Chouseishin Series

Chouseishin Gransazer (Ultra Star God GranSazer) - 10/04/03 – 09/25/04
The Gransazers were created by an ancient race of humans, before an alien alliance wiped them out millions of years ago. The Gransazers are divided into 4 tribes: flame, wind, earth, and water. Each tribe were formed differently and some were complete strangers. At first, one alien under a guise had the Wind Tribe fight against the other tribes. Once that was figured out, they defeated the alien and fought alongside, even though they had their own issues. The Water Tribe was later discovered around the same time as the evil Impactors came around, making thing worse. Together with the Ultra Star Gods, the Gransazers combat alien threats that threaten to annihilate Earth and mankind. 51 episodes.

Genseishin Justirisers (10/02/04 – 09/24/05)
When a monster from the sky is called, three chosen individuals are present. Shouta Date is awoken first, as Riser Glen and he fights back with Seishinjuu Enoh. He is told by a mysterious female voice that he must potect humanity. He takes this seriously. He later finds out his classmate Yuka Sanada is Riser Kageri but she just wants to be a normal girl. Meanwhile, Shinya Hiraga/Riser Gant is hiding in the shadows, observing them. He does not believe in just fighting to protect humanity, and questions why they were given the power, and what for. It takes much for anyone to become friends with him, and earning his trust is hard. 51 episodes.

Chousei Kantai Sazer-X (Super Star Fleet Sazer-X) - 10/24/05 – 06/24/06
In the year 2500, the earth has been taken over and covered in darkness by a race known as the Neo-Descal. The remaining members of the human resistance send their trump card weapons, the three Meteor God warships to the past to try and change the future by stopping Neo-Descal in 2005, when their attacks began. Along with the Meteor God warships comes Ad, captain of the Adle-Eagle squad and his right hand man, Gordo, Kane, captain of the Beet-Vizor squad, and the twin Sazers Ein and Zwein, and Remy, who pilots Great Lio. Ad and Kane are joined by Takuto Andou, whose grandfather met Captain Shark, leader of the resistance, as a young man and was left with a Knuckle Cross to allow his grandson in 2005 to become the third member of the team known as Sazer X. 38 episodes. The series last 38 episodes and was the last of the Chouseishin franchise after its cancellation. I didn't like it a lot since it didn't have a heronie, but there was a female warrior but she was a minor character.

Select Gransazer Images from Scans

How the sites Ranger Central, Super Sentai Time Capsule, Rider Legacy and Toku Central work out is Mike gets the books and scan them. I write the material, he sets up the section. He scanned Gransazer and told me to make the section for Toku Central. He says the only book of the Seishin series that was made was Gransazer, not Justirizer, nor Sazer-X. I thought I'd post up just a few pictures I found interesting. Please do not leave comments or questions or suggestions about other sections of my sites, they will be when they will be done and I don't know when. Just keep comments about Gransazer please.

Non-Toei Tokusatsu from Japan, Thailand, and France

Aikoku Sentai Dai-Nippon (1982)
Aikoku Sentai Dai-Nippon (Patriot Squadron Great Japan) was produced by Daicon Films (now Gainax). It was a Sentai Pastiche or homage. Check out more about it at this Japanese site.

Jushi Sentai France Five (2000)
At firt glance I thought this was a fanfiction film, but actually they are four episodes in France. It was produced by Buki X-1 Productions in 2000s. It is an homage to Toei's ever-popular Super Sentai Series, which was extremely popular in France in the 1980s. This series is said to be a nod to another Sentai pastiche, Aikoku Sentai Dai-Nippon. The series has become kind of popular in Japan, with singer Akira Kushida singing an original theme for Episode 4. Prior to that point, the themes were French remixes of older Sentai theme songs (Choujin Sentai Jetman and Choudenshi Bioman) with an original French theme.

Chouseishin Series (2003-2006)
2003 was a heck of a year for Tokusatsu, there was Abaranger, Kamen Rider Faiz, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and Gransezar. The Super Star God Series were produced by Toho Company, Ltd., in association with Konami. They had three series: Gransezar, Justirizer and Sazer-X. Gransezar had lots of warriors, females in white and red, blue, orange & fuschia, males in blue, indigo, purple, red, yellow and yellow-orange; Justirizer had a girl in blue, males in red and black; Sazer-X only had males (Orange, White and Blue).

Squadron Sport Ranger ขบวนการ สปอร์ตเรนเจอร์ (2006)
It had sixteen episodes in Thailand in 2006 and was the first original tokusatsu from Thailand in a while, but it was first to look the most like Super Sentai. Many fans have asked me to mention this series. Starhunter is an alien tribe that steals all life energy on other planets, gathering the energy through medals. One medal was split into five and when Starhunter came to Earth, the Sport Ranger were formed to fight them. Red, Yellow, Green were male and Pink and Blue were female.

Wecker Signa (2007)
The third installment of the Wecker series, it is the only one where the girls are actually suited up with helmets. Their colors were pink, orange, purple and black. They made toys of both their regular forms and armored forms. This aired in Japan.

Tomica Hero: Rescue Force and Tomica Hero: Rescue Fire (2008-2010)
Broadcast on Japan's TV Aichi, the Tomica Hero series based on Takara Tomy's Tomica toy car line. Rescue Force started out April 2008 and was followed by the sequel Rescue Fire. Rescue Force is deployed to protect human lives from various disasters too extreme for normal rescue workers, started with blue, silver, black, gold were men and red and white were female. Both series had 51 episodes and a movie. In Fire, orange, silver, cyan and black were male and green is female. There was Rescue Aqua planned, I don't know if it went into production but now the project is on hold.

