Ethnicity Articles

updated 2/3/18
The following past posts talk about casts and the diverse ethnicity. The most diverse casts include Time Force, Wild Force and Samurai, the one that is less diverse is Jungle Fury. Jungle Fury only has one Asian of a team of five, while the rest are Caucasian. There has been no female African-American Ranger since Time Force. I think it has to do with the filming in New Zealand which makes it a narrow cast search and also, I think it has to do with the Asian stunt women matching the actresses. Teams that have no had no African-Americans have been Ninja Storm, Jungle Fury and Mystic Force. Teams lead by an African-American are Turbo, SPD and RPM. Casts without Latinos have been Lost Galaxy, Lightspeed Rescue, Time Force, Jungle Fury and RPM. And Sixth Rangers have only been Caucasian, Latino, and Asian. We yet to have African-American Sixth Ranger, an Asian Red Ranger, and African-American Pink Ranger until Shelby of dino charge.

Ethnicities of Actor Vs. Character

UPDATED 9/4/14
This might be wrong and if corrected, will take a while. I decided to compare where the actors were actually from, their ethnicities, compared to what they played on the show.

Here is my insane 'troll logic,' where I put 'white' for short instead of Caucasian. Now, this could also mean other ethnicties other than just 'white' like Italian or German or whatever. AND I know that 'Latino' is white, so for 'White' I mean non-Hispanic. And where you go to New Zealand and Australia, I split the actor up by where they were born and their ethnicity, hence the stars unless other wise indicated, like MMPR or Samurai, where there were different actors.

For example, Antonio of PRS is really Asian/German in real life and not Hispanic. 'Rose' is Filipino-English and Will is black and from England. Gem of RPM is from New Zealand of Asian decent. Flynn of RPM isn't really Scottish, he's from New Zealand. Nick is from Australia but of Iran/Middle Eastern decent. And the list goes on and on. There is plenty of more I missed to mention here but I am tired and I am sure plenty of people will post comments. Also, I put 4 under Zeo for Gold Ranger for Austin St. John and the triplets that played Trey. Oops, I forgot Aquitar, I'll add them later today.

UPDATE
As for Megaforce, the real cast's ethnicities are Red - Spanish/Native-American, Pink - Filipino-American, Blue - African-American/Brazilian, Black/Green - Egyptian-American, Yellow - Caucasian, Silver - Caucasian but their characters are non-specific.

Dino Charge's real cast ethnicities are Red - Latino, Black - New Zealand, Blue - Indonesian, Pink - African-American, Green - Caucasian.

Casts where minorities are majorites

The majority of Power Rangers casts have Caucasians as the majority. But some casts have the majority of another race or ethnicity other than seen as just Caucasians. Granted many of the Caucasian actors have been of mixed ethnicities like German, Italian, Hispanic or anything else, but I'm focusing on non-white. I know race shouldn't be a big deal and that we should look at our similarities more than our differences, but the multi-color cast is a major factor of Power Rangers so I thought a little focus would be interesting.

Time Force
Lucas, Trip and Eric were Asian, granted Trip was a space alien. Kevin Kleinberg (Trip) is half German and half Filipino; Michael Copon is also half German-Filipino, he's dad is Filipino and his mom is German-American; and Daniel Southworth (Eric) is Asian, don't know what exactly. Cole was supposedly Cacuasian but Rickardo Medina is Puerto-Rican/Brazilian American, there was only two 'Caucasian' actors in Wild Force. I consider Time Force the most diverse group and Wild Force being the second.
Samurai
Mike and Antonio are Latino, Steven Skyler (Antonio) is Thai-German. Rick Medina is of Puerto-Rican/Brazlian heritage. Hector David (Mike) is Puerto-Rican-American. Not much of a majority, it's more like an even-match with Jayden and Emily being Caucasian. But the team is the 3rd most diverse group.

Ethnicities of Power Ranger Villains

I was thinking about how Power Rangers supplied a variety of ethnicties through its 17 seasons, something Super Sentai can not do, as it is Japanese and shoots in Japan, but does try to show different skin colors and hair colors. As for Power Rangers, what many American children programs, producers worry about having a certain ethnicity as a villain. Because what other producers would think about would be the negative impact some might construed if the villains were say, African-American or Latino or Middle Eastern. In Power Rangers, no villain has been any of those three ethnicities I just mentioned. I am of course speaking about the villains outside of costumes, so this does not include Lord Zedd, Rito, Master Vile, the Machine Empire and the Mystic Force villains.

Rita Repulsa was the first villain and I think it was just necessity to keep her as a villain because of the footage and budget. So they had no choice but to have an Asian villainess. I say Asian because she is first Japanese but then played by actresses of unknown Asian origins. Vypra and Toxica were Asian, mostly to match with the footage of the Japanese actresses in footage from far away shots. Also, I think that contributed to the history of Rita to have an Asian villain. And no Asian communities have complained about it, that I've known of.

