and sends a fairy to Kanon Town in order to recover them. There, she meets two girls, Hibiki Hojo and Kanade Minamino, who are chosen to become the Suite Pretty Cure in order to recover the missing Notes and protect everyone's happiness. The Pretty Cures are Pink, White, Blue and Black. It alongside of Gokaiger, Kamen Rider OOO and Fourze.

Smile Pretty Cure! (2012-Now)
The series is written by Shōji Yonemura, who is best known as the head writer of Glass Fleet and Kamen Rider Kabuto. It started airing in February, alongside Go-Busters and Kamen Rider Fourze and soon Wizard. The kingdom of Märchenland, where various characters from fairy tales reside, is attacked by Pierrot, the emperor of the Bad End Kingdom, who seeks to direct the world towards its worst ending and steals the Cure Decors, which power Royale, Queen of Märchenland. Using the last of her energy, Royale manages to seal Pierrot away. However, his minions seek to revive Pierrot by harnessing the Bad Energy from Earthlings. Royale orders a fairy to search for five legendary warriors, the Pretty Cures. Arriving in the town of Nanairogaoka, she encounters Miyuki Hoshizora, a new transfer student, who soon gains the power to become Cure Happy. Joined by her new friends become Cure Sunny, Cure Peace, Cure March and Cure Beauty respectively. The team colors are Pink, Orange, Green, Yellow and Blue.

Power Rangers: Female Episodes; The Numbers

This came to mind today, as I am obsessed with the heroines in Sentai and Power Rangers. I know they are boy's franchises but I wondered how many episodes got female focus. , I also did a Super Sentai one but couldn't do the whole thing because I have not seen all the seasons. But with PR, the whole PRC episode Guide is almost complete and I've seen almost every episode of Power Rangers.

MMPR First Season
18 of 60 Episodes of the first season were female-focused. Episode 3 and 7 Kimberly and Trini shared. What fans call the 'Girl Power' episode. Trini had 4 episodes to her own: Episodes 4, 9, 11, and 48, while she was somewhat important in "Dark Warrior," "Trouble with Shellshock" and "Food Fight." Kimberly shared 12 & 16 with Billy. Kimberly had 9 to herself (5, 14, 24, 26, 27, 31, 45, 54, and 57). That is like 25%, a quarter.

MMPR Second Season
13 of 52 episodes (25%) were female-focused. Kimberly had 66, 71, 76, 79, 85, 107, 110 and 111 to herself, but 71, 79, and 110 she shared with Tommy. "Forever Friends" she shared with Aisha. Trini had "Welcome to Venus Island" and Aisha had "Where there's Smoke, There's Fire." "Storybook Rangers" featured Kimberly and she was important in "White Light." Aisha was important in "The Power Transfer," "The Ninja Encounter" and "Goldar's Vice Versa."

MMPR Third Season
18 episodes of 42 episodes (42%--almost 50%) had females in the primary. Kimberly was important in one part of "A Friend of Need," she had 9 episodes: A Brush With Destiny, Changing of the Zords, Follow that Cab! and A Different Shade of Pink saga. Kimberly and Aisha sort of shared "A Ranger Catastrophe" 2 parter with Katherine. Aisha had the 2-part "Stop the Hate Monster" and the 2-part "Hogday Afternoon." Katherine had the "A Ranger Catastrophe" 2 part, A Different Shade of Pink saga, Another Brick on the Wall and Sowing the Seas of Evil. Aisha and Katherine shared "The Sound of Dischordia."

Zeo
10 of 50 episodes featured the girls (20%). Tanya had four episodes and Katherine was involved in 6 episodes, she shared 3 with Tommy (For cryin out loud, There's no business saga, and A Small Problem). Tanya was sort of important in Episode "Game of Honor" and Katherine was in Hawaii Zeo and the rest of There's No Business like Snow Business 3-parter.

Turbo
9 of 45 Episodes (17%). Katherine had 2: "Weight and See" & 'Cars Attacks', Tanya had "Transmission Impossible," Ashley had 2 episodes and Cassie had 2 episodes. Cassie and Ashley shared "The Rival Rangers." Cassie had focus in the Phantom Ranger episodes as well. Katherine was also important in "Passing the Torch."

In Space
6 out of 43 episodes (13%) had females featured. Cassie had 4 episodes (When Push Comes to Shove, A Wasp With a Heart, A Delta Discovery and Silence is Golden), Ashley had 2 episodes (Grandmother Matchmaker and Invasion of Body Switcher) and Ashley was involved in "Red with Envy" but was not in focus. And "A Rift in the Rangers" had both girls. "Always A Chance" involved Cassie a bit.

