Power Rangers Dino Supercharge - Date with Danger - Episode Review

Summary:

Chase has a pattern of what he does on dates. He has trophies. Shelby figures it is the fourth date. Tyler says Chase usually does push-ups. Chase says he doesn't do it anymore. Koda says it is because a girl beat him at pushups once. Chase says this current girl he is dating is different. He accidentally gets electrocuted with a machine Kendall had out. A asteroid lands on Earth and it is monster called Shinge, who offers to gets the Energems for Fury, Snide and Wrench. Chase does some skating moves for his date Kayley. She is unimpressed and complains it has been a hour. He says he is a regular guy. She says there is a thing she has to do and leaves. 

Elsewhere, Tyler opens a letter that someone says he saw his father before he disappeared and some buildings get attacked so he morphs. Chase sees it, morphs and joins Tyler. They meet Fury and Fury introduces Shinge. Shinge says he has a headache, he uses his gun against the Rangers and moves Fury out of the way. He hit a random woman, Chase comes to her rescue. Kayley arrives and offers to take the woman. Chase does an American accent and flips and leaves. He puts the Armor X armor and fights Shinge but gets knocked down. The other four Rangers arrive and get knocked down. 

Fury tells Shinge to forget his headache. Shinge says Fury has been there for millions of years and didn't get one energem. They try to fight. The Rangers shoot at them and they teleport away. Wrench gives Shinge a picture of Koda and Kayley. Shinge shows Heckyl his plan to kidnap Kayley. Heckyl is for it but threatens Shinge anyway. Shelby reads the note that Tyler have from the guy named Rusty, He kisses her cheek and she blushes and he leaves. At the diner, Chase shows Kayley his thropies. She breaks up with hi, saying she met someone else and leaves. He tries to stop her, he wants to know who she is. She says he is the Black Ranger. He quickly says it is him and interrupts himself.

At the base, he says "She dumped me for me." Shelby asks him where he took her on her date. She asked him if he asked her what she wanted to do. She asks if he nows what she likes. He says he'll never have a chance, come sup with an idea and leaves. He gets electrocuted again. Tyler meets with Rusty in a cave where he has a site. He tells him a story where he last saw James and there was a shake and James saved him and the cave collapsed around him. Tyler asks if he got out. Rusty says it is possible. Rusty asks to see Tyler's gem and asks him where he found it. Rusty says it is really something. Meanwhile, Black Ranger meets Kayley in his labored American accent. She says she loves space, she wants to be an astronaut.

Black Ranger and Kayley hang out on his bike and then he shows her a telescope. Kayley would like to know his identity. He says he can't. Later, Keeper speaks to him at the base. He has pictures of them together. Keeper asks if they have a future together. Chase says it was the only way to be with her. Keeper says if with an accent and hiding his identity, could she truly be happy with him? Later on another date, Kayley says she feels close to him. He says it is a problem, he can never tell her who he is, he said they have to be friends. She says she can't get over him. He says maybe another guy before him. She tells him he was all into himself. Black Ranger tells him to give him a chance and they part ways. Chase de-morphs saying he lost her twice.

He hears her screaming and Shinge and Wrench have her. Shinge shoots at him and he sweres on his bike and kicks Wrench and gets Kayley. He tells her to go and he will call the police. The other Rangers arrive. They morph. Tyler is called away by Kendall. The Rangers fight Shinge and Wrench. Shinge tells Snide to make him big, he says he likes his style and he puts his foot down near the Rangers and blasts at them. Plesiozord arrives with Tyler in it. They all jump inside it. They add Parazord. They activate Dino Superdrive and shoot back at Shinge and knock him. They do galactic Para/Plesio Blast but it is isn't enough, Riley addes the Raptor. Shinge takes him down. Poisandra makes fun of Fury in the ship. Fury reverses the mega-beam and he shrinks. 

Back at the ship, Fury tells Shinge to get out of his cell. Shinge says Heckyl says he can pick any cell he wants. Shinge wonder show the mega beam wore off. Fury tells him to watch his step. Back at the diner, Kayley apologizes to Chase. Chase apologizes for just showing off. She says they can try again but not to focus on him. Shelby says she thought he would focus on the grill. He says he is focusing on the girl. Shelby says not the girl but the grill, which is on fire, Chase panics. 

