Representation of Colors in Super Sentai (2018)

Art by Taiko554

Red
Red usually represents courage, sacrifice, aggression, love, negativity, passion, socialism, heat, fire, beauty, leadership, injury, danger, blood, and conservatism. The As for the Sentai Reds 2011-2018, there is a mix bag of bubbly and serious and stubborn. Alata is positive and Marvelous is firey, aggressive and stubborn. Hiromu is serious and blunt. Daigo is positive and bubbly. Right is positive and bubbly. Takaharu is serious. Yamato is positive and Lucky is bubbly and stubborn. Tsurugi is prideful, arrogant and intelligent. While Kairi and Keiichiro are both serious, Keiichiro being hot-blooded and Kairi being impulsive. Alata, Daigo, Right, Yamato and Lucky have been positive characters, always looking at the bright side. Marvelous, Hiromu, Tsurugi, and Takaharu have been serious but with a sense of humor.

Blue
Blue can represent ice, water, sky, sadness, winter, royalty, cold, calm, magic, and truth. In the English language, blue often represents the human emotion of sadness. Most of the 2000's blues are calm. The 2010's ones are no exception. Hyde is serious, calm, and sometimes sad. Joe is the serious one but can laugh at a joke. Ryuji is reasonable and cool-headed, often referred to as the big brother. Nobuharu is reliable, clumsy, shy and funny, the opposite of calmness, coldness and sadness. Haru is cautious and punctual. Yakumo is actually quick tempered but also has a cool demeanor. Sela doesn't like to lose and doesn't want to show her weakness. She is associated with water as she is a shark. Garu is short-tempered and impulsive. Tooma is the calm one. So Yakumo and Garu are short tempered while the other ones are cool and collected except for Nobuharu who is the opposite. Yakumo and Nobuharu are used for comic relief.

Green
Green usually represents nature, growth, hope, youth, sickness, health, spring, money, and envy. In many folklores and literature, green has traditionally been used to symbolize nature and its embodied attributes, namely those of life, fertility, and rebirth. Green Rangers usually represent nature, growth, hope, youth, health, and envy. Most Green Rangers are the comic relief, stubborn one, or the decent one. Hanto, Sen, and Don are a few that represent comic relief. Most of the time when a Green Ranger has a elemental power, it is to do with nature, Magiranger had Nature and Shinkenger had to do with Wood/Forest. Don was nervous, smart and comic relief. Souji is cool and calm. Hikari is calm but opposes Right at times. Tusk is smart, sensitive and kind. Hammie is sarcastic, hyperactive and self-motivated. Sakuya is laid-back. So Sakuya, Don and Hikari are lax at times, Souji and Tusk are serious when it comes to fighting. Hammie is unique not only that she is female but she is not comedic relief in a slapstick sort of way. Most of them do represent youth. Only Tusk represents nature. Magi (GoseiGreen) and Luna (Midoninger) were only temporary rangers. Luna was bubbly and there was not much to Magi other than he died and was Hyde's friend.

Yellow
Yellow represent sunshine, warmth, fun, happiness, warning, friendship, caution, intelligence, cowardice, love, hope, optimism, imagination, curiosity, surprise and thrill. Most Yellow Rangers are the happy-go-lucky ones. They have represented almost all the properties previously mentioned. There are some Yellow Rangers that are the opposite of happiness and optimism. Moune is strict and perfectionist, Luka is a badass and cocky about it, Yoko is impulsive and stuck up. Mio is a tomboy, Nagi is friendly, Leo is strong but has a bad temper, Spada is the put-together father figure, and Umika is carefree and playful. Nagi and Spada represent friendship. Umika and Mio represent happiness. Leo and Luka represents thrill and curiosity. Moune and Yoko represent precociousness.

Pink
Pink has represented girls, love, health, fairies, beauty, cuteness, and glamor. And all the Pink Rangers have in some way represented all those aspects (fairies only to a few). The majority of the Pink Rangers in Sentai had to represent feminine side, be super girly. Eri is bubbly and super cute, representing love, beauty and cuteness. Ahim De Famille is regal and polite, but not above fighting. Amy is free spirited. Kagura tells tall tales and her imagination is huge. Kasumi is a girl sharp-tongued genius. Raptor is a cute dreamer. Tsukasa is calm and collected and has a plush toy collection. Eri, Ahim, Kagura and Raptor represent the ultra feminine stereotype. While Tsukasa and Amy are feminine tomboys if that makes sense. They are masculine/tomboy but not too much, with a touch of feminity. Kasumi is somewhere in the middle.

