Are Power Rangers positive Role Models ?

Are Power Rangers positive role models?

@Fairywork gave me the idea that became this post. What is a role model? Mostly commonly known as someone who people strive to be like or try to copy their morals in their own life. Some people think the notion of basing your own life on someone else is pathetic. American parents have brought up the question about singers, actors and cartoon characters "Are they are good role model for our kids?" I personally see two sides of it. Saying kids or adults depend on a role model only on their life kind of suggests they have no free will. Or depending on actors, musicians and athletes to be role models is a little sort sighted and presumptuous. For example, depending on Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber to be positive role models is a little too much pressure on them and short-sighted as they are young people and artists---artists have to be experiment or if they think they are artists, ha ha.

Anyways, the other side of it is that kids have their parents and teachers as role models first. They don't necessarily have to have teachers as their role models but as speaking as a teacher, we at least try to be a good example. When it comes to Power Rangers or any other fictional character, are they being at least a positive example for children? With all the hula-ba-loo (controversy) about the violence in Power Rangers, how exactly do they measure up?

Perfect Teenagers
The Mighty Morphin teens basically fought evil, got perfect grades in school, and taught martial art classes (at least Jason, Zack and Trini), they found time to clean up the litter at a park, play on a football team, teach a self-defense class for moms, organize a food festival, organize after school programs, act in a school play, organize a talent show, bury a time capsule, organize a big birthday party and much much more. I haven't even listed all of Billy's accomplishments. These things made them 'positive role models' was that they were always polite, they studied, got good grades, they never got detention (except when framed by evil clones), and did lots of community service. Other Rangers that fall in this category are the Zeo/Turbo/Space Rangers, Dino Thunder Rangers, Alyssa of Wild Force, Mystic Force Rangers, Ninja Storm Rangers and Megaforce Rangers (even though not as much as with the volunteer work like MMPR). "Perfect Rangers" also applies for Samurai as they exercised regularly, ate healthy (well considered by Mia's standards) and never did anything 'bad.' Mike was rude to Jii from time to time but that quickly subsided.

Law Enforcement and Public Service providers
Lightspeed Rangers were not police officers but most of them worked for public service like fire fighters, nurse/doctor, etc. As for SPD and Time Force, they were law enforcement. Jack and Z were former criminals and reformed. Ultimately Jack quit SPD but lost his life of crime and was helping homeless. Sometimes Jack did step out of line. RPM and Lost Galaxy Rangers could also be considered like them as they were connected with the government and were publicly known they were Rangers. The majority of Lost Galaxy Rangers worked for the GSA, which was in charge of Terra Venture. Now in RPM, Dillon and Ziggy were imprisoned for sneaking into Corinth but it was excusable I suppose after everything they did.

Questionable Behavior
Some Rangers did some things were 'out of line' or questionable. First off would be Justin, who Zordon chastised for teleporting for personal gain, which was escaping bullies. Leo stuck aboard the shuttle to get into Terra Venture, even though he did save an old lady from criminals and later saved the colony, this can be considered 'imitable behavior.' Disney had more questionable behavior (go figure), like Hunter and Blake who were working under Lothor because they though Sensei killed their parents. Hunter and Blake lied to the Rangers and cause harm to them. Sometimes under a spell. Trent and Tommy were 'evil' under a spell and I will cover them on the next topic. Other characters that have questionable behavior include SPD's Jack (already covered above), DT's Connor, MF's Nick, OO's Will and Ronnie, JF's Jarrod (even before evil influence), RPM's Dillon and Ziggy. Ziggy once tried to escalate a battle with some punks which is against Zordon's rules. But of course this was not during Zordon's era and Zordon wasn't mentioned in RPM.

