More on Power Rangers Dino Force Brave

At first I didn't know what to make of this South Korean production but after seeing some footage and the opening sequence, I am impressed. South Korea production company Daewon Animation will produce a 12-episode sequel series to Kyoryuger as Kyoryuger was dubbed as Power Rangers Dino Force. This is the first time South Korea makes their own production. They are not only cast new actors, have new villain suits, shooting new actor scenes, new fight scenes, but also zord battles. What didn't impressed me was re-colored suits and zords. But the opening sequence impressed me at the production value, looking like Sentai. I am not sure if Toei is in charge of the zord battle footage.

Brave Red Dino - Kim Seyong as Juyong Kwon
Brave Black Dino - Hong Sungho as Hyeonjun Jeon
Brave Blue - Oh Sehyun as Dino Sechang Kim
Brave Green Dino - Lee Injun  as Pureun Lee
Brave Pink Dino - Lee Yujin as Dohee Yun
Brave Gold Dino - Lee Seyoung as Juhyeok Kwon

The Stegosaurus now belongs to Black, called Stegotoup with a chainsaw. The Triceratops is now Blue and called Forekkera. The raptor is now pink and called Raptorax. Parasazier is the Parasaurus and green now. Even thought their helmets have not changed.

LAVENDER RANGER'S OPINIONS ARE HIS OWN
It's my own personal opinion but it would've been cool if they did new suits based on the other Zyudenchi (Dino Chargers) like Bandai America did with the zords. For Dino Charge and Dino Supercharge, Bandai America made new molds: Ammonite Zord and Archelon Zord. They also recolored a Raptor as a Oviraptor. Now the reason they probably didn't do this was to cut costs and just re-color existing suits and zords. Also, the Dino Charge franchise is owned by Saban. Daewon probably only licensed Toei and Bandai Japan. But it is curious that Daewon uses the 'Power Rangers' title. But Saban does not exclusively own the name 'Power Rangers' for certain regions. That is why it is labeled as 'Saban's Power Rangers.' Bandai and Toei has Super Sentai toy sales mixed with Power Rangers as 'Power Rangers' for international records. So do we consider this Sentai or Power Rangers? Now some people wonder why Saban hasn't made their own zord footage and it is because it is very expensive. They would have to commission it again like they did for Zyu 2. Saban hasn't done their own Zord footage since Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue. Disney did their own footage for SPD. Anyway I digress.

News this Week: Korean Power Rangers Second Season/GoRider/Krispy Kreme

If you didn't already know, Korea shows dubbed Super Sentai and calls it Power Rangers. Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger just finished as Power Rangers Dino Force in Korea. Because it had success, Korea decided to make its own second season and a new series of stage shows. New suits were made and there will be a power up for Kyoryujin and also a modified Aigaron suit (Wrench). The new season will be 12 episodes and be called "Power Rangers Dino Force Brave." Some sources found Toei shooting new footage in Japan. It will begin to air in April and it is the first time South Korea has new footage. It is created and produced by Daewon Media, who holds the licenses and production franchise in South Korea, who also co-operated with Toei Company.

In Japan, a Kamen Rider special 3-parter will be on Go-Pass, which will have five Kamen Rider-1's in Goranger colors.

Scorpina and King Sphinx will be released from Imaginext soon. Soctpina never got a Bandai figure but will now be getting a Pop Pint Size Heroes.

For a limited time Krispy Kreme will have Power Rangers movie themed donuts. Above box picture is from my nephew who got a box from work.

The Blurry Line Between Super Sentai and Power Rangers

UPDATED 2/27/14 5PM EST
I have been planning this post for a while, since June actually. I know this is a controversial topic. There seems to be a divide between Power Ranger fans and Super Sentai fans. There are indeed fans that like both Power Rangers and Super Sentai but it is a small group. I do know that at least more than half of Power Force know Sentai and like both PR and Sentai, others just know Power Rangers but have no problems with Sentai. When some people mention that Power Rangers and Super Sentai are the same thing, most fans get angry. It can be both sides, the Sentai fan could get insulted or the Power Ranger fan would get insulted. Power Rangers fans mostly like when shows take a departure from the Sentai, hence the dislike of Samurai and consensus of love for RPM and In Space.