Series Profile: Chouseishin Gransazer

In 2003, this new tokusatsu show started outside of Toei company (Super Sentai and Kamen Rider) and Ultraman, it was called Chouseishin Gransazer. It was made by Toho Company Ltd. (Godzilla), and Konami (the video game company). It was unique because it had a lot of heroes, 12 in total. What was smart was they made 4 teams, they called them 'tribes' and 3 in each one. They started out with two teams and later went on episodes later for the third and the last team by almost to the end of the series. The theme was Astrology, the 12 used in horoscopes.

I have seen the first half of the series and I liked it. It is the first in the "Seishin (Star God)," the second (Justirizer) only had three heroes (I also saw that one and it was pretty good) and the last one (Sazer-X) were three males (no girl)--I haven't seen it, but I heard it wasn't as great. The Seishin series was more like Super Sentai than Kamen Rider with their giant monsters and giant machines that changed and combined. I be a fan of the Tokusatsu heronies, I love that there are 4 heronies in Gransazer and they were all good characters.

My favorite was Sazer-Visuel (above), the girl from the Earth Tribe. She usually hanged out with the Flame Tribe, which was the main protagonists. I like how it had Tokusatsu mainstay characters like the shy one, the unsure one, the loner, the energetic one, etc. I loved the episode where surgeon Sazer-Remls (the leader of the wind tribe) had to operate on someone and Sazer-Tarious (the main protagonist) called his integrity into question as he was teamed up with an evil alien and didn't want to admit it.

Design-wise, I didn't like that green was not used, they could have had more diversity in the colors with the Water Tribe. Because Sazer-Gorbion and Sazer-Gans look like the same shade of blue, and officially close to the color of Sazer-Remls. I like the different shades of colors overall, where the Flame Tribe is red, Wind Tribe is purple-ish colors, Earth Tribe is orange and yellow, while Water Tribe was blue. Also, it was strange that the animals of the actual horoscope was not used sometimes and some other animal was used, like how Sazer-Gorbion was Scorpio but his theme was shark. And Sazer-Gans was Cancer (crab) but manta-ray-themed.

Violet Power Ranger

Previously Posted on 5/24/07, Updated 10/12/13

The picture above is from the latest Super Sentai series 'Gekiranger' in Japan, next year it will become the newest incarnation of the Power Rangers--Power Rangers Jungle Fury. I have been waiting for a Purple Ranger for years. For some time I thought the purple ranger would be female but I guess I was gender bias. This new 'ranger' is GekiViolet, yes that's right Violet. I agree that 'Violet' sounds female but thats just our society, gender assignment. It is silly to think colors have genders. In some cultures, pink and blue don't belong to any particular gender while in others pink is for men. I highly doubt that Disney will call this ranger Violet but we'll see. [Turns out he is called the Wolf Ranger, but fans--including me call him the Violet Wolf Ranger.] I am so excited, I think it is so bad ass that a male superhero is violet.

Background on series: Gekiranger means 'Fierce Ranger' and started with three feline-inspired warriors that practice martial art techniques based on animals. GekiViolet obviously has a wolf theme.

In Tokusatsu, most purple warriors have been men:

2012 - Kyoryu Violet from Kyoryuger
Mid-way through the series we are introduced to the male KyoryuViolet, he becomes injured and his granddaughter eventually takes his place, gaining a skirt and becomes a recurring 7th member of the Kyoryuger. She doesn't appear in every episode after her introduction but does with more frequency than most other 'Extra' females like DekaSwan, MagiMother, Hime Shinken Red, etc.

2008 - "Kamen Rider Kiva" Dogga Form.
The main character dons this armor, which is the fourth and the bulkiest. It is based on the Frankenstein monster.

2007 - "Kamen Rider Den-O" Gun Form
The main hero would be possessed by one of the 'Taro' Imagin Ryutaros and Ryutaros mostly overpowered the other Taro and the hero. Den-O followed the same color scheme as Gekiranger with Red, Blue, Yellow, Violet and White.

2006 - Kamen Rider Sawsword of "Kamen Rider Kabuto"
Purple seems to be a common color for Kamen Rider these days, I was not aware of this one, actually I was but completely forgot. He was arrogant and stubborn and didn't believe laws effected him.

2005 - Wolzard from "Magiranger" [Koragg from "Power Rangers Mystic Force"]
He was one of the main antagonists that turned out to be the heroes' father. In Mystic Force, he was only the father of the red ranger and in both version was the father of the white warrior. And in both, they become a good red version of the warrior.

2002 - Kamen Rider Ouja from "Kamen Rider Ryuki" [Kamen Rider Strike from 'Kamen Rider Dragon Knight']
He was a crazed serial killer.

2003-2004 - Sazer Dali of the Gransezars
He was part of the Wind Tribe and was controlled by bad guys for a while. He was the punk kid. Gransezar was part of three series that Konami did from 2003 to 2005.

2000 - Kamen Rider Kuuga
Kuuga had a purple form, not aware of the name. I think ti is the Titan Form, not sure.

1993 - Tokusou Robo Jansperson
I don't think it had a gender, as he was a robot.

1996 - B-Fighter Tentou of B-Fighter Kabuto [Platinum Purple Beetleborg from Beetleborgs Metallix]
The only purple female in Tokusatsu I can think of is B-Fighter Tentou of "B-Fighter Kabuto."

1994 - Purple Swat of Blue Swat
Actually, there was another purple female, earlier than all of these but technically it was just her top armor, she wore some shiny pants.