"Under a Spell" excuse
Lots of Rangers did questionable behavior or negative things when under a spell. Majority of these were in the MMPR-In Space era but also happened in Lightspeed, Ninja Storm, Dino Thunder, Mystic Force, Jungle Fury, RPM and Megaforce. Let's cover the ones under an 'evil spell' like Tommy (MMPR), Kat (MMPR), Karone (In Space), Trent, Tenaya (RPM), Hunter and Blake. We first meet Tommy, he is an okay guy, we don't really know him well. Rita instantly puts him under an evil spell, he lies to Zack, Jason and Kimberly, he is mean to Kimberly, he sends Jason to the Dark Dimension without him knowing, messed up the Command Center and tried to vanish Zordon. As for Trent, he was an artist and a nice guy but became evil under the evil white stone and did various bad things. Eventually he got out of the spell and became good. When he learned his dad was Mesogog, he kept the secret from the other Rangers. Blake and Hunter were tricked and went under a spell of a monster. They eventually sided to good. As for Kat, she endangered Kimberly and others, took the Pink Power Coin, stole the Falconzord and various other things. She snapped out of it out of the goodness of her heart. She and Tommy later proved themselves to the Zeo Crystal, which could only be touched by those who are good.

Tenaya and Karone were main villains who did very bad things but eventually were found out to be under evil spells. Karone, in fact, atoned for this. Tenaya did in her own way, given that she 'turned good' near the finale. As for Jarrod and Camille, Jarrod was possessed by Dai Shi and before so, he was selfish and conceded. Camile was bad through and through except for some semblance of good Lily saw. Their Japanese counterparts had to be forgiven in a battle and wanted to be killed, ultimately they sacrificed themselves for the greater good. But in Jungle Fury, they got a free pass with little to no consequence. Now as for the non-evil Rangers who went under spells, some did bad role model stuff. For example, most of the Rangers became selfish or childish (Kimberly and Billy in "Power Ranger Punks" and Kimberly in "Bloom of Doom" for example). All the Rangers except Aisha started hating each other and split up in "The Hate Monster." Can they be excuse for their behavior just because they were under a spell? Well that is the universal question when it comes to Power Rangers. Writers can let their characters be 'bad' with this excuse.

Conclusion
I think the Power Rangers are good role models because they don't escalate battles (for the most part) with the villains and they fight to save or protect people. This is explicitly stated in Power Rangers Samurai by Jayden. They try to strive for goodness and justice even if they don't always uphold those ideals. Most of the Power Rangers are honest, courageous, volunteer for the community, do their schoolwork if they are in school, are dependable, are there for their friends and so on, on and on. I hope I didn't insult anybody in my first paragraphs about having role models. You can have a role model, that's fine. Everyone can have anything they want. The reasons I bring this up because recently I have been criticized for being insensitive. But sometimes I can't worry about that, I just have to keep going doing what I do. Unlike the Power Rangers, I am allowed to make mistakes.

French, Spanish, if you're not American, you get new Power Rangers Episodes

Last year when we were waiting for the second batch of episodes of Super Samurai, Nickelodeon Latin America (In Spanish in Mexico, Central America and South America) airs them before North America aired them. Now for the second half of Megaforce is airing in France. In France, they started the first half a couple months ago and now as of September 10th, they showed "Ultra Power" and "Last Laugh." This is probably the decision of the higher ups of those channels (Nick LA and Nick France). "Ultra Power" will air September 14 in the United States.

Top 10 Weirdest (for Power Rangers) and/or Confusing Power Ranger plots

Things are pretty weird already on Power Rangers but here are 10 I consider the most strange. Being strange is not a bad thing, I consider these fun. You guys might not agree, these are just my ideas. The weirdest are usually written by Shuki Levy, former executive producer who is now working on his own production called "Tribe of the Wild."

10. Rita and Zedd marrying
Now, Rita and Zedd being married is a norm. We all know it as part of PR history. It is un-questioned basically. Behind the scenes, Lord Zedd was considered 'too scary' by parents and Saban brought in this plot to 'soften' Zedd up. But storywise, Rita never showed caring for Zedd in such a way. She clearly was repulsed by him (pun intended) and this was a power move more than anything. But in the end, like him falling for her without the love potion, she did fall for him. But instead of marrying him, she could had just outpowered him or overthrow him. Other thing is that with the love potion, using moon mud to make herself look young made no sense. He would had loved her under the love potion even without rejuvenating her face. Behind the scenes, it was done in order to have the younger Carla Perez play Rita.