White
Most of the time, White represents bravery, purity, nobility, softness, emptiness, knowledge, snow, heaven, peace, life, clean, air, sunlight, surrender, clouds, frost, angels, weakness, protagonist, winter, and innocence. White Rangers have represented bravery, purity, nobility, softness, knowledge, snow, peace, life, clean, winter, and innocence since more than half have been female and half have been male. The one that represented snow and winter is Miyuki, the one that has been complete opposite is Abare Killer. Fuuka is optimistic and jolly. Amu is cute, feminine and also helpful and brave. I don't know Lucky also is counted as a White warrior but he also represents bravery, angel and light.

Black
Black has represented darkness, secrecy, power, mystery, death, fear, antagonist, strong, chaos, evil, bad luck crime, elegance, anarchy, rebellion, non-conformity, individuality, and solidarity. Black Rangers have represented darkness, power, mystery, strength, rebellion, non-conformity, individuality, and solidarity. I don't know if DekaMaster and ZyuohtheWorld are counted as black but in some sources they are. The one in between DynaBlack and GoggleBlack is Magne Warrior from Bioman by the way. Agri of Goseiger is tough and willing to make sacrifices. He represents strength, Ian is a Lothario and a bad boy with a past. He can represent rebellion and non-conformity. Champ represents strength, mystery, and solidarity as a noble robot who wanted to find his creator's killer. ZyuOhtheWorld is a sweet kid that was brought into darkness, mystery and power.

Gold
A cousin to yellow (orange and brown as well BTW) is gold. While green may be the color of U.S. money gold is the color of riches and extravagance. Because gold is a precious metal, the color gold is associated with wealth and prosperity. It can also represent praise, commendation, valuable, positive, superior, outstanding, excellence, and favored person. Most Gold Rangers (save for Marigold and BeetBuster) as Sixth Rangers and are considered the best and powerful. BeetBuster/Masato is odd and playful, Utsusemimaru is seemingly cold and calm but also caring and comforting, Kinji is a naive fanboy who can hold his own. Balance is shady, energetic, and flashy. Patren X hasn't debuted as of yet, so I can't write anything yet. Kinji and Balance represent positive and favored person. The others represent value, excellence and superior.

Silver
Silver, especially a shiny, metallic silver, is cool like gray but livelier, more playful. Silver can be sleek and modern or impart a feeling of ornate riches. Silver often symbolizes riches, just as gold does. Silver can be glamorous and distinguished. While women are seen as old, gray-haired men are seen as graceful aging. The silver-tongued is considered witty, eloquent speaker. Most Silver Rangers (except for Stag J. Beetle/StagBuster) are sixth rangers and are considered the most powerful. Patren X hasn't debuted as of yet, so I can't write anything yet. Only two Silvers have been female and two have been robots. GoseiKnight is mysterious and serious, Gai is the ultimate positive fanboy, Torin is a mentor with a sense of humor, Daigo's dad was mysterious and strong, Naga has no emotion but wants to have it and J is egoist and wants to be cool. So most of them are lively and playful, except for GoseiKnight.

(Art by lunastar2497)
Violet
Purple is associated with royalty and nobility (stemming from classical antiquity when Tyrian Purple was only affordable to the elites). A mysterious color, purple is associated with both nobility and spirituality. Since there has only been one Violet/Purple warrior in both franchises, there is not much to go on. Gou/Geki Violet was hot-headed, serious and creative, he cared a lot about his little brother. Wolzard who was dark and mysterious. The original KyoryuViolet was a little flashy but also caring and strong. Yayoi is smart and reserved and has a crush on Daigo. Shou Ronpo is Ryu Commander, is like an old man who had a habit of missing the point, is goofy and doers have a serious side. While Shou Ronpo represents nobility, the Conductor/Toq7gou does not but he is mysterious at times.

