Power Rangers Samurai - The Team Unites - Episode Review

It seems that this is not the first episode, as we saw clips of them using the first episode of Shinkenger and this uses footage from Episode 3. Maybe it is the first and the 'origin' story will be told later.

"The Team Unites"
The five Rangers are training with Jii but Mike isn't doing well. The bad guys send a monster to increase the Sanzu river. Bulk shows his 'dojo' to his 'nephew' Spike inside a garage. Jayden plays with his lion zord and Jii tells him no one knows where Mike is. Mike with two friends, who ask where he has been, they say he was a good gamer. His not much with the information. The monster comes out of a crack and punches victims. Mike runs towards it. The monster Rofer attacks the friends. Mike morphs and tries fighting it. Some lame lines later... Mike falls from a building and Jayden arrives to fight the monster. The monster starts tot dry up and leaves.

Back at the Shiba house, they bandage up a shirtless Mike. Jayden tells him to stay away from his friends. Mike says he is going to go to check on them. At the video game arcade, he sees them and he narrates that he won't be able to hang out with them anymore. Mike practices at night at the same time that Jayden does. Rofer and the Moogers attack again. Four Rangers morph. Rofer comments on Green missing and he arrives and morph and they fight the Nighloks (which seems to be the name of the whole group of villains). Green takes the foe on his own, Jayden intervenes but Mike has tangled him up and bests him. Rofer becomes big. Mike makes his zord 'Bear Folding Zord' big and he changes into Mega Mode. He enters his cockpit and unfolds his saber (the new one) and puts it in place. The Bear fights the monster. The other Rangers make their zords big and change to mega mode. They form the Samurai Megazord. They stay still and focus on the monster and manage to defeat him. Back at Shiba House, they all applaud Mike. Mike says he couldn't do it without Jayden. They then put their hands together. Real sappy moment.

Review:
It is very much like the Shinkenger source, some fans may complain, but if the writing in Sentai is good, why not transfer the story? American kids can't see Sentai, so why not have it? But I do wince at the monster's goofy dialogue and rhyming. Also, the group are way too serious, they say Mike is the funny one but so far in this episode he is rather serious. One obvious line: "Mike, You have come a long way." I do like they kept most of the names from Shinkenger such as the Sanzu River, Dayu, and the Shiba House. The inclusion of Bulk is very welcomed and doesn't seem too wedged in. Trying to stay true to Shinkenger and also please Mighty Morphin fans and get them nostalgic on MMPR is a big task. I didn't think these two could mesh but in this episode, they mesh with ease.

Being a nitpicky fan, I am not fond of Power Rangers Samurai opening credit sequence. They are obviously paying homage to the first season with the cast member title cards. The song is fine but the font choice seems a bit lazy and the title cards for each castmember seem to go too fast and the rest of the sequence doesn't have the rhythm of past seasons. I do like how all the villains finally have a group name, it has always been just by the name of the main villain. From this one episode, you can't really can get a read on the characters. By the way, the close caption calls the background theme music as 'lively rock music' and the 'Samurai Strike' at the end they call as 'Samurai Slash.' For kids, things would have probably get very confusing. As they don't explain what their symbols represent and why they go into Mega mode. The villains do explain their plot.

Can Saban really reclaim the exact height of past popularity of Power Rangers?

I sort of have been avoiding this conversation but the more media outlets that have been covering the premiere of Power Rangers Samurai, they are calling it a 'comeback' or an attempt to 'regain the former splendor' and I feel compelled to say something now. Some incorrectly say Saban is making a comeback, as if he always owned it and it hasn't been on the air for 15 years. Some get it right that Saban acquired the franchise back from Disney after selling it in 2002. I, as a long time fan, have been reminding people Power Rangers is quote 'still around' since Lightspeed Rescue (2000). Kids still know its around, it is still a staple (important element). If parents have taken their children to the Disney Store or Disneyworld in the past 8 years, they would know Power Rangers was still around. But what I had not realize that these non-fans and people who haven't been aware of it have, is they mean that Power Rangers haven't been in as in the height popularity of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers back from 1993 through 1995 (During Season 3, popularity waned).

Another thing that hurt the franchise has been the lack of visibility. Disney buried it, on channels that not everyone had. They had it from 2003 to 2005 on ABC Family--which wasn't as big as it is now, and then moved it to Toon Disney, which not everyone has on their cable plan. Once it became Disney XD, they kicked off Power Rangers and buried Power Rangers RPM (Season 17) to ABC. Some local affiliates of ABC refused to show it as it doesn't reach education requirements and some put it at 5 in the morning (like in my area of Miami). Disney thought when they sold it to Saban, he was going to put it on another channel that wasn't Nickelodeon, but it is now on Nick. And putting it on Nick instead of NickToons is smart, like if Disney had put Power Rangers on the Disney Channel. NickToons is the equivalent of ToonDisney/Disney XD and it will be airing repeats soon enough.