9. Billy aging and Alien girlfriend
In Zeo, they used Billy heroically jumping on the Command Center council in the end of "Hogday Afternoon" as a reason he couldn't gain the Gold Zeo Ranger powers and rapidly age him. He had to go to Aquitar to retain his true age again. This was all done to write Billy out as David Yost chose to leave. I was 13 at the time, as soon as I saw the 'old Billy,' I thought, "Not again." It was like when they substituted Austin, Walter and Thuy with stand-ins and stock footage when they were fired before they were replaced by three new actors. It was just a weird explanation and storyline to get him out of there. We all know now what happened behind the scenes, the PR crew said David Yost was hard to work with while David Yost says there was too many homophobic slurs and a hostile work environment that he left.

 8. Zordon's Wave/Lost Galaxy
This is not so much weird but the most controversial and confusing story line that has cause much debate in the fandom. At the end of "In Space," Zordon was destroyed and his energy wiped out all the villains and monsters the Rangers fought from MMPR to Space. It wasn't said that he wiped out all the aliens in the whole universe but it was assumed. In Lost Galaxy, Scorpio and Trakeena seem to be from deep space, some thought part of Lost Galaxy but then it was clarified that the Lost Galaxy was a separate entity that had to be accessed from the Galaxy Book. In fact, a lot of the Lost Galaxy storylines were strange and made no logical sense. But I've gone over that before, like Mike and the Magna Defender. Mike had fallen inside Mirinoi but Magna Defender seem to come from another planet because Terra Venture was nowhere near Mirinoi when MD arrived.

7. Thrax
There was plenty weird things in Disney but for me, it was pretty standard and explainable. The one headscratcher for fans is when was Thrax conceived. And Thrax having a past with Sentinel Knight is also another headscratcher. Thrax was child of Zedd and Rita. Since Zedd and Rita married in 1995, Thrax had to be created between then and 2007 (when he appears in Operation Overdrive). But PROO already established that Sentinel Knight existed long ago and had conflicts with Moltor and Flurious hundreds of years ago. S.K. was then trapped... when exactly did he encounter Thrax? Oh well, I rather not dwell too much...

6. Dumping the Zeo Powers
Fellow Power Force member Linkara mentioned it made no sense to go from Zeo to Turbo as the Zeo powers were supposed to advance the Rangers and had great power. And out of nowhere, they plum abandon the powers. The Turbo movie does not explain this at all. Some fans infamously created the "Scorpion Rain" prank in order to bridge Zeo and Turbo. For those who do not know, these fans said on the internet it was an unaired episode and a synopsis was posted, some fans believed this. Anyway, storywise this made no sense to dump one pair of powers for like Linkara said, just cars. And plus given that Divatox was a pirate and her goons were more water-based. Wouldn't it had made more sense to give them sea powers? We all now know that Toei requires their adapters to never skip a Sentai season for footage.

5. Justin as a Power Ranger
There seems to be two groups on the Justin thing. When it happened, I was 14 and I didn't like the idea of a kid being a Ranger. Many fans around my age agree. A lot of the Turbo haters bring this up as one of the reasons. But Hector David Jr. (Mike of Power Rangers Samurai), having been around 7 or 8 the time thought it was cool. My 24 year-old friend also agrees, saying it made him think he could be a Ranger and he saw himself in Justin's shoes. Linkara brought up the good point that Zordon never said why he chose Justin as there was plenty other candidates worthy to be Blue Rnager like Billy, Tommy's brother David Trueheart or even Jason, if he wasn't captured by Divatox. Plus, somewhere out there was Zack.

4. Bulk and Skull knowing the 2nd Turbo Rangers
Bulk and Skull all supposedly knew the New Turbo Rangers (Cassie, TJ, Carlos and Ashley) without any introduction, it was like Saved By the Bell: The New Class where the cast rotated a lot but Principal Belding and Screech knew them as part of the gang.