PRLG
7 of 45 (17%) had female focus. Maya had Kendrix had 2 episodes (Memories of Mirinoi, Loyax' Last Battle), Kendrix had 2 (Double Duty and Power of Pink), Kendrix and Maya shared "Orion Rising," Karone had 2: Protect the Quasar Saber and Facing the Past. The girls were victims in 2: Stone Beauty and Mean Wheels Mantis. The lack of girl episodes could be chalked up to Kendrix actress' sickness. Maya was important in some episodes but had no focus.

PRLR
8 of 40 episodes (15%). Dana had 4: A Matter of Trust, Go Volcanic, The Last Ranger, In The Limelight and Kelsey had 4: The Fifth Crystal, The Great Egg Caper, Riding the Edge and Up To the Challenge. They share no episode together.

PRTF
13 of 40 episodes (32%), Jen had 2 episodes on her own (Jen's revenge, Time Force Traitor), 4 she shared with Wes (Trust and Truimph, Something to Fight For, Ransik Lives, and Undercover Rangers), she was main focus in 2-part opener, and Katie had 3 (Future Unknown, Legend of Clock tower and Full Exposure). Lovestruck Rangers, the girls had to fight the villains, but the episode mostly dealt with the boys but it is the episode where Ransik made fun of "Girl Power." Jen had main focus in "End of Time Part 3." Jen also had some importance in "Quantum Secrets." Jen was the leader but even though being the leader and in charge, I was only counting the episodes that mostly dealt with her. Wes had like 11 episodes were he was in focus (not including the four he shared with Jen) but 7 were solely his--the other 4 he shared with Eric or others. So we can say Wes had 5 more solo episodes than Jen.

PRWF
The Girl Rangers had 6 of 40 in focus (15%). Taylor had 3 episodes (Revenge of Zenaku, Click Click Zoom, and Bear Necessities), and Alyssa had 3 (Father's Footsteps, Ancient Awakening and Battle of Zords). Alyssa did help in Secrets and Lies and Taylor had some focus in other episodes but she was a minor character.

PRNS
Being the only girl, Tori only had 8 episodes of 38 that featured mostly her (21%). 4 Episodes she had to herself (Snip It, Snip It Good, Beauty and the Beach, The Wild Wipeout and Pork Chopped), "Double Edged Blake" and "I Love Lothor", "Nowhere to Grow" and the Thunder Stranger saga has some focus on her.

PRDT
Kira had 5 episodes to herself (Diva in Distress, Missing Bone, Mad Mackerel, A Star is Torn, and A Ranger Exclusive), out of 38 (13%), but had some focus in White Thunder saga.

SPD
6 of 38 had female focus (15%). Syd had 3: Dogged, Zapped, and Stakeout; Z had 2: Sam Part 1 & 2, and Kat had Katastrophe. Z had some focus in Messenger Part 1. I am surprised Z didn't have more focus.

Mystic Force
Girl Rangers got 8 episodes of focus out of 32, females all together got like 11 episodes (25 to 34%). Madison had 3 to herself: Rock Solid (which she kinda shared with Nick), Scaredy Cat and Ranger Down. Vida shared a lot of episodes, like Code Busters, Petrified Xander, Stranger Within Part1-2, Hard Heads and The Return. Clare had Gatekeeper 1 & 2 and Long Ago. Udonna had Light Source Part 2 and Heir Apparent Part 2. The episode they were supposed to have together from Magiranger was not used.

PROO
6 out of 32 episodes had female focus (14%), even though Ronny On Empty Part 1 & 2 had her name, it barely had any character development on her but eh, I'm counting it. Rose had 2 episodes (one she shared with Tyzonn) and Ronny had 4 (2 she shared with Will and 1 she shared with Mac). Ronny was the victim twice.

Jungle Fury
Lily had 6 of 32 episodes in focus (21%), she was lightly spotlighted in Taste of Poison and Dance the Night Away. Her solo eps were Way of the Master, Pushed to the Edge, Bad to the Bone and Fear and the Phantoms. Pizza Slice of Life and Pushed to the Edge had some Camille focus.

RPM
There was like 5 to 6 out of 32 episodes (18%) that had female focus. Summer had Ranger Yellow Part 1/2, Dr. K had Dr. K and shared If Venjix Won with Ziggy, Gema had Not So Simple but she shared it with Flynn. Summer was important in many eps and Gema shared eps with Gem. Summer was important in Brother's Keeper and Belly of the Beast.

Samurai
Won't do the numbers until season ends.