Review:

It is funny how some people didn't notice Chase was changing his accent. Also that Kayley's Kiwi accent slips in most noticeably in the last scene. Accents are tricky, especially when it is on a set with a lot of technical people, actors, props and long hours. These actors have to wait hours for lighting and other crew to set up. It is not easy point and shoot. Shinge is a great character, he was a character like Fury in Kyouryuger, lasting a couple of eps. Shinge reminds me of Heckyl but is a little different as he is over-confident. Also, I didn't like how everyone was on Chase's side. I would had expected Kendall or even Riley to mention Chase should focus on being Ranger other than just love. Keeper is now like that grandpa that gives life advise but disappears when something big happens... like Heckyl entering the base a couple eps back!!!

Also we are introduced to Rusty who in the flashback we briefly see the Silver Energem near him. As James, Tyler's dad is now assumed to be the Aqua Ranger due to the episode summaries (One mentions Tyler and James reuniting and the next mentions the Aqua Ranger being present. Also the toy description says Aqua Ranger has been around for a while and the actor hired to be James is rather young, so we can assume he got the Energem and stayed the age he was when he got lost.), I guess Rusty will be the Silver Ranger. 

Exclusive Interview with Ryan Carter of Power Rangers Dino Supercharge

Thanks to Davi Santos for making this interview possible, he contacted Ryan Carter (who portrays Heckyl on Power Rangers Dino Supercharge) for me for this interview. He was born in New Zealand (lived there for 19 years) and currently lives in Australia. I accidentally spelled Heckyl as "Jeckyl", he said, "Haha, I can't tell if your typo of "Jeckyl" is a typo or a comment on the character, but either way, Jeckyll and Hyde is a definite inspiration for the characters!" And as with the last interview, I had my grandnephew Jaiden ask questions as well!

Lavender Ranger: How did you hear about the role of Heckyl for Power Rangers Dino Charge?

Ryan: It was pretty run of the mill for me hearing about the role. I basically got an email from my agent asking if I would self tape for the character and I was like "hell yea!"

Lavender Ranger: How was the casting process? You told to prepare?

Ryan: It started with a self tape which I filmed while I was living in Australia, then the callback occurred in New Zealand. It was basically a couple hours of script readings, receiving direction from the casting directors and producers as well as doing some (pretty terrible) high kicks to show I have at least some form of co-ordination. Then they did make-up tests yada yada yada. I did meet Davi and James at my audition though, which was lovely. Davi seemed to know more about my character then I did.

Lavender Ranger: I heard there is a story of Heckyl's goggles?

Ryan: There are many! I don't know which one you are referring to, but on the first day of filming I didn't notice I wasn't wearing them until after a few takes in...which is bad. Luckily Chip was there and he added in some genius extra lines to make me randomly whipping out my goggles make perfect sense.

Lavender Ranger: The scene I referred to was Chip remembering the forgotten goggles. These goggles resemble the goggles of a villain from another Japanese series unrelated to the dinosaur one called Go-Busters. Go-Busters was skipped in favor for where the Dino Charge footage comes from. What other goggle stories are there?

Ryan: As far as the goggles go I think the idea for them just came from the costume designer, Sarah, and it's mainly a coincidence that they are similar to the Go Busters character. Haha the other goggle stories are far less interesting then the first, they mainly involve me having to quickly put on the goggles and accidentally slapping myself in the face, poking my eye or the goggles being so askew that Heckyl looked drunk.

Lavender Ranger: In "Forgive and Forget," we discover Heckyl has revealed his true name to the Rangers, why do you think didn't give him a fake name?

Ryan: As much as Heckyl is very cunning, I think he is also a bit cocky. He is very confident and has total faith in his plan and doesn't think the rangers are very smart, so spending time on a fake name and a disguise when they don't know who he is to begin with, would be a waste of time (and a little cliche and tacky in his opinion).

Lavender Ranger: How different is it interacting with costumed characters in Sledge's ship and normally dressed characters?