So do I think Power Rangers will return to its former glory? I personally believe that with Disney, merchandise-wise, it picked up a lot of vendors. It was very visible in stores like Wal-Mart and Disney Store (well, in later years they buried their PR section). But I don't think it will completely be like it was back when, but it will be better than it was with Disney or when it waned in popularity. Saban Brands is definitely embracing technology, like iPhones, Twitter, Facebook and from what I hear, Netflix--hopefully. What fans are hoping for are DVDs. I am looking forward to this, all fans are giddy to all these new things. So in short, I do think Power Rangers will have more visibility and be popular with kids. There is no doubt about kids loving Power Rangers (I am an elementary school teacher and see kids under 8 still playing Power Rangers). Many kids that grew up with the first season are adults like us, but I suppose just a fringe amount. Maybe it won't be as 'big' as a cultural phenomenon with adults older than 40.

"Video games for Nintendo Co.’s Wii and DS will be released this year, and a movie may follow in time for the live-action series’
20th anniversary in 2013, Dekel said." Fans were wondering about the 20th anniversary, it seems it will be following the 20 years and not 20 seasons, like past anniversaries counted seasons. Where Power rangers Samurai has been considered by fans as Season 18, some sources quote it as 19, counting the MMPR Reversion in 2010 as Season 18.

Is It Just Me?: Gokai Silver

WARNING: You may not agree with my opinion. Please do not post angry comments.
When I first saw Gokai Silver's helmet, I couldn't shake a feeling of familiarity. Fans have expressed that his visors look like sunglasses. I believe the top of his helmet is meant to be a do-rag or head scarf. It reminds me more of a stalker or creepy pervert with dark sunglasses and a baseball cap or do-rag. Of course, I believe this is NOT Toei's intention. But I just wanted to check if I am just the only one who sees this association.

Check Out the Gokai Silver's Gokai Spear!

Kamen Rider: Temporary Belt Users

Here are random people who became Riders other than the main person or other ones took over or switch. A long long long list...
Albie (Saban's Masked Rider)
Albie the young kid brother to Dex, became the Masked Rider in one episode. I didn't see the episode, I didn't know it was just a dream sequence.

Goro (Kamen Rider Ryuki)
In Kamen Rider Ryuki, Goro was Kitaoka Shuichi's devoted loyal servant, he pretended to be Zolda to trick Shinji but when Kitaoka died, Goro transformed into Zolda, being killed off by Ohja.

Kōichi Sakakibara (Kamen Rider Ryuki)
In the 13 Riders Special, Koichi was Ryuki and gave the deck to Shinji before he dies.

Shinji (Kamen Rider Knight)
In the 13 Riders Special, Shinji gets the Knight deck when Ren dies.

Kyōsuke Tokumoto (Kamen Rider 555)
After Shindo's death, he tried to put on the Kaixa belt, but couldn't out of fear because of the other users' deaths. After the Delta belt was discovered and he used it, he believed the belt was rightfully his because of the belt's side effect. Not only that, he also gained some power from the belt.

Kiyotaka Nishida (Kamen Rider 555)
Temporarily used the Kaixa belt in episode 11 and 12. With the Kaixa Gear, he destroyed Crocodile Orphnoch's first life. But he soon died in Mr. Masuda's arms from the belt's side effect.

Takahisa Shindō (Kamen Rider 555)
Used the Kaixa belt in episode 12 to fight the Crocodile Orphnoch, despite others' protest, but the Orphnoch knock the belt off him, forcing him to revert and disinterage from the belt's side effect.

Rina Abe (Kamen Rider 555)
Rina Abe is Shuji Mihara's friend, former classmate and co-worker in the orphanage. She wore the Delta armor but was kicked out of it a few seconds later.

Saya Kimura (Kamen Rider 555)
A "nekojita" much like Takumi, Saya briefly wore the Delta Gear. Eventually she found her way to the Kikuchi Dry Cleaning shop and worked part-time there. She waited to see what kind of person Takumi was before deciding to hand over the Delta Gear to him.

Yuji Kiba (Kamen Rider 555)
Yuji Kiba is Horse Orphnoch and temporarily wears the Faiz Gear (when Takumi become the Wolf Orpnoch) and The Kaixa Gear (near the end of the series).

Kamen Rider The Bee (Kamen Rider Kabuto)
Sou Yaguruma, Shun Kageyama, Arata Kagami, and Masato Mishima all became Kamen Rider the Bee.

Yuri Aso (Kamen Rider Kiva)
Yuri Aso is the founding member of the Fangire Hunters. She became Kamen Rider Ixa in the Kamen Rider Kiva movie (2008).