Orange
Orange represents desire, fire, engineering, determination, compassion, endurance, and optimism. Fire is repeated from Red and Optimism is repeated from Yellow. The first orange warrior in Sentai is BattleCossack, he was good at science. DekaSwan was also good at science (engineering) but also compassionate and optimistic. Akira is no-nonsense and carefree but somewhat suicidal by his catchphrase. Bud/ZyuohBird is stalwart and mysterious. Stinger is quiet, serious and short-tempered. All of them can stand for compassion and endurance and determination. Akira and Stinger can stand for desire.

Cyan
Cyan is a restful, calming color that symbolizes relaxation, especially that shade of cyan known as bright turquoise which can be the color of the water in lagoons in tropical countries. Cyan not only counts KyoryuCyan and Ooguma Skyblue but also Blue Swan, Blue Ninja, Hurricane Blue, MagiBlue and ZyuOh Shark. Ramirez is brave and caring. Kotaro is optimistic and impulsive. Most of them are cool and relaxed.

Grey
Gray is a cool, neutral, and balanced color. The color gray is an emotionless, moody color that is typically associated with meanings of dull, dirty, and dingy, as well as formal, conservative, and sophisticated. The color gray is a timeless and practical color that is often associated with loss or depression. Tessai represents emotionless and calmness. Shinya has to find courage. Naga/KyoryuSilver also is emotionless.

Representation of Colors in Power Ranger (Updated 2016)

I did this post back in 2011, the update is now in 2016.
Red
Red usually represents aggression, love, negativity, passion, socialism, heat, fire, beauty, leadership, injury, danger, blood, and conservatism. Red is used as a symbol of courage and sacrifice, as in blood split in sacrifice or courage in the face of lethal danger. Red Rangers are usually Stalwart Leader, Reckless or Childish Leader, or young upstart. Recently Red Rangers have been reckless or childish, but there some that are serious and true like Scott and Jayden. Most Red Rangers have represented aggression, love, passion, heat, fire, and leadership, but rarely negativity, injury, danger and conservatism. Most of the time when a Red Ranger has an elemental power, it is to do with nature, Mystic Force and Samurai had to do with Fire. Troy of Megaforce was very stalwart and silent, we barley knew anything about him. Tyler of Dino Charge has been more like a kid, happy go-lucky, quick to get upset and as a leader, more like a buddy.

Ziggy, Bridge, and Joel are a few that represent comic relief. Most of the time when a Green Ranger has an elemental power, it is to do with nature, Mystic Force had Nature and Samurai had to do with Forest. Mike (Samurai) was impulsive and a prankster while Riley (Dino Charge) was a logical guy who liked puzzles.

Blue
Ice, water, sky, sadness, winter, royalty, boys, cold, calm, magic, and truth. In the English language, blue often represents the human emotion of sadness, e.g. "He was feeling blue". Most of the time when a Blue Ranger has an elemental power, it is to do with nature, Mystic Force and Samurai had to do with Water. Most Blue Rangers are the calm one, sometimes the stubborn one, when a girl is a blue ranger, most of the time she is the calm one. Most Blue Rangers represent Calmness and truth. For example, Kevin (Samurai) and Kai (Lost Galaxy) have been serious. Lucas (Time Force) was the 'cool' one. Dax (Operation Drive) was the goofy one. Noah of Megaforce was the smart but insecure one while Koda of Dino Charge has been serious, heartwarming and a bit of comic relief.

Yellow
Yellow represent sunshine, warmth, fun, happiness, warning, friendship, caution, intelligence, cowardice, love, hope, optimism, imagination, curiosity, surprise and thrill. Most Yellow Rangers are the happy-go-lucky ones (Kelsey, Katie, Emily). They have represented almost all the properties previously mentioned. There are some Yellow Rangers that are the opposite of happiness and optimism, like Taylor of Wild Force and Gia of Megaforce. When elemental, Yellow has been used for a variety of elements such as Earth and Thunder and Lighting like Chip of Mystic Force.

Pink
Pink has represented girls, love, health, fairies, beauty, cuteness, and glamor. And all the Pink Rangers have in some way represented all those aspects (fairies only to a few). The majority of the Pink Rangers in Sentai had to represent feminine side, be super girly. The few Pink Rangers that have been tomboyish have been Jen, Vida of Mystic Force, Rose, Shelby, and Mia. Emma of Megaforce was cheery and Shelby of Dino Charge was tomboyish and a dino lover.

