PR Sighting in Doctor Who

Joel (jdsadler@lcpshome.org) brought to my attention this clip from the September 3rd, 2011 "Doctor Who" episode "Night Terrors," the Ryuujin/Serperntera toy. Because it is darken, I have no idea which specific toy it is. Nor have I seen the episode.

Andy Ricther Controls the Universe Sighting

Tom Clark has spotted a use of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie from the 2002 FOX sitcom "Andy Ricther Controls the Universe." This was in the pilot episode, where Andy Ricther imagines his friends as superheroes. The Black Ranger is omitted to fit the five. Andy of course is put as the White Ranger. Paget Brewster is put as the Pink Ranger, James Patrick Stuart as Blue, and gender-switching for the other two actors: Irene Molloy as Red and John Salvin as Yellow.

Stephen Lunsford and Felix Ryan in Victorious

I usually do not watch "Victorious" but I was flipping around and found yesterday's episode "A Film my Dale Squires" featured Stephen Lunsford as Dale Squires and Felix Ryan as Damian. Felix Ryan plays Spike on Power Rangers Samurai and has appeared in 3 other episodes as Damian on Victorious. Stephen Lunsford played Kit on Kamen Rider Dragon Knight.

Power Rangers T-Shirt in "Glee"

In the popular show "Glee" episode "Comeback," other than the reference to Power Rangers action figures being used in play marrying each other by Kurt in "Furt", we see Finn in a Power Rangers T-shirt in a 'dream' sequence where Lauren Zizes imagines the crew in their underwear. Some she don't picture shirtless, like Finn. I have to admit I married off my Power Ranger figures as well as a kid.

Power Ranger Sighting: American Dad Halloween Episode

A boy is dressed as a Mighty Morphin Blue Ranger (his helmet has no definition) in this week's American Dad Halloween episode.

Power Ranger Sighting: Halloween: The Curse of Mike Myers

In the 1995 movie Halloween: The Curse of Mike Myers (the one with Paul Rudd) that aired this afternoon on FX, a little boy is playing with a red ranger figure. I put to record but I was unable to catch when he played with it. It was the original 8 inch figure.

Power Ranger Sighting: Frasier

A child (Steven Anthony Lawrence, Beans from Disney Channel's "Even Stevens" in which started Shia LeBeuf's career) in a Halloween episode of Frasier (Season 10 Episode 5 "Tales from the Crypt") who was dressed as a mock blue Time Force Ranger without the mask, I have attached the screen grabs. This is thanks to the Doctor (Michael).

This is not first show that Steven Lawrence was in the Halloween episode. He was also in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Halloween episode in Season Six. If you are not familar with Fraiser, the woman above is Fraiser's father's caretaker Daphne Moon's mother.

Mighty Morphin Power Martyrs

Because Glenn Beck mentioned Jesus, Martin Luther King, Ghandi and another gentleman I forgot his name, Stephen Colbert calls them the Mighty Morphin Power Martyrs. Thought I'd mention it.

Goggle Red sighting in Facts of Life

In the 1986 season 7 episode "Reunion," a Goggle Red from Goggle Five balloon is briefly seen in the beginning of the episode. Goggle Five was the Super Sentai for 1982. This was spotted by my friend Larry.

X-Men/Power Rangers Tie-Ins

Also sent in by Tom Clark, this was Season 3 episode 17 of X-Men. When these guys appear you can hear the MMPR theme (w/out lyrics just the tune). X-Men was partially produced by the Saban company. Only the blue and pink rangers appear and they are clearly parodies, their chests kind of look like the toys where they had circles in the centers.
Advisory: If you are going to tell me about a sighting, you must have a picture. I am not covering parodies and just mentioning. I am only doing power ranger toys, t-shirts, posters, etc. in TV shows.

In around 1994, there were a string of Power Ranger/X-Men t-shirts and sweaters. My cousin had one of the Green Ranger and Beast (it was a sweater), I think they got rid of it, wish I had a picture of it. There were a few others but I forget the match-ups. I don't remember anyone with Wolverine, but I think there was a Red Ranger/Cyclops one and Gambit with another Ranger but I forget who, I don't think it was Black Ranger because I would have gotten it, I liked the Black Ranger.

Time Force toys in King of Queens

Brought to my attention by Tom Clark. King of Queens, season 4 episode "Fender Bender." This episode aired October 15, 2001, the blue and red time force ranger toys appear. I checked and none of the Time Force Rangers ever appeared on the show.

Baboo in The Adventures of Pete & Pete

The Adventures of Pete & Pete was a television show on Nickelodeon in the early 90's that started out as shorts that would air between commercials. They were so popular, they made a series out of them. They were about two brothers named Pete, they had a mother with a plate in her head, the younger Pete had a personal superhero named Artie and a unexplained dancing tattoo.


They call it something else. Poor Vampire.

Malcolm in the Middle connections to Power Rangers

I mentioned before how Buffy the Vampire Slayer had connections to the Power Rangers, now here are some connections to the FOX show "Malcolm in the Middle" (2000-2006).