But I bring this up because now with Super Megaforce using footage and material from Gokaiger, we are starting to see Super Sentai from before Zyuranger (other wise Pre-Zyu or Pre-MMPR) spill into the US. Jetman Figuarts are starting to be available in the United States. The new Universe of Hope cards (that have been delayed a SECOND time to July 26th) have Goranger and Sun Vulcan characters on it. Also, Dairanger seen in a marketing teaser for Super Megaforce, Ryuuranger (Red) cameos in an early episode of Megaforce, US Ranger Key prototypes at the SDCC made for them and the Super Megaforce Rangers become them in Episode 2 of Season 2. So it's all starting to come together, it is getting harder and harder to tell the difference between them... just kidding. But you know what I mean, they are getting closer and closer after years of being distinctly different. At least visually.

Differences
Obvious differences are that one series is in English set in the United States but the other is in Japanese set in Japan. Where as the majority of Super Sentai members being Japanese (Kyoryu Cyan being White and Houhouranger being half Chinese and other characters like that), Power Rangers usually have diverse groups of different ethnicities (especially with New Zealand and Australian actors). Power Rangers of course have less teams than Power Rangers and Dairanger suits were not used but they did change into them in Super Megaforce. Also, there VRV Master of Carranger upgraded to a Ranger as Phantom Ranger in Power Rangers Turbo. Titanium Ranger, the Spirit Rangers and A-Squad Rangers are exclusive to PR. Also, the Battlizers (save for the SPD one), new cycles and other different items and armors. In Japan, it has been a tradition to have a movie annually of the current series (usually double-billed with a Kamen Rider movie) whereas in the US, the last movie was Turbo. And now Teamups which are annual tradition, are also in theaters. Teamups usually are part of the episode count in Power Rangers, save for "Clash of the Red Rangers" which was a TV Special.

Similarities
Obviously they use the same footage. Basically we are dealing with a team of 3 or 5 young people who transform with either a handheld item or wrist brace (etc.) and fight grunts, then a monster of the day. The monster of the day grows and they enter robots that combine to save the day. And they usually get new members added to the team. Also the rotating actors year by year.

What Power Ranger fans don't like about Sentai
"Too Goofy." This is what I hear often when people who never seen Sentai talk about Sentai. It is the cultural differences. People find it weird. What can be weird? Is it the cross-dressing? Is it the Anime-like visual effects at time (Abaranger, Go-Onger, etc.)? Is it the talking dinos (Abaranger) or talking cars (Go-Onger)? Could it be that the whole cast starts dancing and singing at the ending titles? (Hurricanger, Magiranger, Go-Onger, Kyoryuger, Go-Busters, etc.) But it doesn't happen every year. Or could it be the balloon-monster (Go-Onger) or the cutie monster (Boukenger) or various ridiculous monsters? A lot of people don't understand it if they don't understand the Japanese culture.

What Super Sentai fans don't like about PR
"Too water-down and specifically aimed for children by scared American parents." Super Sentai fans find that Power Rangers has been 'watered down' or a softer simpler version of Sentai. That it is made in fear that kids would imitate violence (hence explosions that appear behind people in the Disney era) and imitate behavior. Also, all the death and consequences are cut out. Many Rangers have died in Sentai, there are characters that are perverts or otherwise, there is guns and real bullets and oh also blood. The above picture from Mystic Force, Necrolai is looking at piles of feathers that used to be the Power Rangers thanks to a MotD, in Magiranger, the monster created a parasite in people's stomachs that killed them.

Power Rangers in South Korea (Super Sentai series under the name)

I covered this before. In South Korea, they aired Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to Wild Force dubbed in Korean. In 2004, they started airing Super Sentai under the Power Ranger title. From Abaranger to Go-Onger, they also packaged American Power Ranger toys with Japanese toys. Now since Saban Brands has been late on adaptions, South Korea only releases the Japanese toys.

Power Rangers Dino Thunder (2004)
Abaranger logo in Korea was a carbon-copy of the American Power Rangers Dino Thunder logo. I must repeat that Abaranger was aired, not Dino Thunder itself.