When Power Rangers went to New Zealand, Ninja Storm gave us a taste of the Pacific islands with our first and only Samoan Red Ranger Shane and New Zealander Villain Lothor. Lothor was seen to be Asian in a flashback but was clearly of pacific islander background as an Adult, as the same actor played him and his twin brother Sensei. Marah and Kapri were clearly Australian and white.

Many many villains have been Caucasian, beginning with the fifth season (Turbo) and Divatox. I think it went with that she was an original creation and had no reference Japanese footage. Astronema, Trakeena, and Nadira were American Caucasians. Other than Kapri and Marah, Nadira was the only Caucasian to wear a costume that can from the original Japanese counterpart show. Ransik was the only male Caucasian-American villain. Ilia Volok was the only Russian-born actor on Power Rangers, he played the only Russian character/villain Viktor Adler. As for everyone else, they were from either New Zealand and Australian, but they were also white. Elsa from Dino Thunder seem to be either Filipina or of Pacific Islander. But every thing else was white wash. My point is no Black, Latino or Middle-Eastern villain. Why is this important to me? Because shows shouldn't be scared to have a villain of another race, unless they get really racist and stereotypical. I'm sure not all Space Aliens are Asian or white, I mean, even Star Trek villains have been of other 'ethnicities.'

Power Ranger Ethnicities

UPDATED 9/4/14
Now that Power Rangers is ending, I thought we look through the years and see what ethnicities have been used.
  1. 3 African-American Leaders: TJ (Turbo), Jack (SPD), and Scott (RPM).
  2. Samoan Ranger: Shane (PRNS)
  3. Jewish Power Ranger: Bridge (SPD) --- I know Jeudism is not only a ethnicity but also a religion, culture.
  4. Scottish Power Ranger: Flynn (RPM)
  5. The only Sixth Rangers not to be Caucasian are Eric/Quantum Ranger (PRTF), Cam/Green Samuari Ranger (PRNS) and Gem/Gold and Gema/Silver RPM Rangers.
  6. Caucasians have been every color; African-Americans (16) have been Black [Zack, Will (PROO)], Yellow [Aisha, Tanya (PRZ-PRT), Katie (PRTF)], Red [TJ (PRT), Jack (SPD), Scott (RPM)], Blue [Cestro (Aquitar), TJ (PRiS), Max (PRWF), Ethan (PRDT), Kevin (PRS), Noah (PRM)], Green [Damon (PRLG), Joel (PRLR), A-Squad (SPD)] and Pink (Dino Charge). African-Americans have not been White, Gold, Silver nor a sixth ranger.
  7. Asians (14) have been Yellow [Trini], Black [Adam], Pink [Cassie (PRT-PRiS, SPD A-Squad, Mia (PRS), Emma (PRM)], Blue [Kai (PRLG), Chad (PRLR), Lucas (PRTF), Dax (PROO), Theo (PRJF)], Green [Adam (PRZ-PRT), Trip (PRTF), Cam (PRNS)], Red [Eric (PRTF)], Gold [Gem (RPM)] and Silver [Gema (RPM)]. Even though Eric was Red and Asian, there has been no Asian Red Ranger leader. Asians have not gotten to be a White Ranger.
  8. Latinos (17) have been Red [Rocky, Cole, Charlie (SPD), Troy and Lucas], Blue [Rocky (PRZ), Madison (PRMF)], Black [Carlos (PRiS), Danny (PRWF)], Green [Carlos (PRZ-PRT)], Mike (PRS), Navy [Blake (PRNS)], White [Trent (PRDT), Yellow [Z (SPD)], Pink [Vida (PRMF), Rose (PROO)] and Gold (Antonio (PRS)). And I am talking about the characters, not the actors. Latino characters have gotten to almost every color, except for Silver.
  9. Australians, while many actors have been Australians, only 2 characters have been: Pink [Kat (MMPR-PRT)] and Green [Xander (Mystic)]. Dino Charge Black is the first to be from New Zealand.
  10. Power Rangers have had quite a few aliens. Aliens (16): The Aquitar Rangers, Trey of Triforia (Zeo), Andros (PRiS), Zhane (PRiS), Maya (PRLG), Karone (PRLG), Trip (PRTF), Doggie (PRSPD), Kat (PRSPD), Blue A-Squad, and Tyzonn (PROO).  Orion from Super Megaforce is an alien as well.
Who knows what heritage Alyssa (PRWF) was?
Jessica Rey is Filipino, Angie Diaz (Vida), Rhoda Monymayor (Rose), and Jeffry P. (Trent) were also Filipino. It was never mentioned on the show what Alyssa the character's heritage was. Her father was Native-American, we may never know.