Bryan Cranston
Believe it or not, Bryan Cranston (the father on Malcolm in the Middle and now star of "Breaking Bad") played the voices of not one but two monsters in the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. He played Snizzard ("Foul Play in the Sky") and Twin Man ("A Bad Reflection On You").

Karim Prince
Karim Prince, who played Cestro the Blue Aquitar Ranger, also played Francis' friend in the military academy called Cadet Stanley. He often played the voice of reason to Francis in the first season. I last mentioned him in the past post about Buffy.

Melody Perkins
In 1999, Justin Berfield (Reese), Erik Per Sullivan (Dewey), and Frankie Muniz (Malcolm) hosted a half-hour FOX Kids Fall Preview special, it aired at 11:30 AM. They mentioned all the new shows and briefly about the second half of Power Rangers Lost Galaxy and a reverse shot of Astronema turning into Karone, making it look like Karone was turning herself back into Astronema. No real new footage as I recall. Made sense since FOX Kids and FOX were the same channel. Funny thing was that the special aired months before "Malcolm" premiered, it started January 9, 2000. Melody Perkins went on to guest star in an episode of the show! She played an old classmate of Francis and had to wear a fat suit, she was then a super-skinny babysitter to the other brothers, they all had crushes on her, but Francis, not being in town, thought she was still unappealing to him and she desperately wanted to reconnect, he missed the opportunity.

UPDATE 5/30/10: Apparently Cerina Vincent (PRLG) was in an episode called Malcolm vs. Reese as a character by the name of Carly. I do not recall this. I mean I know it is true but maybe the role was not that memorable.

Power Rangers SPD on Lost Season One

This is old news but I wanted to address this because I am a Lost fan and Lost is ending soon. In the first season finale, "Exodus Part 1" we see a flashback of Michael and Walt on the morning of the flight. Walt turns on the TV and is watching Power Rangers SPD. The episode took place in September 22, 2004. The specific footage was of the episode "Beginnings, Part II", premiered on February 2, 2005. This mistake was caught by Power Ranger and Lost fans alike. The producers were always about no mistakes, I wanted to catch at least one mistake, I was glad with this mistake, since it was Power Ranger related. Lost producers clearly did not noticed this, they had access of the footage through Disney, but probably didn't realize the show was time-sensitive. Oh it is not the only mistake--apparently on the episode, a cameraman (part of the film crew) can be seen on the beach filming the survivors attempt to launch the raft.

"Ji-Yeon" Season 4 Episode 7
I didn't notice this. This picture is from Lost: Nerd Winks - UGO.Com but they mistakenly put a picture of the sentai Turborangers which never became Power Rangers. In this episode, Jin goes and looks for a Panda stuffed toy and in the toy aisle behind him are Power Rangers Mystic Force and Operation Overdrive toys.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer connections with Power Rangers

Before Power Rangers, what lead me to it was "Saved by the Bell," with its teenagers and outlandish situations, meant for kids. Power Rangers was a natural progression. After PR, it was Buffy the Vampire Slayer the series, when it premiered in 1997, I was a teenager. Actually, there are quite a bit of connections and references from Power Rangers to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There are many similarities to the first season of Buffy, like teenagers fighting monsters, strong females, witches, a stuffy male mentor and somewhat campiness. But of course, Buffy was much more better crafted, all original and got more sexual and adult as it went on. So it was a natural progression as I grew up.

Xander Bly
The most obvious reference, which hasn't made clear if it was a reference but many fans did believe so, that Xander Bly of Mystic Force was a reference to Xander Harris of Buffy.


Sophia Crawford
Stuntwoman Ms. Crawford went from playing the Pink Ranger in the first three seasons to being the stunt double for Sarah Michelle Gellar in the first two seasons of Buffy. This was reference to in the 2nd part of "What's My Line?" when Buffy called fellow slayer Kendra a 'Pink Ranger.'

Alison Macinnis and James Marsters
Alison who played Dana in Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue in 2000 dated James Marsters (Spike for 5 seasons of Buffy and 1 season of Angel) for a brief while. This is them when they were at an Cosmopolitan event when Sarah Michelle was on the cover.

Walter Emmanuel Jones
How else could I forget that Zack himself guest starred as a college student in the episode "Fear Itself" of Season 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He is only seen in one scene and doesn't interact with the main cast.

Michelle Trachtenberg
Equally Michelle Trachtenberg guest starred on Walter Jones' after-MMPR show "Space Cases." She guest starred in the episode "All You Can Eaty" with her "The Adventures of Pete & Pete" co-star Danny Tambereli. Michelle went on to play Dawn on Buffy.

Ron Rogge
Ron Rogge, who played Captain Mitchell in Lightspeed Rescue played a cop arresting Buffy and Faith in Season 3 episode "Bad Girls". Roggé has several lines and appears in two scenes of the episode.

Karim Prince
Karim Prince appeared in Season 5 episode "Spiral," as one of the Knights of Byzantium, who wanted to destroy the Key (Dawn) before the main villain Glory could use it. You may not recognize Karim Prince but he played Cestro the Blue Aquitar Ranger. He also appeared on Malcolm in the Middle as Francis' military cadet friend.