In later seasons, it doesn't matter if there was a duo of females or only one female. There was more female focus in the beginning but probably because there was more episodes, the percentage was about the same. Jen had more focus because she was leader.

Smart Girls, Shy Girls and More

Where do these other girls stack up? Somewhere in the middle, not really feminine or masculine, like I said, they aren't opposites.

Sara/ Yellow Flash - Smart, seen as cold

Kazumi/Five Pink - Brain

Chisato/Mega Yellow - kind-hearted

Urara/MagiBlue - she was feminine but shy too.

Kothoa/Shinken Yellow - sweet, clumsy, shy

Feminine Sentai Heronies

UPDATED 7/31/14
Most of these are pink too.

Peggy/Momo Ranger
As the first female Ranger, she had to hold her own as the only female. She was a spy and would take different disguises. She had to use her femininity, she was feminine but not utterly girly. She was sexy.

Karen Mizuki/Heart Queen
Karen is a skilled martial artist and is proficient in a number of fighting methods. I haven't seen enough of the series, but I think she was feminine and the lone woman.

Diane Martin / Miss America I
An FBI agent who joined the Fever team to avenge her father Bosner, who was slain by Egos. She is armed with throwing knives. She does a disco dance. After she was wounded by the Dracula Monster, she returned to the United States.

Akira Momoi / Denzi Pink
A former tennis player who teaches swimming at the Athletic Club. Quit the team in the first episode rejoined at the end of episode two. She saw her coach burn to death cause of the Vader Clan first attack.

Miki Momozono/GogglePinkSuper feminine. gymnast who works as an announcer at Kourakuen Stadium.

Rei Tachibana/DynaPink
She dreams of inventing a machine in order to understand and communicate with animals. A skilled fencer, Rei dislikes fighting, but fights for the sake of protecting everyone's dream and the safety of the world.

Hikaru/Pink Five
Sweet yet strong, and a mistress of disguise. An unusually strong spirit yet with a strong motherly instinct.

Nagisa/Change Mermaid
Nagisa was previously a task force officer in the Japanese army, sometimes focuses too much on the etiquette of the others. Nagisa has a loving and caring aspect of her seen in animals and had feelings for Tsurugi.

Megumi Misaki/Blue Dolphin
A top class student at Academia. She was taught archery by her dad. She often criticizes Yusuke's strategies. A caring figure, feeling even for her enemies.

Haruna Morikawa/Pink Turbo
A student body president and brightest student in the school. She is popular, everyone looks up to her. Gifted with acting skills, she was able to fool both Violent Demons and the other Turboranger to get the medicine to save Yohei's life.

Kaori - feminine, rich

Mei/Pteraranger
She was feminine, she had be all lady-like and demure, but could kick butt when she had to.

Lin/Houhouranger
Sweet, caring, perceptive, she did bring the feminine flair.

Momo of Ohranger
I heard she was pretty popular, I know Ray--who started and used to own Rangercentral loved her.

Youko/Pink Racer
Super girly and also concerned about her weight.

Miku of Megaranger
I think she was most popular of the both, Chisato sure has her fan base but I think Miku's appeal is her cuteness, her giddiness and sometimes her selfishness. But she always made up for it.

Matsuri Tatsumi / Go Pink
A kind hearted girl, she is a strong fighter who is very agile and quick. She does not take it kindly when others weaker than her are in trouble and her temper can be pretty deadly when the Psyma Clan attack innocent people. At times Matsuri is the one that brings order in the household when her brothers (and father) get out of line.

Sae Taiga / GaoWhite
Teenager, sweet, martial arts student under her father. Everyone takes care of her.

Nanami Nono/Hurricane Blue
Nanami being the sole girl, loved shopping and singing, had to put up with being the only girl. She longed to bond with a girl.

Umeko of Dekaranger
So popular in Japan that the Japanese toy makers even made a chess piece of her in her bathtub with rubber duckies. And as for the Girls in Uniform figures, they made two--one of her in her uniform and one in a bathrobe and rubber ducky.

Houka/Magi Pink
Bubbly and sometimes scatterbrained, she was the epitome of feminine.

Natsuki of Boukenger
She was a light of sunshine in the cast, making them all smile and be fun.

Saki (Go-On Yellow)Very feminine, young but always.... smiled!

Mako (Shinken Pink)Strong but feminine, she dreamed of being a bride, yet they made fun of the fact that she wasn't a great cook.

Eri (Gosei Pink)Feminine.

Ahim (Gokai Pink)
no question.

Kagura (Toqger)
No question as well.