Megumi Aso (Kamen Rider Kiva)
Megumi Aso is a famous model and the daughter of Yuri living in the year 2008. Megumi became Kamen Rider Ixa in the Kamen Rider Kiva movie (2008). In the S.I.C Hero Saga side story King of Vampire, Kivala chooses Megumi to become Kamen Rider Kivala.

Kengo Eritate (Kamen Rider Kiva)
Kengo Eritate is an independent rock guitarist and vocalist from Tokyo who lied about coming from Osaka out of shyness. When Nago is injured in action, Kengo eagerly takes his place as the Ixa System's user.

Maya (Kamen Rider Dragon Knight)
With Kase vented, Eubulon made her into Kamen Rider Siren. She later gave her Advent deck back to Kase when Kase returned. Eubulon gave her magical martial arts fighting knowledge, that we are to assume went away once she gave up the deck.

Akiko Narumi (Kamen Rider W)
Akiko Narumi is Shotaro's boss and landlord at the Narumi Detective Agency. Episode 30 she becomes W, well the Joker part. I didn't see the episode, I didn't know it was just a dream sequence.

I am sure there are so many so many more, just leave a comment and I will post it on this post.

Power Rangers: Temporary Rangers

Here are some random people or Rangers (switching colors) who became a ranger for one episode in Power Rangers. I'm sure there are more, I just don't know any, so please post the ones you remember and I will post them here. I am not including Alex (Time Force) or Sky's father (SPD).

Billy as Pink and Kimberly as Blue (MMPR)
In the first season episode "Switching Places," Billy and Kimberly accidentally switch bodies when Squatt messes up Billy's machine. The story didn't match the footage, I would had liked it if they shot some new footage of the Blue Ranger acting like Kimberly and the Pink Ranger acting like Billy. In the reversion, they could had changed the backgrounds but they didn't.

Astronema as Ashley (Power Rangers in Space)
Astronema switches her look thanks to a Body Switcher monster. And she didn't turn into the Yellow Ranger, but Ashley as Astronema did transform into the Yellow Ranger.

Sensei (Ninja Storm)
Cam tries to make his father human again, because he is a guinea pig so he accidentally switches bodies with Shane and gets to be the Red Ranger and fight Kelzaks. He then accidentally switches with Dustin and fights Footzilla as the Yellow Ranger.

Sky (SPD)
To avenge his father, Jack gives Sky his morpher and he morphs into the Red Ranger temporarily before he is ultimately assigned to be the Red Ranger. Bridge showing up as the Red Ranger in "Once a Ranger" suggests Sky switched colors once again and most likely Shadow Ranger.

Super Sentai: Temporary Rangers

UPDATED 2pm EST
Here are some random people who became a ranger for one episode in Super Sentai. I'm sure there are more, I just don't know any, so please post the ones you remember and I will post them here. I am not including Shinken Red (Karou) or the Ranger Captain/Time Red.

Agent 007 (Yuko Katō)
She is part of a trio, They usually acted behind the scenes but occasionally helped the Goranger team in some of their missions.

Episode 37, Mido Ranger was this guy, didn't catch name.

Ken-ichi Yamada (Turboranger)
Ken-ichi Yamada, a nerdy friend of Yohei Hama (Blue Turbo) who appears in Episode 42. He finds out that Yohei is a Turboranger and decides to steal his bracelet to become a superhero.

Mizuki Kido (GoGoV)
Mizuki Kido, Matsuri's dear friend, who had been injured and looked to be crippled, showed up in Episode 9. An accident with the monster of the week transferred GoPink's powers to her, and she had to fight as one of the Gogofive, until she was successful in returning her friend's powers. It reawoke her own courage, and she went at her rehabilitative therapy.

Ryuunosuke Sugishita and Emiri Imanaka (Abaranger)
When they first met Asuka in the first episode, they almost transformed into Abare Blue and Abare Yellow respectively but the Dino Guts or whatever rejected them. This propelled Emiri to wanting to be the Pink Abaranger.

Gokaiger promo week before and Navi ally parrot robot!

UPDATED 4/6/11 1AM EST
(pictures are small anyway so don't bother clicking on them expecting them to be bigger)

They have a treasure chest full of Ranger Keys. I think I see Red Hawk, Shinken Red, Geki Chopper, Bouken Red, Magi Pink, Red Ninja, Go Pink, Geki Blue (?) and Magi Blue. I envy the prop makers. They probably only made 50 or more keys, not all 167 keys (34 teams)--I think this because maybe they didn't have time to make all the keys and/or it would be overkill to ask the props department to make so many keys if not all will appear on screen at once. I figure when they send these keys cover to New Zealand for Power Rangers, that they have to sort them and take out any that aren't for Power Rangers. At first, I thought it would be hard for them since they aren't familiar with Sentai, but a lot of the stunt people are Japanese and know about Sentai, so they can help set them apart.