Power Rangers Special Police Delta (2005)
For Dekaranger, they used the Power Rangers SPD logo, SPD stood for a combination of what it meant for Power Rangers and Dekaranger. Dekaranger was Special Police Dekaranger and SPD in Power Rangers was Space Patrol Delta, so in Korea it was Special Police Delta.

Power Rangers Magic Force (2006)
Magiranger called Power Rangers Magic Force and its logo looked more like the M insignia. In 2011, an online game was created using the characters and the name.

Power Rangers Treasure Force (2007)
Boukenger was renamed Treasure Force in Korea. It was not called Operation Overdrive.

Power Rangers Wild Spirits (2008)
Gekiranger logo used and called called Wild Spirits. (I know, irony since Gaoranger was called Jungle Force instead of Gaoranger and Gekiranger was called Wild Spirit instead of Jungle Fury).

Power Rangers Engine Force (2009)
Go-Onger was released as Power Rangers Engine Force with the Go-Onger logo. Just like in Japan, the Go-Onger vs. Gekiranger movie was released but as Power Rangers.

Power Rangers Jungle Force (2010)
Instead of airing Shinkenger, they skipped it because Shinkenger has too much Japanese infulence and the Koreans hate Japanese. Power Rangers Jungle Force---which is Gaoranger dubbed in Korean. But the toyline is a combination of the Bandai America Power Rangers toyline and the Bandai Japan Super Sentai toyline. Bandai Korea used a different background than Bandai America did, the logo is reminiscent of the Wild Force logo but with the Lion zord more prominent.

  Power Rangers Miracle Force (2011)
Goseiger (2010) was not skip and became Miracle Force, embracing the Angel-motif unlike Power Rangers Megaforce.

Power Rangers Captain Force (2012)
For some odd reason, Gokaiger was called 'Captain Force' instead of Pirates. Maybe because they think the idea of Pirates is too barbaric for children. One thing is the name and the other is the visual. Shinkenger was shown in the series but given another name, Power Rangers Blade Force.

lionel_B  posted the names in the comments of the South Korean version gave to Goranger to Hurricanger. Most of them are carbon copies of the Sentai names except for Hurricanger is given the name Ninja Storm. Kakuranger is Ninja Ranger because Kaku means Hidden or better understood as Ninja. Check the comments of this post.

Power Rangers Go Bursters (2013)
Go-Busters (2012) is now being packaged in South Korea as Power Rangers Go-Bursters.

Bandai Korea's Power Ranger Captain Force Ranger Keys

Korea has Gokaiger as Power Rangers Captain Force. The order of their Ranger Keys are interesting. The one above for #4 is Gosei Red, Tyrannoranger, Hurricane Red, Red Racer and Gokai Green. The only non-Power Ranger keys they seem to have so far are the Gorangers and VulEagle. I mean, they don't edit Gokaiger so it has all the 34 (the ones in Gokaiger of course) teams of Super Sentai. But I am not sure if all Super Sentai has aired in South Korea. But I am sure some of it sure had to. I mean, Sentai has aired in Brazil and France, so they had to have aired in other Asian countries.

Other sets are:
1: Geki Red, Dekared, Magired, Gaored, Vuleagle
2: Go Red, Ryuranger, Abared, Bouken Red, Ginga Red
3: Gorangers: Midoranger, Kiranger, Akaranger, Aoranger, Momoranger
4: Gosei Red, Tyrannoranger, Hurricane Red, Red Racer and Gokai Green
5: MagiShine, DekaBreak, Gokai Anchor, Shurikenger, Shinken Gold

South Korea has Goseiger as 'Power Rangers Miracle Force'

As I've mentioned on this blog before, in South Korea they show the actual Japanese Super Sentai dubbed in Korean and rename it 'Power Rangers.' South Korea will air Tensou Sentai Goseiger as Power Rangers Miracle Force, replacing Power Rangers Jungle Force (Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger) this July. South Korea started dubbing Super Sentai as 'Power Rangers' with Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger in 2005 and aired it as Power Rangers Dino Thunder which continued till Engine Sentai Go-Onger dubbed as Power Rangers Engine Force. Samurai Sentai Shinkenger was skipped due to possible cultural issues and in some extent, South Korea's grudge towards Japan and instead aired Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger as Power Rangers Jungle Force. Power Rangers Miracle Force premieres this July 2011.