3. Rito and Goldar as Maids
Goldar, who was the biggest badass ever in the beginning was reduced to an amnesiac maid. Comic relief was bad enough but worse was to reduce him to shell of what he once was. Rito we didn't know well, he essentially was only a threat in his introduction and quickly became comic relief. It was just weird to see where he was to see where he went.

2. Bulk and Skull as Monkeys
We pretty much grew up with it and didn't think it was so strange. But come on, think about it. Turning two of the longest running characters, the most popular non-rangers into essentially non-speaking characters (which we did hear them). This whole plot only lasted half of Turbo. It was said to be done in order to make a Bulk and Skull spinoff which never really happened. The weird thing is that Bulk and Skull turned back to normal after the four Turbo Rangers were replaced and they all supposedly knew each other without any introduction (check #4). Wouldn't it had made more sense for them to be monkeys during the second half?

1. Aisha/Tanya Power Transfer
I am careful not to say Alien Rangers saga because I love them. What I still think is weird and confusing is the whole plot where Master Vile reverse time and made the Rangers into Kids. Now because of the Power Coins, the Rangers remembered each other but basically Bulk and Skull only recognized Billy. Tommy was a 'new kid' in 1993, Rocky, Aisha and Adam moved from Stone Canyon in 1994, and Katherine came in from Australia in 1995. Judging by their ages, they were probably meant to be hurled into 1988. But not even that was mentioned. Maybe because it was a 'kids show' they didn't want to go too much into details.

"Too much into details" also applies to Aisha/Tanya plotline. I understood the whole saga of the Rangers going into different times and places to get the Zeo sub-crystals but what made it confusing was what Aisha did. As you may remember, Tanya was left in Africa by her explorer parents and there were sick animals. I originally thought Tanya was from Africa and never was in the States. As an adult, I see they implied she was from the United States as she never seemed to have trouble with adjusting to America in Zeo. I said before she knew English but being from Africa doesn't necessarily mean she didn't know English. Plenty of Africans know English. Aisha thought she could help so she gave Tanya the Zeo sub-crystal and made her into a Ranger. Zordon said that her staying in the past her parents and family would transfer to Africa. Fans took this as Aisha as a Power Ranger never happened. This has caused lots of fan debate, especially now that Super Megaforce is coming up and lots of Rangers are returning and there is debate if Aisha will be a Ranger or not.

2014 Super Sentai Rumors

UPDATED 9/13/13 9PM EST

There has been some rumors for next year going around the internet but I haven't posted a thing because most of the time I post something, it ends up being incorrect. But this year it seems they will have animals, but unknown what specific theme.

New rumors come from Dukemon22 of TokuInsider

Rumor as of now is that the 2014 Sentai will be titled "Senkan Sentai Gounova" (Battleship Taskforce Gounova). Captain Harlock is an Anime from 1953. As the remake for Captain Harlock just released in Japan (probably for the 60th anniversary), it could be named after it. The rumored colors are Red, Pink, Black, Blue and Green. I doubt this because going without yellow twice is gauche. Another rumor was they would have Yellow again. The copyright title usually comes out mid-September and a picture most of the time in December.

http://tokuinsider.blogspot.com/2013/09/another-2014-sentai-rumor-rescue-motif.html
A new rumor has popped up that says the 2014 Sentai will be rescue themed (like GoGoV):

Title: Tokubou Sentai Kyuumeijya (Special Protection Taskforce Life Savers)

  • Another Rescue Sentai, in the mode of GoGoV
  • A further try at the "realistic look" attempted by Go-Busters, with show set up akin to Rescue Fire
  • The number of rangers in the show will be 9, using the pun "Kyuumei" (Life Saving)  and "Kyu" (9)
  • The 9 will be divided up into teams, like the Gouraiger in Hurricanger and Go-OnWings in Go-Onger
  • There will be no main enemy, but a Rogues Gallery like Dekaranger