Ryan: Well I spent most of my time talking with stunt actors in suits. All the lead stunt actors were Japanese and they were some of the most amazing, talented, hard working people I've ever met and acting with them was a ball. They used their skills to make those massive plastic suits into real characters, which made my job a lot easier. Of course acting with the rangers was great as well, they're also very talented at what they do.

Lavender Ranger: Speaking of stunts, did you get to do any stunts?

Ryan: The stunts were almost entirely done by the pros, but I was lucky enough to do a few fight scenes and some minimal stuff at the head and tail end of the stunts (aka I pretend to get blasted, Aki the stunt guy does 4 flips through the air, then I fall 3 feet to the floor). 

Lavender Ranger: You have done stage work before, what was your favorite production?

Ryan: Ummm, that's a tie between two productions. One when I was younger and acting in New Zealand in a show called Exchange where I got to play a collection of completely insane characters ranging from a 13 year old bratty German kid to a wannabe american cowboy. The other was Rausch, just before I did rangers. It was a small show with a short run but the material, the cast, crew and director were all fantastic.

 

Lavender Ranger: How did stage prepare you for Power Rangers?

Ryan: I think for a character like Heckyl theatrical training comes in handy. Chip wanted a big, expressive personality and all the stage work I had done helped me to be comfortable in that "bigness".

Lavender Ranger: Have you ever watched Power Rangers before? If so, what season?

Ryan: While I was growing up in NZ Power Rangers was never on TV (I think it was due to some parents being waaaay to over P.C and it wasn't show due to apparent violence) so instead I watched a lot of Dragon Ball, The Simpsons and any weird creepy horror movie I could get my hands on.

Lavender Ranger: Did you know Snide is modeled after the Power Rangers Dino Thunder villain Zeltrax from 2004? He also has an action figure. Fans are upset that Snide and Zeltrax aren't connected. Any idea why that costume was selected for Snide?

Ryan: Yes, I did know that Snide is based on a previous character, but I don't know much about the season the original character came from. I think that the costume portrayed everything they wanted Snide to be, vicious, strong and reckless, as well as the links to Heckyl's style. Snide also looks very different from any villains that have come on Dino Charge so far so I think that helped too.

 

Lavender Ranger: Other than I, have you had any interaction with the Power Rangers fans? Were you warned about how we can get (notorious for being intense) by the other actors?

Ryan: Haha I was warned about the ranger fans! So far all the interactions have been lovely though. Lots of nice fan art and people seem to enjoy the character (at least I hope they do!)

Lavender Ranger: Have you ever been to the United States?

Ryan: No! I haven't been to the US but am planning on going over soon, sometime this year I hope!

Lavender Ranger: Some ADR is done in the US, I assume your ADR is done in New Zealand? 

Ryan: My ADR is done in Sydney where I am currently living, but they do ADR all over the world for the rangers wherever they are at the time. Its' so much fun though, I love ADR.

Here are my grandnephew's questions:

Jaiden: Do you have a pet?

Ryan: I always have pets! In Sydney my flatmates have a little dog called Skitch, so she is kind of like my current pet. Big dogs are my favorite though, in New Zealand my family have always had Labradors, the one we have now is a failed guide dog called Charlie....we also have 2 cats, but they just eat, sleep and ignore humans.

Jaiden: Do you have a car?

Ryan: In NZ I have a car...I don't have the best track record as a driver though...my cars are often stolen or totaled.

Jaiden: This question for Heckyl, are you a good guy or a bad guy?

Ryan: That's a hard question. I don't think anyone is strictly good or bad. Even characters like Sledge and Fury think that their actions are justified. In the eyes of the Power Rangers (and most sane human beings) I am definitely a bad guy though.

Jaiden: For Heckyl, If Power Rangers defeated you, will you become a good guy?

Ryan: If the Power Rangers defeated me I would probably of been blown up into a million pieces...but if they asked me to join their team I would have to politely refuse the offer.

Jaiden: If you were a Power Ranger, what color would you be?

Ryan: The color blue or black. Sadly those colors are taken and I don't think that Koda or Chase will be giving up any time soon.