Not Power Rangers, Not Super Sentai

Below are various shows I have mentioned before that might have gotten confused for Power Rangers or Super Sentai from time to time.

Squadron Sport Ranger ąø‚ąøšąø§ąø™ąøąø²ąø£ สปอร์ąø•ą¹€ąø£ąø™ą¹€ąøˆąøąø£์ (2006)
It had sixteen episodes in Thailand in 2006 and was the first original tokusatsu from Thailand in a while, but it was first to look the most like Super Sentai. Many fans have asked me to mention this series. Starhunter is an alien tribe that steals all life energy on other planets, gathering the energy through medals. One medal was split into five and when Starhunter came to Earth, the Sport Ranger were formed to fight them. Red, Yellow, Green were male and Pink and Blue were female.

Vectorman (1999) was from South Korea.

鎧ē”²å‹‡å£« is probably translated as Imperial Emperor Brave Knight Armor or Armor Hero Emperor, I am not completely sure about the translation.

Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan (2007 – 2008)
Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan (Zaido: The Space Sheriffs) is a Philippine series by GMA Network. It was meant to be a remake of the Metal Hero Series Uchuu Keiji Shaider.

In the biggest copyright infringement ever, there is a new CGI and 2D animated series from China that is literally a rip-off of Super Sentai.

Power Rangers/Super Sentai combo in Korea

 UPDATED 6/9/13 2:30 PM EST
In Korea, they combine Power Rangers with Super Sentai. They released the two American Power Rangers movies under the name Power Rangers. But lately they have released the Super Sentai movies under the name Power Rangers. Super Sentai series is released in Korea under the name Power Rangers. The toyline by Bandai Korea is a combination of Power Rangers toys and Super Sentai toys. I am not sure but I believe the toylines and series are released two years after the Super Sentai series.

Mr. Yellow and James Spiring helped me out MMPR to Wild Force of Power Rangers were dubbed in Korean. Then around 2005 or so, Abaranger to Go-Onger were dubbed under the Power Rangers title. Hurricanger was skipped, according to Mr. Yellow, probably because it was deemed 'too Japanese' and Koreans have problems with Japanese so maybe Shinkenger will be skipped as well.

Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie

Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue

They aired MMPR to Wild Force dubbed in Korean and then Abaranger to Go-Onger dubbed under the Power Ranger title, and now Gaoranger after Go-Onger.

Abaranger logo in Korea was a carbon-copy of the American Power Rangers Dino Thunder logo but the zords came in boxed like the Bandai Japan ones (like most of the Korea stuff).

Magiranger called Power Rangers Magic Force and its logo looked more like the M insignia.

Boukenger was renamed Treasure Force in Korea.

In Korea, they had a Super Sentai-esque roadshow.

Gekiranger logo used and called called Wild Spirit. (I know, irony since Gaoranger was called Jungle Force instead of Gaoranger and Gekiranger was called Wild Spirit instead of Jungle Fury).

Go-Onger was released as Power Rangers Engine Force with the Go-Onger logo.

Just like in Japan, the Go-Onger vs. Gekiranger movie was released but as Power Rangers.

Power Rangers Jungle Force---which is Gaoranger dubbed in Korean.  On the official website from Bandai Korea of Power Rangers features Jungle Force (Gaoranger).

Okay, here is the main focal point of this post. Here we got Power Rangers Wild Force, renamed Jungle Force. But the toyline is a combination of the Bandai America Power Rangers toyline and the Bandai Japan Super Sentai toyline. Bandai Korea used a different background than Bandai America did, the logo is reminiscent of the Wild Force logo but with the Lion zord more prominent. Notice how the Yellow Ranger above is male because they are showing Gaoranger and in Gaoranger, the yellow ranger is male.

The Jungle Force (Wild Force) Pictures comes from this site.