White
Most of the time, White represents bravery, purity, nobility, softness, emptiness, knowledge, snow, heaven, peace, life, clean, air, sunlight, surrender, clouds, frost, angels, weakness, protagonist, winter, and innocence. White Rangers have represented bravery, purity, nobility, softness, knowledge, snow, peace, life, clean, winter, and innocence since half have been female and half have been male. The one that represented snow and winter is Udonna, the one that has been complete opposite was the evil White Dino Ranger. The newest white Ranger is in Ninja Steel.

Black
Black has represented darkness, secrecy, power, mystery, death, fear, antagonist, strong, chaos, evil, bad luck crime, elegance, anarchy, rebellion, non-conformity, individuality, and solidarity. Black Rangers have represented darkness, power, mystery, strength, rebellion, non-conformity, individuality, and solidarity. Dillon of RPM reminds of rebellion and non-conformity and solidarity. Most Black Rangers are the serious one or bad boy. Sometimes the comic relief like Zack and Jake or shy one like Adam and Danny (PRWF). With strength, Tommy (PRDT)  come to mind. Chase has been the ladies man and a bit of comic relief.

Most Gold Rangers as Sixth Rangers and are considered the best and powerful. Daggeron were stern teachers, Trey was powerful and serious, Gem was happy-go-lucky and liked shiny things and things that exploded, and Genta was happy-go-lucky, hard working and earnest. Jason, by extension of being the Gold Ranger as well was also seen as strong and powerful. Antonio of Power Rangers Samurai was happy-go-lucky and determined and doesn't give up. Ivan was more a comic relief, with his fish out of water stchick. At this point, the Gold Ninja Steel Ranger hasn't been cast yet.

Most Silver Rangers (except for Nova and RPM) are sixth rangers and are considered the most powerful. Zhane, Merrick, Tyzonn and Orion are fall under this. Gema like her brother liked exploding things but was a bit judgmental but that changed. Orion is a fish put of water.

Violet
Purple is associated with royalty and nobility (stemming from classical antiquity when Tyrian Purple was only affordable to the elites). A mysterious color, purple is associated with both nobility and spirituality. Since there has only been one Violet/Purple warrior in both franchises, there is not much to go on. =R.J./Violet Wolf Ranger was a neo-hippie, very calm zen master, with his own daddy issues. There was also Koragg who was dark and mysterious. Albert was a scaredy cat and Kendall is the smart one.

Orange
Orange represents desire, fire, engineering, determination, compassion, endurance, and optimism. Fire is repeated from Red and Optimism is repeated from Yellow. There has not been many orange warriors. Most of the time it is mixed with white like with GekiChopper/Rhino Ranger and DekaSwan/Kat Ranger. The only real orange warrior in Sentai were BattleCossack and Toq 6 Gou in Toqger which was not adapted into Power Rangers. Deka Swan as compassate, Ken (Chopper) had endurance, and Dominick (Rhino) had determination.

Pink Ranger cast in Power Rangers 2017 movie

UPDATED 10/20/15
This afternoon my Power Force rep e-mailed Power Force to tell us to watch the new @powerrangersmovie at Instagram to check new casting news. British actress Naomi Scott (The Martian and Lemonmouth) has been cast as the Pink Ranger, rumored to be called Kimberly but it is unknown at the moment. Other kind-of known actors are Austin Butler (Aliens in the Attic) and Daniel Zovatto (It Follows) were in the running for Red and Black Ranger with unknown actors.

Skirts on Ranger Keys

UPDATED 4/21/15 7PM EST
I couldn't start this post until I saw more female keys and thanks to the Toys R Us Exclusives in 2015, we are getting more but not all. Now here is a curious thing, some promo pictures show the keys with skirts and they don't come with them. Some prototypes of Pink Rangers that have skirts don't come with the line. Some pictures are from Ranger Crew Blog, Megaforce Cast and Ranger Crew Facebook, thank you to Fury Diamond.