Power Rangers Dino Supercharge - Nightmare on Amber Beach - Episode Review

 Episode Summary:

Riley asks Shelby how her accounting test went after she came out of college. She says her dad won't be happy with a B and he comes in to the diner. He says Watkins ice cream is the family business. Shelby reassures her dad, telling him he will re-take the test. He wants to quiz her and he leaves, she sighs. Heckyl tells her she looks exhausted. She says she will rest when she gets her A. He says in a sotto voice that she is sleep sooner than that. At the ship, Heckyl wakes up a monster called Nightmare. Heckyl then gives Shelby a pillow as a gift claiming it is from her father. She sleeps on the pillow. A pink dust enters her and she awakes to see Viviks. She attacks her friends believing they are Viviks. 

She breaks he pillow and the pink dust becomes Nightmare the monster, saying to see her in her dreams. Kendall tells them to go to the base where they examine her. There is no signs. Kendall analyzing the pillow, tells everyone not to sleep. They try to keep themselves awake with activities and studying. Chase and Koda play video games. Ivan and Riley sword fight and almost fall asleep. Kendall says until the pillow is destroyed, the spell will not break. It is time to open the cafe and they are still sleeping. At Sledge's ship, Nightmare tells Heckyl the Rangers aren't sleeping. Fury goes to 'wear' them out. 

Shelby's dad comes to her and sees she is studying about dinosaurs, saying she isn't a little girl anymore and business is the future. Shelby says its boring. (I said the same to my dad back in college) He tries to un-bore her in the kitchen, going over hamburger prices and shows her a sparklers burger with fries. He says he made $4 profit. Get some boring and make it fun with profit. The Rangers get called and they run out. Chase can't find Ivan. The Rangers fight Viviks. Viviks aren't easy to knock out, the rangers are tired. Ivan arrives and takes some out but attacks the Rangers. He falls down the steps. They figure he is sleeping, the purple dust comes out of his mind.

Outside the museum, they carry the Gold Ranger. Koda finds a pillow and breaks it. Riley and Shelby run to her test and bump into her dad. She asks if business won't make me happy. He reassures her. She leaves. He sees a little girl saying she wants to study dinosaurs, the dad reassures her. Shelby asks Riley if he thinks she will be good at running ice cream. He tells her he didn't want to be a cowboy at the farm while everyone wanted it and asks her what she wants. The bell rings and she goes without answering. Curio puts a pillow in Riley's helmet. (Irresponsible!) Riley falls asleep before hoping on his bike. 

Heckyl puts pillows on the other Rangers and they take naps. He takes their energems. Shelby walks in and see their energems and grabs them. Heckyl holds the pillow and walks towards her. Shelby thinks back to Heckyl with the package and pillows and figures she works for Snide and blasts a pillow, making them all awake. She tells them Heckyl is not their friend. Heckyl says they are all friends. Shelby has figured out it is a ploy. Kendall asks i he works for Snide. His tattoo glow and he becomes Snide. The Rangers point their morpher guns at them. Snide threatens them and leaves. Snide mentions not knowing where the base is.

Riley is about to give Fury his Energem when the Rangers stop him and Fury knock him on a container. The pillow is destroyed and Nightmare comes out. The Rangers morph and fight Nightmare and Curio. Nightmare becomes huge and the zords are called. They become Dino Super Drive mode and Pink gets the saber as well as Red. Plesio Charge and Ptera Charge Megazords are formed as well as Stego-Raptor formation. The three Megazords fight. (Red in Plesio, not Purple) The main megazord floats up, Pink does the final attack and they do the final strike to the monster. Shelby passionately discusses fossils at the museum to guests. Her dad has heard it. He tells her that business was his dream, not her dream, Dinosaurs is her passion. She got one last favor--a dinosaur ice cream cake for them all. 

Episode Review:

This felt like a Samurai episode, with the chatty voiceovers and the evil plot not going anywhere. At least the Shelby plot is moving but kind of boring. I did like that Heckyl got revealed and not too later on.  Keeper has no lines but appears at the end of the episode. I do like that Pink Ranger got the final strike in Dino Super Drive.