Wave 2 and 4 Keys
In the promo RPM Yellow and Ninja Storm Blue have skirt lines but the actual keys do not. Yellow Jungle Fury and Zeo Yellow who have skirts in real life do not have them on their keys at all. Top is promotional photos and bottom is the actual keys. The one to the left is from Rangercrew and the ones to the right are mine.

 Super Megaforce and Mighty Morphin
The promo for Super Megaforce Line had the skirt design but the actual key does not. Pink did not have the design on any of her promo pics that I know of. Both Rangers have skirts on the show.
As for MMPR, Pink had a skirt and Yellow originally had no skirt and no skirt is seen on any of her keys. The Mighty Morphin SDCC 2014 exclusive metallic pink ranger key has a skirt (thanks to Fury Diamond for the pic) but in the promo pic she does not. Neither does Mighty Morphin Pink and Yellow keys displayed at the Bandai booth this year. The top photos are the promotional photos and the bottom left is my photo and the bottom right are from Rangercrew.
Above left picture from Megaforcecast/Rangercrew. At the SDCC 2014 and promotional pic, MM Pink has no skirt but in the actual product that comes in the MMPR Set D in late 2014 she has a skirt.

  SDCC 2013 Prototypes
I am referring to these as prototypes until further notice. Most of these pics are from TokuNation. Above are Lost Galaxy Pink, Aquitar White, Turbo Pink, RPM Silver, Time Pink, Wild Force White, Space Yellow and Space Pink. All photos from Tokunation. Lost Galaxy, Turbo and Space Pink had skirts on the show, as well as Space Yellow and RPM Silver but these prototypes had no skirts. Wild Force White, Aquitar White and Time Force Pink had skirts and have lines on the keys. All these keys except for Wild Force White and Space Pink appeared at SDCC 2014 and they remained the same. Operation Overdrive Yellow was also there but I forgot to put her on the pic.
SDCC 2014 Prototypes on Display
All above pictures from Megaforce Cast, I put RPM Yellow to show it has no skirt and it is like our keys. Pink Zeo, Yellow OO, Samurai Pink and Mystic White had skirts on the show. Out of all these keys, only Samurai Pink has a skirt. In this picture you can see Zeo Pink, Lost Galaxy Yellow, SPD Pink, Operation Overdrive Yellow, Samurai Pink, Wild Force Yellow, Mystic Force White, and RPM Yellow.
SDCC 2014 Banner Keys
At San Diego Comic Con, Bandai had posters and banners of other keys unreleased and not on display. All these pics form Megaforce Cast, in this picture you can see Mystic Force Blue, Mystic Force Pink, SPD Yellow, Dino Thunder Yellow, Megaforce Yellow and Lauren (Samurai Red). Mystic Force girls, Megaforce Yellow and Lauren have skirts on the show and they have them on these keys. Yellow Dino has a skirt on the show but not on the key on the poster from what I can tell. Lauren has been teased but hasn't been released yet.

Toys R Us 20 Key Set
Yellow Dino Thunder, Pink Turbo and Pink Zeo had no skirts in the promotional image but on the actual keys, they have skirts. Can't find a bigger pic for Yellow Dino (so she's Ant-Man in this scenario). Yellow Dino has a black skirt, Pink Zeo has a gold skirt and Pink Turbo has a white skirt. Pink Turbo also comes in the Turbo Set B and Pink Zeo comes in Zeo Set B.

Wave 6/Wave 1 of 2015
Yellow Lost Galaxy and SPD Pink come with their second packs and have no skirts as their real counterparts don't have. White Aquitar has a skirt (as she had at both SDCC). RPM Silver and Mystic White have skirts in real life but not on the keys. Both RPM Silver and White Mystic Japanese Keys (Go-On Silver and MagiMother) had no skirts.  The Alien Ranger and Lost Galaxy Set B are now available at Toys R Us.

Wave 7/Wave 2 of 2015
Yellow Wild Force come with their second packs and have no skirts as their real counterparts don't have. Yellow OO and In Space Yellow keys have skirts (even though their SDCC keys didn't have skirts). Samurai Pink and Time Force Pink have skirts just like their SDCC counterparts. As of April 2015, Operation Overdrive, Wild Force, Samurai, Space and Time Force have been found in select Toys R Us.
So why is this a big deal?
It's not. It is just interesting to talk about. I always like the difference from prototype to actual product.
